The week ahead
« Reply #1 on: December 02, 2012, 10:21:24 PM »
This coming week very generally speaking will be dominated by a westely airflow. This means dry most of the time in the east and wet out west.

A low pressures system crosses the lower South Island on Wednesday but for most conditions will be rather westerly. On Thursday another low will cross over the country this time more centrally.

So to get a little more detailed. Monday has mostly dry conditions out east, some cloud in the west with the odd shower clearing in the morning for both islands. Tuesday sees increasing cloud in the west with the odd shower later for most, dry again in the east with high cloud.

Rain or showers for most in the west of both islands on Wednesday, dry out east with strong west to northwest winds from Canterbury northwards. Thursday is similar however there may be a few dry areas about in the west for the morning, and strong northwesterly winds become confined to the North Island.

Finally eastern districts in the South Island will get a taste of the wet stuff on Friday as the flow changes southwest, conditions clear up out west. For the North Island’s west coast conditions are still likely to be showery, showers develop later in the day in the east.

Forecast Video: NZ's first week of summer!
« Reply #2 on: December 03, 2012, 11:21:39 PM »
A number of lows and rain bands will this week bring plenty of rain to the north and west of New Zealand - however not everyone in the east will be seeing much rain. Week two of summer looks drier but today Philip Duncan walks you through the rain bands coming in this week.

A wet week ahead
« Reply #3 on: December 03, 2012, 11:36:35 PM »
A shot of moisture and unstable air will bring rain chances back to New Zealand as early tomorrow.

Tomorrow afternoon, showers are expected to be moving onshore about the upper and western North Island. Northwesterlies should help to keep temperatures up.

Gusty, warm winds are expected for the lower North Island and upper South Island.

For the rest of the South Island, while a dry day is expected for much of the Mainland, the deep south could see some precipitation ahead of a new disturbance.

As the flow of moisture continues, more rain is expected on Wednesday for the western and upper North Island. Winds will be picking up as well. The eastern North Island is also expected to see some rain on Wednesday. There is a lesser chance for rain for Central New Zealand. But southerlies are expected to bring more rain to the deep south.

On Thursday, a low starts to move in off the Tasman Sea. This is expected to bring a new shot of precipitation to the country, especially during the afternoon and evening. A few thunderstorms will be possible about the northern and eastern North Island.

On Friday, most of the country will start to dry out, but it will be a bit windy as New Zealand will be stuck in between a big Aussie high to our west and a deep low to our south-east The eastern South Island could end up seeing some precipitation though.

It looks like the upcoming weekend should be dry for just about everyone as that big Aussie high becomes a Kiwi high.

The joy of northwesterlies Tuesday
« Reply #4 on: December 03, 2012, 11:38:06 PM »
Oh joy at the incoming northwesterly airflow that will increase over New Zealand tomorrow, or maybe no joy depending on your situation.

Reader Michael from Auckland will atleast not have to erect a pine needle defence force field from his gutterings just yet however, there is some time before strong winds on Thursday and Friday to get supplies in order.

Increasing cloud and showers later in the west of New Zealand, warm and sunny out east with some high cloud.

Well that is the simple explanation of the weather tomorrow. The bulk of the rain for Tuesday will be on the West Coast of the South Island later in the day. Elsewhere in the west it will come in the form of showers from afternoon or evening.

Out in the east of both islands tomorrow expect mostly sunny weather and increasing high cloud, Christchurch will see northeast breezes till late afternoon once again then northwesterlies will finally break through. So there may just be enough time left in the day to get comfortable temperatures of 23 to 25 degrees.

Wellington and Marlborough are likely to have gusty northwesterlies develop in the afternoon becoming strong at times from evening, gale force northwesterlies are likely in Cook Strait. A few showers will jump across from the west into Marlborough and Wellington for a time in the evening also.

Rain started moving onto the west of the North Island this afternoon and as of now has been moving onto the West Coast of the South Island. Auckland has stayed dry for most of the day however rain has been scooting past down the western coastline, there has been the occasional spit move in during the last hour about the city.

Weather has been dry mostly for the remainder of the country with high cloud increasing in all regions this afternoon.

Temperatures have been warmest about northern Hawkes Bay and Gisborne in the North Island and about some parts of Canterbury, mainly North Canterbury. Christchurch got to 24 degrees this morning however cooled down a little after midday due to a northeasterly breeze yet again.

Government forecaster Metservice has heavy rain warnings out for the West Coast of the South Island from this evening through till tomorrow morning, 80 to 120mm of rain is likely with 150 to 180mm possible near the Glaciers.

Spiller over rain into the headwaters of the Otago and Canterbury rivers is likely too, 100m about the divide between this evening and tomorrow morning.

In the North Island the Tararua Ranges through to Taranaki is likely to receive 80 to 120mm of rain from tomorrow morning through till evening, and in the same time frame Tongariro National Park plus the Kaimanawa Mountains is expected to get 50 to 80mm of rain.

Eastern Bay Of Plenty is also in the firing line with 80 to 120mm of rain expected from midday Wednesday through till Thursday afternoon. There is a chance rain may continue through till evening if the front is slow in clearing away to the northeast.

One more surge of rough weather, then the calm
« Reply #6 on: December 05, 2012, 10:26:04 PM »
Yet another surge of 'late spring' weather is about to push across most of New Zealand - but it may be the last for a couple of weeks according to forecasters at WeatherWatch.co.nz.

The weather news authority says a large low in the Southern Ocean will push up against high pressure north of the country over the next three days - that means heavy rain in the west and more hot winds in the east.

Head weather analyst Philip Duncan says the heat will push in today along with rain in the west and north, then cooler conditions spread to most places as we go into the weekend. "It will be another scorcher in the east today, we're predicting Christchurch will hit the late 20s with inland parts of Canterbury potentially hitting the low 30s again".

Mr Duncan says the hot northerly or north westerly will also move into Marlborough, Wairarapa, Hawkes Bay and Gisborne with highs in the late 20s or even low 30s - but as you head north temperature may appear to drop. "Air temperatures will drop as you head north under cloudier weather however humidity levels will be much higher in the north so it will feel hot and sticky, especially if the sun comes out".

By the end of the day the risk for thunderstorms may lift in the South Island's west and south as colder air approaches from the Southern Ocean. Those thunderstorms could continue into Thursday morning.

Over Thursday and Friday a strengthening westerly then south westerly flow will cross New Zealand bringing showers, possibly heavy ones before easing over the weekend with cool nights and warm days.

"As I said back in November the spring weather pattern would continue into the start of December - but there's a big chunk of dry, settled, weather coming in from Australia starting this weekend and potentially lasting up until the days before Christmas".

As for Christmas day? WeatherWatch.co.nz will have the first prediction out next week!

Forecast Video: Heavy rain across parts of NZ

We have some more heat, rain and strong winds the forecast - but then some summer highs start to roll in from the west - possibly for the next week or two.

Severe weather threat update
« Reply #8 on: December 05, 2012, 10:50:11 PM »
A threat for severe weather continues across parts of New Zealand today.

For eastern Otago, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued by Government forecaster MetService. This means that conditions are right for the development of thunderstorms with strong winds, heavy rain and hail in and close to the watch area. WeatherWatch.co.nz forecasters agree that the potential for severe weather is there and this will need to be monitored as we go through the rest of the afternoon and into this evening. This watch is in effect until 6:30pm.

The government forecaster has also issued Heavy Rain Warnings;

Tararua Range and Mt Taranaki- In effect through this evening. Heaviest falls are expected this afternoon with rates of 15 to 20mm/hr with rainfall totals between 80mm to 120mm by 9pm this evening.

Tongariro National Park and the Kaimanawa Mountians- In effect through tonight. Heaviest falls are expected to be from late afternoon with rates approaching 10-15mm/hr. Additional heavy rain is possible overnight. Rainfall totals could be as high as 80mm by midnight.

Ranges of eastern Bay of Plenty- In effect through Thursday. 150-200mm are possible by 9pm tomorrow night. Peak rates of 15 to 20mm/hr are expected tomorrow morning and tomorrow afternoon.

Additionally, there is a threat for heavy rain about Waitomo, Waikato and Taupo through Thursday morning. MetService and WeatherWatch.co.nz forecasters agree that whilst the threat indeed exists, the potential is not very high for widespread heavy rain that would approach MetService’s warning criteria.

WeatherWatch.co.nz forecasters also believe a heavy rain threat exists for Wellington, the Kapiti Coast and Wairarapa. Again, there is just a small threat for rainfall approaching the criteria MetService has set forth for issuing a warning. However, brief periods of locally heavy rain are expected.

A price to pay this coming Friday for the current warmth
« Reply #9 on: December 05, 2012, 10:51:41 PM »
The warm and in some places humid weather that we are having today and will have for at least part of tomorrow can often come with a price tag in New Zealand, and this time the price is a cool southwesterly airflow developing from Friday.

Some will be happy to pay the price though to get rid of the muggy conditions up north and the very hot temperatures out east. Once the price hits there will still be a few repayments to be made till the weather finally settles out over the weekend thanks to a rewarding anticyclone coming in from the west.

So, the run down.

A depression will deepen west of the South Island tomorrow then cross over during the night to the eastern side, expect strong to gale northwesterly winds about Marlborough, Cook Strait and the east coast of the North Island as this process takes place. Strong southerly winds will develop about Southland and Otago overnight and heavy rain about eastern Bay Of Plenty clears overnight too. Expect muggy conditions to ease for the North Island in the later part of the day.

This depression will sit out east of the country for most of Friday pushing cool southerlies onto the South Island that will deliver some welcome rain for the east coast, Marlborough may only get a few showers however. The North Island has more westerly influenced weather with cloudy areas and showers out west, dry in the east. The showers in the west may be heavy and thundery between Taranaki and Kaptiti in the afternoon.

Saturday sees brisk southwesterlies move onto the North Island bringing some cloud and the odd shower out west, although sun will make an appearance too. The east may remain mostly dry although the risk of a shower is present. The South Island will be becoming settled with a southerly airflow dying during the day.

Sunday will have sunny settled weather for most with the anticyclone mentioned above having more influence by now. There is the chance that if there is enough moisture and temperatures get resonable in the afternoon, a shower or two is possible about inland parts of the North Island.

Rain, glorious rain - now prepare for dry
« Reply #10 on: December 06, 2012, 11:42:06 PM »
Rain and showers, sometimes heavy, continue to fall across many parts of New Zealand tonight bringing huge relief to farmers and gardeners across the nation after a very dry end to spring.

WeatherWatch.co.nz has for weeks been receiving emails from concerned farmers nationwide as rain numbers tumble and many regions dry out - before summer had even started.

However the rain at the moment is doing a great job at reversing this trend across a number of areas, especially the north and east of NZ which has seen less rain than this time last year.

On Friday a southerly will turn the rain to showers but while that process is happening the wet weather will push into Otago and Canterbury, two other very dry regions.

However as WeatherWatch.co.nz has been warning all week, those who rely on rain water may need to take note of the incoming dry weather.

A number of reliable models are picking a series of high pressure bubbles to cross central New Zealand - bringing settled, dry, sunny weather to the middle of the country and dry but cloudy at times weather for the upper north and lower south.

One model yesterday was picking a potential sub-tropical low at the end of next week, however the high looks powerful enough to stop it from heading south towards us.

The dry weather may last up to two weeks for some areas - but the luck of the dry may run out just in time for Christmas. We will confirm a Christmas Day forecast next week.

In the meantime we have a south west change spreading across New Zealand on Friday and Saturday which will kill off the humidity currently impacting northern NZ.

By Sunday we expect mostly settled and dry weather across New Zealand with warm days and cooler nights returning.
