Eased right off for the moment, though it is till raining at around 3 mm/hr, wind is negligible and there's a bit of a brighter look in the sky (don't talk too soon, Derek).
Out of this session, the highest rain rate looks like being 52.6 mm/hr, with a highest hourly rain total of 12 mm, and current total for the day is 23.6 mm (so far).
Drainage ditch that runs between us and the neighbours place was a complete torrent - may have some pictures to upload if they have come out OK.

A day of contrasts, in Waitakere right now we are basking in full bright sunshine with clear blue sky dominating the scene and extending from the north and west of us. Temperature climbing as a result, up to 11.4°C now.

Tuesday’s national forecast

Any rain about Northland clears in the morning to mostly sunny weather however there may be a few isolated showers into the afternoon, winds tend northwesterly with high’s upwards of 17 degrees. Rain eases clearing towards evening further south from Auckland through to the Waikato and Western Bay of Plenty, gusty northeasterlies tend northwest later there. Cloudy about most other areas of the North Island with breezy east to northeasterly winds, showers spread southwards to reach Wellington in the evening. High’s around the lower North Island in the low double figures.
Mostly sunny weather on the West Coast once again with breezy east to southeasterly winds, some high cloud north of the Glaciers. Mostly sunny about Southland and Central Otago with northeasterly breezes. Mostly cloudy skies can be expected along the East Coast and top of the South Island with east to northeast breezes, drizzle patches or light rain from evening especially north of Banks Peninsula. High’s of around 13 can be expected in Greymouth, cooler in the east and north with 8 to 10 degrees looking likely.

Traffic jam over North Island skies today
«

A large low and a front with sub-tropical connections, sounds like a recipe for heavy rain - and it is. Today the Tasman Sea low will continue to pump out energy but it's the blocking nature of the weekend's high pressure system that could cause problems.
The departing high is very slow moving - a bit like a truck driving up a hill. Meanwhile the rain, in the car behind, wanting to move faster, but can't - and there's no room to overtake.
So the rain band is being held up and therefore North Island residents - and some in the north of the South Island - are in for a wet day - or a wet end to the day.
Nor'easters will blow across the island, turning more nor'west and easing in the north later today.
The South Island has a different set up - much drier and sunnier in the south with clouds building from the north and west.
The low isn't aggressive but its slow movement does increase the chances of heavy rain - and potentially minor flooding - around regions such as Bay of Plenty, Taranaki and King Country.
On Wednesday rain is expected to set in across eastern areas - we'll have more details later today and tomorrow.

Another "hard to start" day over Southern NZ
«

It's another "hard to start" day in the south with another widespread frost covering the region.
The frost reading in Invercargill is 9.2 , its just touching 8 degrees in Gore and 7 degrees in Wanaka.
This morning's frost in Invercargill is the hardest of the current run of frosts.
As for air temperatures (taken at 06:30am) , it was -5 in Invercargill , -2 in Gore , -6 in Queenstown and -2 in Wanaka - but skies basically clear.
The forecast again says frosts will be slow to thaw and drivers are urged to be wary of ice and black ice - although the risk for today would've mostly past now, with highest risk for black ice particularly around sunrise.
Plumbers across Southland have been busy attending to burst pipes caused by the ultra chilly frosts.

Just In: Torrential rain around Waihi Beach / Katikati area - flooding causing issues. Avoid driving if possible.
