July 1972:  In contrast with the previous month, July was mild, and temperatures were warmer than in June by about 1C, which is unusual. Some growth was still reported in the north.

Rainfall: Rainfall was somewhat above normal over the greater part of the South Island, in Wellington and most of Manawatu, and west of the main ranges from Taihape to inland Bay of Plenty and Waikato, but not in Taranaki. It was somewhat below normal in eastern districts from North Canterbury to Gisborne, in Northland, and also in parts of Otago and Southland. The wettest period was from the 9th to the 11th.

549mm rainfall at Milford, 18mm at Roxburgh.

Temperatures: Temperatures were mainly above normal by 1C, but they were only about normal in coastal districts of Southland, Otago and South Canterbury.

maximum at Tokomaru Bay on the 2nd, -9.8C minimum at Molesworth on the 7th.

Sunshine: 
Sunshine was close to the normal value over the greater part of the South Island, in eastern districts of the North Island, and in Bay of Plenty and Taupo. Western districts of the North Island with Auckland and Northland and also Marlborough were favoured with 20-40 hours above normal. In Southland and Central and South Otago sunshine was mainly below normal by 20 hours.

July was the mildest month that winter, a fairly unusual event.
