Heavy Snow Hits Northeast Iceland

Access to Dettifoss waterfall has been closed this week due to heavy snow.

The waterfall, located in Vatnajökull National Park, Northeast Iceland, is Europe's second most powerful, behind only the Rhine Falls, boasting a flow rate of up to 500 cubic meters per second.

The road closures were announced on Sunday, with the park's management warning of "very demanding conditions" owing to the significant accumulations to have hit the area over the past few days.




Iceland has a cool, oceanic climate, with mild winters and cool summers. Snow is common in the winter months, but as summer approaches, the flakes becomes less frequent. Mid-June snow is considered relatively rare, particularly at these volumes.
