Has anyone played around with Arduino boards and shields? You can build your own weather station with them.
I ordered some parts to experiment with them and got side-tracked building a switch to control my main PC remotely with my smart phone. Having two homes (one in ChCh and the other at Port Robinson) I usually turn off my PC when I go to town. Often I wish I could turn it back on to grab a file or to do some housekeeping chores remotely and then turn it off again.
The parts cost me around NZ$35 on Ebay and consist of an Auduino Uno board, an Ethernet shield and a 5v single pole relay. Having a fixed IP with my internet provider simplifies everything, but you can use a free dynamic DNS service to access the switch from anywhere in the world. An element of security is built into the coding, so that hackers can't easily access it.
If anyone has played around with Arduino and would like further details and a copy of the Sketch, let me know.
cheers
Tony C.
