A front currently bringing heavy rain to the west of the South Island is expected to become slow-moving and weaken over Buller during Thursday and Friday. There is low confidence that rainfall warnings will be extended into Friday for Buller and northwest Nelson.

On Friday a moist northeast flow should spread over northern and central New Zealand bringing rain to many areas. On Saturday a deep low is expected to move southwards and lie east of Northland around midnight Saturday then move east of Gisborne on Sunday. Very strong east to southeasterlies are likely over much of the North Island on Saturday, turning south to southwest on Sunday. There is low confidence that the southeasterlies over Northland, Coromandel Peninsula,Bay of Plenty and Gisborne will need a warning on Saturday. On Sunday the southwesterlies in Northland, Auckland and northern Coromandel Peninsula may be strong enough to warrant a warning, although confidence is low.

Heavy rain is also likely associated with the low, and there is moderate confidence that a rainfall warning will be needed in Northland, northern Auckland, the Coromandel Peninsula and Bay of Plenty on Friday and Saturday. For Gisborne and northern Hawkes Bay, confidence is high that a rainfall warning will be issued for Saturday and Sunday. During Sunday there is also moderate confidence that a rainfall warning will be needed for the rest of Hawkes Bay and the Tararua District. Also on Sunday there is low confidence that a rainfall warning will be needed for the rest of Wairarapa, the Tararua Range and northern Kaikoura Coast.
