Friday’s national forecast

A mix of sunny areas and some cloud over the North Island today after any morning showers clear in the west and about central areas, winds will be light from the west or northwest. About Wairarapa expect a few showers with southwesterly winds clearing in the afternoon, a few showers clear in Wellington by midday with sunny breaks then increasing. Later at night a few showers move onto the west coast north of Taranaki. Some morning fog about Waikato is possible and fog may form again at night there and in the Central North Island.
A mix of sunny areas and some cloud over the South Island, however expect fog in many places this morning but slowly breaking to some sun during the morning. Fog is likely to develop again at night in many areas. The odd drizzle patch may pester Fiordland mainly in the morning and any morning showers near the coasts in Buller and about Kaikoura clear with sunny spells increasing.
High’s today around 16 in Auckland, up to 17 in Northland. Mid teen high’s elsewhere and perhaps a degree or two cooler about Wellington, the Wairarapa and Central North Island. High’s of 12 to 13 in most South Island regions, about Nelson and Marlborough however 14 to 15 can be expected. If fog hangs around in some South Island areas for longer during the day this will naturally keep temperatures rather cool.

Settled but cloudy in some regions

It’s quite settled over New Zealand today however there is also a lot of cloud about, partly due to moisture that is hanging around having been left from a low now out to our east. As a result of this moisture it’s quite foggy particularly in Canterbury, in Christchurch the fog has managed to lift a little so far so now we’ll call it a cloudy sky. Hopefully a few sunny breaks peel through this afternoon, by evening the fog will more then likely lower back down so if you flying out from the airport tomorrow here or flying in keep an eye on conditions.
It’s not all cloudy everywhere though, parts of Otago, the West Coast of the South Island, Hawkes Bay, Gisborne and Northland have mostly sunny skies right now. The temperature in Northland is hitting 18 degrees currently making it the warmest in the country today. Southland even being as far south as it is, is not doing badly right now. Invercargill is on 14 degrees. The coldest temperatures last night went to parts of Central Otago which were around –1.
Winds are generally light tending southwesterly in the South Island, west to southwesterly winds in the North Island are a little breezier but still not too bad.

Thunderstorms moving in to upper North Island
«
Reply #16 on:

Weather Alert
An active area of thunderstorms and torrential rain is moving in towards the upper North Island from the Tasman Sea this evening says WeatherWatch.co.nz.
The band of heavy rain may break up in some areas, as they tend to do when they move off the sea and on to land, but heavy downpours with thunder are expected late this evening and overnight.
Head weather analyst Philip Duncan says areas most exposed are Waikato and Waitomo with Auckland and southern parts of Northland also expected to receive heavy downpours and a few thunderstorms. "Looking at the satellite maps and live lightning tracker it looks as though the line of heavy rain, showers and thunderstorms will reach the west coast shortly before midnight then spread elsewhere in the early hours of Saturday".
Mr Duncan says Coromandel Peninsula, Great Barrier Island and Bay of Plenty may have a few rumbles and heavy showers during Saturday morning.
The thunderstorms aren't widespread, so not everyone will get thunder, but the lightning tracker is detecting several areas of activity out to the west.
The free and live lightning tracker has detected a few hundred strikes in the past 60 minutes.
Motorists are advised to be aware of possible surface water/flooding and limited visibility in downpours and isolated hail.
