Forecast - Saturday 15.06.2013
« on: June 15, 2013, 07:38:02 AM »
All eyes continue to be on the incoming low which should be more noticeable over the South Island today and most of the country tomorrow.

Thickening cloud and rain is pushing across the West Coast this morning and other parts of the Mainland should see some rain this afternoon or tonight.

Much of the North Island is looking bright and dry with the odd shower possible over the upperhalf but these appear mainly light and isolated.

Temperatures are looking mildly pleasant over most areas of the North Island but a tad chilly along the east of the South Island from Kaikoura all the way to the south coast near Bluff, including Invercargill.

Mt Hutt is likely to open today for the season and Coronet peak is now into its eight day of business for 2013.
Winds are likely to build and cloud lower throughout today for the skifields with some rain and snow later today or tonight.

Weather for the all important second test between the All Blacks and France tonight in Christchurch has a reasonable chance of some rain developing with mainly patchy and light falls if it is to happen.
Winds will be coming in from the northeast and a temperature of 8 or 9 degrees is possible at kick off time.

Saturday Night

NZLWF

A large complex low in the Tasman Sea should move slowly towards the South Island during the weekend. A strong moist northeast flow is expected to spread onto New Zealand today and persist through most of Sunday. Rain is forecast for all of New Zealand. Heavy rain warnings have now been issued for Nelson, northern parts of Marlborough, Westland south of Hokitika, Canterbury south of the Rakaia, eastern parts of Otago, and for Bay of Plenty.

This watch for heavy rain now covers Northland, Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula, southern Marlborough, and the remainder of Canterbury north of the Rakaia.

During Sunday, an active front should cross northern North Island areas with a period of intense rain. Although not prolonged, this rain in Northland, Auckland and Coromandel Peninsula may come close to short period warning thresholds.

For southern parts of Marlborough, and for Canterbury north of the Rakaia, widespread rain is expected on Sunday, but at this stage forecast rainfalls do not justify a warning and a watch will be maintained.
