A slow-moving front lying west of the North Island and just offshore from Taranaki contains a few thunderstorms over the sea. These are expected to continue this morning and may last into the afternoon. While these storms are likely to remain offshore, there is a low risk of one or two drifting towards the coasts of northern Taranaki and northwest Nelson accompanied by localised heavy rain and small hail.

Farther north, a weak front near the outer Hauraki Gulf and eastern Northland is forecast to drift northwards, before stalling near Bay of Islands and continuing to weaken later today. There are currently heavy showers over the sea and near eastern coasts in these areas. These heavy showers are likely to continue, and there is a low risk of one or two turning thundery this morning and afternoon producing localised heavy rain and small hail.

Finally, another front over the Tasman Sea is moving east to lie just west of Fiordland late tonight. Any thunderstorms in this frontal band should remain offshore west of Fiordland through to midnight tonight.
