Weekend outlook

Posted by wwadmin on Thu, 17/01/2013 - 17:00
Filed in:National News
This weekend will be the last of our spring like pattern till anticyclones dominate next week. Saturday a front approaches the South Island then on Sunday it moves over the North Island early in the day while a southwesterly airflow then lies over the South Island. So for a look in more detail.

This coming Saturday isn’t too bad. Westerlies will flow over the North Island and skies should be mostly sunny with a few areas of cloud, cloud will be a bit more persistent from Taranaki through to Wellington however and in the evening cloud increases in all areas in the west but otherwise it’s looking like a fairly good day. The east coast as it has been many times this year will be sunny and warm.

In the South Island cloud will do it’s typical cover much of the West Coast thing and bring showers there in the afternoon, some rain for Fiordland then clearing most of the West Coast at night as the front passes. On the east coast a warm day with northwesterlies and high cloud can be expected, southerlies develop about Southland from midday and spread into Canterbury and Marlborough during the evening bringing some cloud and the low risk of a shower however.

Sunday sees the front mentioned above move over the North Island early in the morning so expect a few brief showers at first especially in most western areas then some sun in the afternoon with breezy cool southwesterlies. Eastern areas may remain dry however plenty of cloud is likely with southerlies for most of the day then easing in the evening.

The South Island is looking mainly sunny on Sunday with light winds from Nelson down through to Canterbury, a southerly breeze may sneak into Canterbury again in the evening however nothing should come of it. Southland, Otago and the West Coast will see west to southwest breezes with sunny areas and some cloud, expect the odd shower at times mainly about Southland and Fiordland.

Western SI could see heavy rain today

A frontal boundary will help to kick off showers along the western and lower Mainland today.  Some heavy rain is likely about Fiordland this morning.

According to a statement released by MetService, “In the 12 hours from midnight Friday to midday Saturday, expect around 80mm of rain. Heaviest falls from just before dawn to mid-morning, when rates could briefly reach 25mm per hour.”

MetService currently has a Heavy Rain Warning in effect for Fiordland.

As the front moves north, so will the heavy rain threat.  There is still a chance for heavy falls for the West Coast this afternoon and this evening.  But the further north you go, the small the risk for heavy rain.  So while southern Westland runs a moderate risk for heavy rain this afternoon, the threat for Nelson will be quite low by the time the precipitation arrives this evening.

Bronze Skies should Clear Today 20th January 2013
« Reply #3 on: January 20, 2013, 12:15:40 AM »
WeatherWatch.co.nz readers from up and down the country, mainly the North Island, are reporting a hazy orange/bronze tinge in the sky Saturday - and the reason for it is most likely on the other side of the Tasman Sea.
Head weather analyst Philip Duncan says a current of air is drifting across the Tasman from eastern and southern Australia.  "Across Saturday we have a nor'west flow drifting in from Australia and although it's coming from north west of us the air mass has moved up from south Australia, bringing with it smoke and dust from the Australian heatwave and bushfires".
Mr Duncan says it's at a high altitude and shouldn't pose any health risks here in New Zealand but says those with allergies or asthma may be interested in this information.
WeatherWatch.co.nz says the smoke and pollution will clear New Zealand's skies overnight as a south west change moves up the nation on Sunday.

Sunday's national forecast

Posted by wwadmin on Sun, 20/01/2013 - 07:00

Southwestern areas of both islands are in for a gloomy and perhaps wet start to Sunday - while those in the east should see a fairly good day.  Wettest will be the West Coast, driest will be the east and far north.

Upper North Island

Starts out OK but clouds build along with sou'westers and then showers.  Eastern areas, like the Bay of Islands and Bay of Plenty look set to be sunniest .
HIGHS: 21-24
Lower North Island

A rainy or showery morning for a number of these regions, improving later this morning and into the afternoon with winds from the south or south west,
HIGHS: 18-21

Upper South Island

Could be an early shower in the north otherwise improving - however clouds may build again later in the day, especially in the west, with the possibility of more rain or showers for the northern West Coast as we head towards late afternoon and tonight.
HIGHS: 18-24
Lower South Island

Heavy rain returns to the West Coast but its cloudy for Southland with a few morning showers possible. Otago may be sunnier and should remain dry.
HIGHS: 16-19
