Unrelenting torrential rain is still flooding vast swathes of Southern China this week, destroying homes and crops, causing landslides, and forcing the evacuation of at least 80,000 people.

Local officials in SE China have revealed this week’s deluge came in at 51% above average for the time of year — the largest amount of rain for the dates since 1961.

Buildings and streets were flooded-out, and even trains along the Beijing-Guangzhou railway were reportedly delayed after rising waters blocked a bridge, state television said.

This latest deluge alone is thought to have cost the country up to $400 million (USD), with almost 126,262 hectares (312,000 acres) of farmland either severely damaged or destroyed.
