The active front that brought severe weather to many parts of the South Island and central New Zealand is now moving over the central North Island. This front is preceded by a band of heavy rain and strong or gale northwest winds, and should clear the North Island overnight or early Friday morning.

The heaviest rain is now expected north of Taupo, and a heavy rain warning remains in force for eastern Bay of Plenty. Note however, localised downpours within the rainband may affect other northern areas, including parts of Waikato, Coromandel Peninsula, Auckland and Northland. For all these areas, heavy rain and/or downpours may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly with surface flooding and slips also possible.

The strongest winds are expected ahead of the front in Gisborne and northern Hawkes Bay where gusts may reach 120km/hr until early afternoon. Winds of this strength may damage trees and powerlines and make driving hazardous, but conditions should ease during the afternoon.
