Heat set to return to Oz

Temperatures across the southern states of Australia are set to slowly rise today before intense heat returns tomorrow and parts of the weekend.

There's been a brief respite midweek after scorching temperatures earlier had aided bushfire outbreaks in numerous areas as winds peaked at 100kph.

Tomorrow the winds are set to build but shouldn't reach the heady heights of earlier in the week. Lighter furnace like nor' westers are forecast to blow out of the interior however the fire risk is still extreme.

Yesterday 49 degrees was recorded in Western Australia in small town Lenora which is just 1.7 degrees off the all time record recorded back in 1960. Alice Springs has just broken a record with eight days above 42 degrees being recorded in a row.

Forecasters still believe parts of central Australia next week could hit 55 degrees as clear skies keep the thermometers near record levels.
The biggest factor for the country baking so far this summer is that monsoonal rains are still tracking to the north of the Northern Territory and clear skies have remained much longer than usual across the interior.

Hot weather is set for tomorrow yet again with Melbourne expecting 37 degrees, Adelaide 35 but slightly cooler conditions across Tasmainia.
A southerly change is expected to cool southern parts of South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania on Saturday but intense heat is likely to remain over New South Wales. 35 degrees is the highfor Sydney on Saturday but the western suburbs are looking at the low forties.

Heat Update for Aussie & NZ 11th January

40 degree heat returning to Australia, more heat for NZ.
Fri, 11/01/2013 - 10:50
The heat wave that has sparked dozens of bush fires in Australia is set to return today with temperatures over 40 degrees for numerous areas.
WeatherWatch.co.nz says that 40 degree highs will spread from the west coast to the Hunter Valley in the east and just about everywhere in between.
Coastal areas in the east, including Sydney, will also be hot but are not expected to suffer into the 40s, instead it should reach the low 30s.
The hot air may still be carried to the South Island helping lift eastern temperatures from time to time in New Zealand.
WeatherWatch.co.nz predicts highs into the 30s again for eastern areas of New Zealand this weekend.  Canterbury should reach the 30 degree mark on Sunday with Christchurch currently predicted to reach 29 degrees. Hawkes Bay is also expected to reach the 30 degree mark.

The NZ heat is somewhat connected to Australia but much of our warmth is being generated by typical nor'westers, more common in Spring.
While winds have eased for many centres today, especially in the North Island, gusty conditions will be off and on around the lower South Island especially for another week causing daytime highs to fluctuate as the winds ease and strengthen.
Meanwhile western Australia has a monster category 4 tropical cyclone brushing the region.
Cyclone Narelle is a category 4, out of 5, tropical cyclone and continues to intensify.  WeatherWatch.co.nz says Narelle may reach the extreme Cat 5 status today or Saturday, then will hug the western coastline potentially bringing gales and rain to Perth later this weekend before curving into the Southern Ocean, falling apart and getting caught up in the westerlies that push towards New Zealand.

I still think we can get 37c this summer because the ground is still warming up which makes it hard for night temps to get low and gives a kick to each day.

Australia suffers in heat
« Reply #3 on: January 12, 2013, 09:01:44 AM »
The heat wave across Australia has spiked to unfathomable levels as the ominously-labeled “dome of heat” blankets the continent, sparking wildfires that have caused more than $60 million in damage and claimed more than 120 homes. The average temperature stretched above 39° Celsius (102° F) for six consecutive days, and local temperatures were so high that the Australian Bureau of Meteorology was inclined to add a new hue to their heat map — a deep purple shade — which indicates a temperature above 50° C (122° F). –Time
