For the first time in Cuba’s instrumental record, a verified freezing temperature has been observed.
On the morning of Feb 3, Indio Hatuey, in Matanzas Province, dropped to 0C (32F) — officially setting a new all-time national cold record for the country. The previous record was 0.6C (33.1F) at Bainoa in Feb 1996.
Cuba had never before reached the freezing threshold in its modern weather record which dates back to 1909.
The freeze was part of a broader cold outbreak that shattered cold records across the island.
Santi Spiritus fell to 6C (42.8F), a monthly record. Pinar del Rio hit 6.9C (44.4F), a monthly low. Jucarito and Santa Cruz del Sur both dropped to 6.8C (44.2F), setting all-time records. Camaguey reached 7.7C (45.9F), another monthly record, while Trinidad and Veguitas each logged 7.8C (46F), also monthly records.
The cold did not stop at Cuba’s borders.
In Guatemala, Flores/Tikal tanked to 9C (48.2F), tying its all-time low. In El Salvador, Finca Los Andes dropped to 3.5C (38.3F), another new monthly record. Add these to the records that fell yesterday across the likes of Belize and The Bahamas.
Truly historic cold has just torn through the tropics.
