Cloudy areas with a few showers in the west. Rain spreading east from afternoon, some heavy, with thunderstorms possible from Waitomo to Taranaki, easing to showers from Taranaki south in the evening and clearing Wellington.

Gisborne, Hawkes Bay, Wairarapa
Mainly fine, however patchy afternoon and evening rain.

Nelson, Marlborough
Mainly fine, but scattered morning rain.

Canterbury
Mainly fine, however brief evening showers, possibly heavy near the coast.

Otago, Southland
Few showers developing, some possibly heavy with hail in the afternoon, and snow lowering to 500 metres by evening.

Buller, Westland, Fiordland
Rain with heavy falls spreading north before dawn, easing to showers by midday. Snow lowering to 500 metres in Fiordland by evening.

Chatham Islands
Mostly cloudy. Rain developing in the evening.
