Weather lacking "oomph" for this time of year
« on: May 08, 2012, 08:42:33 AM »
A low in the Tasman Sea will, over the next 24 hours, bring rain or showers to a number of regions, but as WeatherWatch.co.nz head weather analyst Philip Duncan explains the weather this Autumn is definitely lacking energy.

"March started off with tropical and sub-tropical lows, then April things went dry and sunny for many.  Now May is continuing with the same trend.  The weather at the moment is definitely lacking oomph".

Mr Duncan says intense highs have been the main reason, bringing in more settled weather to New Zealand and keeping big lows well away from the country.

WeatherWatch.co.nz said 10 days ago that May was looking fairly settled despite a predicted slight increase in lows around the country than last month.  WeatherWatch.co.nz also predicted that temperatures overall would be average to slightly above average, despite the brief cold snap last week.

"We see another cool sou'west change moving in around Wednesday and lasting until the weekend - then another high should be moving in, although it's a little unclear as to which parts of the country will be most settled".

Severe weather across the country has been very limited through April and May so far.  "We've had few thunderstorms, little snow and the wind and rain warnings that were issued two weekends ago came to very little.  For now Autumn is treating us well".

Autumn officially ends on May 31st. with winter kicking off the day after - although some believe true winter doesn't kick off until the shortest day of the year in the third week of June.

WeatherWatch.co.nz says winter may be similar to last year, which saw a chaotic mix of record breaking warmth and record breaking cold, including snow falling as far north as Auckland and Northland.
