WednesdayThunderstorms are expected to spread south over Northland, Auckland and northern Coromandel Peninsula this afternoon, reaching Auckland/northern Coromandel Peninsula about 4pm. Some of these thunderstorms may be SEVERE with wind gusts exceeding 110km/h and hail larger than 20mm in diameter. There is also a slight chance that tornadoes could occur. Wind gusts of this strength can cause some structural damage, including trees and power lines, and may make driving hazardous. Large hail can cause significant damage to crops, orchards, vines, glasshouses and vehicles, as well as make driving conditions hazardous. If any tornadoes occur, they will only affect very localised areas.
