An eruption by Indonesia's Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano, located in the southeastern part of Flores Island, spewed ash clouds more than 8km (5 miles) into the air, disrupting flights and raising emergency warnings to the highest level for residents and tourists.
Indonesia's Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation warned locals and visitors on Friday against activities within a radius of 7-8km (4.4-5 miles) in the southwest and northeast sectors of the eruption.
"The ash column was observed grey to black with thick intensity," Indonesia's volcanology agency said in a statement about the eruption that began at 10:56pm local time on Thursday night (14:56 GMT).
There were no immediate reports of damage to nearby villages, but the agency warned residents of the potential for volcanic mudflow due to heavy rainfall. The long eruption prompted the country's geological agency to raise the volcano's alert level to the highest of the four-tiered system.

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara province erupted on Tuesday (Jun 17), spewing a towering ash cloud 11km high, the country's volcanology agency said.

The agency also said it had raised the alert level of the volcano to the most dangerous, warning of potential lava flows if it rains heavily.

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, a 1,584m-high twin-peaked volcano on the tourist island of Flores, erupted at 5.35pm there, the volcanology agency said in a statement.

"The ash column was observed to be grey with thick intensity," it added.

Six Russian volcanoes erupted shortly after an 8.8 magnitude earthquake and aftershocks struck nearby, with a seventh possibly to follow.

Klyuchevskaya erupted first, on July 30. It had already shown signs of unrest before the earthquake, and experts deduced that the quake likely intensified the eruption but didn't trigger it. However, it's difficult to know the exact effect of the earthquake on the volcano. Eruptions of nearby volcanoes Shiveluch, Bezymianny, Karymsky, Avachinsky and Krasheninnikov soon followed and continue through today.

All of the volcanoes sit on the Ring of Fire, a geological feature notorious for volcanic and seismic activity.

The area around this parade of erupting volcanoes, called the Kamchatka Peninsula, is sparsely populated, so there doesn't seem to be an active threat to local communities. However, the eruptions could pose a risk to planes if they were to fly through ash plumes, Harold Tobin, a seismologist at the University of Washington, told Live Science in an email.

Despite the recent spate of eruptions, experts say this kind of volcanic activity is not out of the ordinary. "About 40 to 50 volcanoes are actively erupting around the world at any given time. Right now is no different," Tobin said. "Kamchatka is a very volcanically active region."

Were the eruptions caused by the earthquake?

There is no clear or singular way an earthquake can cause volcanic eruptions, but these two events can co-occur at subduction zones, areas where one tectonic plate dives beneath another.

Hawaii's Kilauea volcano is one of the most active in the world. This is its 31st eruption since December.

Kilauea put on a record-breaking light show with episode 35 of its current eruption.

After a couple of days of bubbling and overflows, lava fountains began spewing from the north vent in Halemaumau crater at about 8:05 p.m. Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

That was followed by fountains from the south vent, which began at about 8:50 p.m. and grew rapidly, with lava from both vents feeding large flows on the crater floor, USGS said.

At 10:11 p.m., USGS reported record-high fountains for this eruption at nearly 1,500 feet.



This marked the highest single fountain and highest pair of fountains seen during this eruption.

The plume of gas above the fountains rose to over 16,000 feet above ground level, and tephra was reported by Hawaii County Civil Defense falling on Highway 11 southwest of the vents.

Fine ash and Pele's Hair impacted a broad area of Kaʻu along the southern and southwestern parts of Mauna Loa.

As brilliant as Friday's show was, the episode was brief, ending abruptly at 3:32 a.m. Saturday after seven and a half hours.

Episode 36 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption on Kīlauea ended abruptly at 4:16 p.m. on Sunday, after just under 5 hours of continuous fountaining.

The north vent stopped erupting at approximately 3:38 p.m. The south vent dropped from 1,000 to 500 feet around 3:48 p.m. It held stead for a little while before slowly declining and eventually stopping erupting at approximately 4:16 p.m.

Lava fountains reached a maximum of 1,000 to 1,100 feet during this episode. It produced an estimated 10 to 11 million cubic yards of lava.

A cold lava flood occurred in the Senowo River, which originates at Mount Merapi, on Tuesday (April 3, 2026) at around 3:30 p.m. WIB. Bambang Hermanto, Head of the Magelang Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), stated that the cold lava flood occurred after heavy rain at the summit of Mount Merapi. "The Senowo River joined other rivers," Bambang said in a statement on Wednesday (March 4, 2026).

Currently, Bambang said, a joint team is also searching for four missing victims. The search will continue for the next seven days.

Additionally, a truck was reportedly swept away by the floodwaters. Bambang stated that the cold lava flood also injured six people. Two of them are currently undergoing treatment at the Muntilan Regional General Hospital (RSUD).
