FWI Calculator Project
« on: April 05, 2020, 01:34:44 PM »
(started a new thread Wolfie & Jenny, as previous too long)

Hi Folks, its been some time (3 years+) , but given the amount of spare time I now have (thanks COVID-19), I have rewritten great swathes of the original FWI CALCULATOR application. It is now up to version 11.2.1.112. It is available at https://www.arthurspass.com/fwicalc/

I think I have ironed out most of the Windows 10 issues. If it is already running on your system, install it to the exact same location so all the data & configuration files are maintained. There should be no issue with using "Add/Remove Programs" to remove a previous version if necessary as all config and data files are not deleted.

If you simply want to overwrite the existing version (not recommended) see the "Corrupted File" section on the website. There are now 5 application files and 2 help files. These should all be copied across. Once the new version is run, there is no turning back.

Any issues let me know via the website email! I am hoping to now keep this project running.  - Graeme - :)

Hi Graeme,
Glad to see that under the current situation you are able to utilize your extra free time in an enjoyable and productive project and share with the greater community.

I had installed FWI on my old Windows8 PC in 2013 and now in the process of moving all my weather stuff to a new Windows10 PC so a good time to install your current version.  We are not in a fire prone area here in Southwestern Ontario, Canada but it is an interesting weather addition.

You may already be aware that another weather enthusiast has built on your program and has made it part of Cumulus add-ons https://cumulus.hosiene.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=17492&p=134879#p134875

It has been further developed and I have it on my site http://www.komokaweather.com/komokaweather-ca/wxFWI.php

Enjoy,
Paul

Hi Graeme,

Paul informed  me you were back and about his message above. Good to see you updated FWIcalc to continue.

We had contact about some 8 years ago about the different Fire Weather Indicators and I always kept an eye on the developments. Having experienced many forest fires, I decided to put that experience into action. Paul said I built on your program. That is true from an inspirational point of view, not from a technical / theoretical point of view. What I built is very different and cannot be compared to what you are doing.

The link Paul gave points to my initial question on the forum, asking where FWIcalc had gone. Maybe you are interested in my own development which you can find here.

Cheers, Hans

Thanks Hans, I've read through your scientific reasoning paper with great interest, and really like the "predictive" tabulation on your website also (BTW the link on that post needs modifying "index.php" [my site] as gets a 404). Unfortunately I'm still using VWS on my weather stations, so can't experiment with your add-on (I don't think). Will put my math & fire head back on and study your algorithms & their reference papers in much more detail. Great work!

Hi Paul, good to be back. I have just moved all my wx stations to a Intel NUC (7CJYH4) running Windows10, and thus far FWICalc is performing as expected; just really savouring the lack of fan noise and all the desk space now recovered. :) Any issues let me know. Cheers - Graeme -

Thanks.
 as gets a 404).
Can't really get a view of what link you mean. I just changed the site in a major way. I assume it is gone now. I don't use PHP any more.

Thanks again ;)
Indeed, my software only runs on Cumulus data. Making it available  - with all other modules - for other pws packages is something I considered, but it would be a major decision for me and would require assistance from the other package side. So I don't see that coming soon  :blank: And of course VWS... any thought of switching?  :)

Thanks for the updates guys, very interesting to see two differing software approaches sharing code and displaying useful data for FWI.  I am still running WD but would like to start my website all over again - running in my ham fisted way for too long... and I share FWI using Brian Hamilton's code version.   (I think I share it lol!)

Anyway, its good to see the code mashers hard at their tasks and developing upgrades and improvements and sharing them!

I remember bashing away and making code to simulate the strategy for winning/playing Connect Four ... LOL!
