NORTHERN HEMISPHERE SNOW SEASON OFF TO A NEAR-RECORD START
Looking at all the available data, the 2022-2023 Northern Hemisphere snow season is off to an impressive start.
The Finish Meteorological Institute’s ‘Total Snow Mass for the NH’ chart –that I track on Electroverse– has yet to plot its first datapoint of the year, but we have Environment & Climate Change Canada (ECCC) and Rutgers data to use in the meantime.
ECCC has a ‘Snow Extent Tracker’ and a ‘Snow Water Equivalent’ (SWE) chart.
Both are showing above-average gains:
ECCC ‘Snow Extent Tracker’ for NH.
ECCC ‘Snow Water Equivalent (SWE) Tracker for NH.
This ‘healthy’ growth is supported by the Rutgers Global Snow Lab, which uses a useful 1967-2022 base to draw its departures.

HIGHEST NORTHERN HEMISPHERE SNOW EXTENT IN BOOKS DATING BACK TO 1967

The Northern Hemisphere’s 2022-2023 snow season is off to an impressive start.
The United States registered its snowiest November 16 ever last week–before the historic lake-effect dumpings, and the snow cover in Eurasia is truly extraordinary with practically every square inch of Russia currently blanketed.
Using the historical satellite environmental data record (EDR) (which extends back to 1966/7), researchers at Rutgers Global Snow Lab have developed a satellite climate data record (CDR) — from this dataset comes the ‘Weekly NH Snow Cover’ chart.

NORTHERN HEMISPHERE SNOW MASS 250 GIGATONS ABOVE 1982-2012 AVERAGE

Northern Hemisphere snow mass is enjoying a tremendous start to the season, aided in no small part by Russia.
Some 80% of transcontinental Russia’s 17.1 million km² land mass is currently under a blanket of snow:
This is driving total snow mass for the hemisphere (excluding the mountains) some 250 gigatons above the 1982-2012 average:
[FMI]
This is supported by NOAA/Rutgers, who see weekly NH snow cover extent approaching the ’57-year max’:

Early Season Snow Intensifies Across Asia
«

Cold temperatures and heavy snows have descended earlier than usual across much of Asia, disrupting daily life but also fueling excitement for the winter season ahead.
Tragically in Kyrgyzstan, heavy snowfall has triggered deadly avalanches in the mountainous district of Chatkal.
The Kyrgyzstan Emergency Situations Ministry confirmed the recovery of six bodies from a group of 14 that went missing while collecting medicinal plants on October 9.
Kyrgyzstan saw rare summer snows earlier this year, back on Aug 27-28, and also in early Sept.
Headed east, the Indian state of Sikkim has also experienced an early taste of winter.
Changu Valley saw its first snows of the season over the weekend. Significant snowfall was also noted in Thangu and the Gurudongmar Lake region, resulting in blocked roads, slips and widespread disruptions throughout the state, with the Border Roads Organisation mobilizing to clear key routes.
Looking north, thermometers in Russia have continued tanking.
Following the biting lows reported last week, Yarol'In has gone further, posting a historically early -35.3C (-31.5F) on October 21 — the Northern Hemisphere's lowest temperature of the season (outside of Greenland).
Continuing east, South Korea's Mount Seorak saw its first snowfall of the season overnight Saturday, with temperatures sinking to -2.6C (27.3F) by Sunday morning.
The Korea Meteorological Administration issued its first cold wave advisory of the season for the northern Gangwon region, with both the advisory and the snow arriving earlier than usual.

Northern Hemisphere Snow Mass Above 1982-2012 Average

After an apparently lackluster start (potentially related to data issues), the Northern Hemisphere snow mass is now building at rates above the 1982-2012 average.
Data from GlobSnow SWE v1.3, which is calculated using satellite microwave radiometer observations combined with ground-based snow depth measurements, reveals the total snow mass across the hemisphere, excluding mountainous regions.
[FMI]
The season’s latest data, marked by the circled red dot, shows total snow mass as of November 4 trending above the historical average. This is in no small part tied to the historically early accumulations building across the likes of Russia, Mongolia and China.
Just this week comes the news that even Western Russia is copping record-breaking November snowfall, across Murmansk and Moscow—to name just two regions.

Antarctic Sea Ice Nearing 1979-1990 Average

current Antarctic sea ice extent is both comfortably within two standard deviations of historical norms and rapidly approaching the 1979–1990 average.
This recovery underscores natural variability of Earth’s climate, which is governed by complex and dynamic forcings that go beyond simplistic, CO2-focused unthinking.
The seasonal ebb and flow of Antarctic ice, influenced by factors like ocean currents, wind patterns, volcanic activity, and solar cycles, showcases nature’s resilience and self-regulation.

Despite a slow start to the season, Northern Hemisphere total snow mass is now above the 1982-2012 average—back where it belongs (with six of the past eight seeing above-average snows):

Autumn Snow Increasing NH

The Rutgers Global Snow Lab shows large, early accumulations across northern Siberia as of September 17:
While early and heavy, this snow follows a trend.
Since records began (in 1967), Northern Hemisphere autumn snow cover has been on the up. Rutgers data show fall snow extent rising from ~18 million km² in the late 1960s to regularly exceeding 20 million km² in recent decades.
Several of the highest values on record have occurred since 2010:

Final Snow Totals Missing
«
Reply #8 on:

“The National Weather Service office in NYC still has not provided the final snowfall tallies and map for the Sunday–Monday blizzard,” laments meteorologist Chris Martz, “but they had time to create and post a map of this morning’s minor snowfall.”
The NWS has yet to release final snowfall totals or a storm map for one of New York City’s most significant blizzards in years. The last official update for Central Park and the major airports came at 1:00 p.m. EST on Monday. After that, the record stops.
Central Park’s 19.7 inches was measured just before that cutoff. But snow continued afterward.
Observations show roughly 0.1 inches of additional liquid equivalent fell, with about 0.06 inches in the first hour alone. Using a standard 10:1 ratio, that implies a potential 1.1 inches of additional accumulation, pushing the final total above 20 inches.
No clarification has been offered. No final climo numbers. No updated spotter reports. Not as of writing anyway.
If there was no additional accumulation, fine. But there was.
Conspiracy theories abound online (of course they do).
Crossing 20 inches would not change the physics of the storm, but it would push this blizzard into a more exclusive historical bracket for the city. At the same time, Polymarket and Kalshi —online markets where users wager real money on event outcomes— both set their NYC snowfall contracts with a hard 20-inch cutoff, settled strictly on official figures.
We know the game is rigged, but for me this one is probably just good’ol incompetence.
