Not such a cold morning for us up the hill in Waitakere, the low looks like it will be 4.1°C - but down in the valley there's a very decent frost again with the car's temperature display indicating a 4°C drop down to zero again.
Conditions are very still and mainly clear - just a bit of cloud to the horizons. A good day coming.

Blue sky overhead this morning in Howick though there is a bank of cloud out to the east. Overnight low was 0.8°C, the frost is just a little bit lighter than previous mornings.

Beautiful sunny day for Waitakere, high was 14.1°C and dropping quite quickly now with clear skies, down to 6.0°C already but the current rate of fall is slowing down a bit.
I see MetService are forecasting 1°C overnight tonight and -1°C for tomorrow night!

Tuesday’s national forecast

Mostly sunny weather can be expected over the North Island with light winds in all areas tending northerly or northwesterly about Wellington and the Kapiti Coast, a chance of morning fog in sheltered inland areas but quickly clearing in the morning. Some cloud along the east coast north of Hawkes Bay with the chance of one or two remaining light showers about Gisborne in the morning. Also about the eastern coastline of Northland and about the Coromandel there may be some cloud with the low risk of a few showers in the morning there. Frosty to start in many areas, high’s climbing up the the mid teens in Northland. Lower double figure high’s elsewhere.
The South Island will receive sunny weather for most places with light winds tending northeasterly along the east coast. A few cloudy areas along the West Coast and some rain in Fiordland however. Sunny periods and some cloud about Southland with northwesterly breezes, some high cloud about Otago and maybe South Canterbury as well. In the evening a few light showers may move into Southland and Otago. Low double figure high’s in most areas perhaps breaking into the teens in Nelson, central Otago a little cooler with high single figure temperatures.

How is NZ today?

Well things are turning out mostly as expected today. A few morning showers cleared Gisborne and currently just off Great Barrier Island there are a few showers sneaking past, perhaps one or two might make landfall but it seems unlikely now as the greater chance was in the morning. Sunny skies elsewhere across the North Island with light winds, it’s really been a hum dinger up there lately apart from the unfortunate east coast but their turn has started to arrive today and will get nicer especially from Thursday as the flow turns more northwesterly. The mercury got down to 1 or 2 degrees in Auckland overnight, some sheltered spots got down to 0.
The South Island has high cloud across the lower half of the Island, mostly sunny in eastern districts however areas of cloud lower down on the West Coast. A few showers or periods of rain will be getting into Fiordland now as well. Temperatures were not as cold overnight as they have been in Central Otago due to the high cloud cover with lows of 0 to –2 for most although a little further north into Twizel –4 was experienced due to thick high cloud not having reached that far north by dawn.
A few light showers may move into Southland and southern areas of Otago this evening then tomorrow looks like a repeat of today for the South Island, the North Island tomorrow will be precipitation free although fog chances rise for the Central North Island, Waikato and Auckland at night so keep an eye on the forecasts.

Amazing Photo: Southern Lights seen from Canterbury this morning

WeatherWatch.co.nz reader Andrew Dallow says he captured this remarkable photo this morning from Darfield, Canterbury as the Southern Lights (Aurora Australis).
"This morning between 1 - 1:30 am an aurora became viable from Darfield. Visually it was vary faint with only a glow to the south and some times I could see faint band of light. I also took 30 second exposures of the aurora which showed up the detail" Andrew Dallow told us.
