Ecowitt Wittboy revisited
« on: April 05, 2026, 03:59:15 PM »
Last May I posted about the comparison data between my 16 year old Davis VP2 and an Ecowitt Wittboy WS90 purchased 3 months earlier which sit a couple of metres apart on my North Canterbury property.
Well...... a year later, I have just put in an order for an Ecowitt WH40CH rain gauge to pair with the Wittboy receiver (GW2000) which will over-ride the Haptic rain gauge built into the Wittboy.  Many many hours were spent trying to gain any accuracy using the Haptic gauge, but in vain.  All the other sensors built into the Wittboy have compared pretty closely to the Davis and the compact nature and price make it an attractive proposition for anyone considering buying a station. Just make sure you purchase a separate rain gauge alongside.
As a side comment....... All Ecowitt installations in NZ show up on a map once installed. It's quite amazing the number of stations there are especially in the Canterbury area (100s).
Happy Easter all!

Tony:
I was just reading back over your experiences with weather stations as I am thinking of getting another one after a long gap.
Very informative, your journey with weather stations and your setup.

I purchased the Wittboy through Aliexpress complete with a receiver instead of a console for NZ$360. The recent rain gauge was from Amazon Australia for NZ$140. Amazon have a pretty extensive range of Ecowitt models. Watch out though, the prices are in Australian dollars and they add 12.5% GST on the invoice which is then subject to conversion to NZ dollars. I had a major holdup with NZ Customs here in Christchurch for the rain gauge, but received an apology from NZ Post, so importation shouldn't be a problem.
The current model receiver GW3000 is more advanced than than the GW2000 I got, in so much it takes an SD card which can still record data during power failures. The Ecowitt software is pretty impressive, so not having a console is no loss. :)
All in all, I'm very happy with the Ecowitt equipment.

I have got one thing wrong though!
The GW3000 SD card will save the data and do backups, but in the event of a power failure, of course it dies as there is no battery backup (unlike a Davis Console). Maybe a suggestion to Ecowitt for future development?  :)
