Observation for 24th December 2012:
Yet another very warm and humid day in the Bay of Plenty today, the aircon in my office got another serious workout this afternoon.  The prevailing wind direction has backed up a bit more into the east today and predictably it has brought more welcome rain to the parched landscape, the farmers are rejoicing with an early Christmas present, 31 mm in the last couple of days and it is still raining, my water tank is filling slowly after it was connected to half my new shed roof on Friday and thoroughly cleaned out on Saturday.  Not quite so humid and sticky tonight as it has been for the past few nights so hopefully a more comfortable night awaits us.

Current Recordings:
Sorry no current readings for this post.

Monday’s national forecast
« Reply #12 on: December 28, 2012, 08:18:12 PM »
Posted by wwadmin on Mon, 24/12/2012 - 05:00

An anticyclone lies over the South Island again today bringing mainly settled conditions. Ex tropical cyclone Evan sits just north of Northland dragging cloud over the North Island and some rain in the north and east.

Upper North Island

Mostly cloudy with the odd sunny break possible at times, gusty east to southeasterly winds strong to gale force about Northland especially in the east and north of the district. A few outbreaks of rain during the day with dry spells too. Rain may be heavy at times about Northland and Coromandel. Later in the afternoon heavy showers may develop about northern Taranaki, northern parts of the Central North Island, southern Waikato and through to eastern Bay Of Plenty with a risk of thunderstorms then easing later in the evening. Cloudy skies in Gisborne all day with brisk easterly winds and showers.
HIGHS: 25-29, 24 in Gisborne

Lower North Island

Cloudy on the east coast with showers and easterly breezes. Sunny areas and some cloud out west with east to southeast winds. Heading into Taranaki and parts of the Central North Island a few heavy showers may get going later in the afternoon then easing overnight. About Wellington expect mostly cloudy skies all day with southeasterly breezes, perhaps a risk of drizzle morning and night.
HIGHS: 28-30 in the west, 22-24 on the east coast and about Wellington.

Upper South Island

Areas of cloud morning and night with sunny breaks by day for most. Coastal Marlborough may be hindered by cloud for most of the day where there is a risk of drizzle mainly morning and night. Winds from the northeast on the east coast and tending light westerly on the West Coast. There is a chance of some drizzle overnight in Canterbury.
HIGHS: 20-24 on the West Coast. High 20’s about inland Buller. 23-25 for Nelson, Canterbury and Marlborough.

Lower South Island

Mostly sunny weather can be expected with some cloud about coastal areas mainly morning and night. Northeasterlies a little brisk on the east coast, light winds elsewhere and tending southwest about Fiordland.
HIGHS: 25-28, 28-33 in inland areas. Coastal Otago may only get to 22 or 23 degrees with a northeast breeze.

Severe weather threat update
« Reply #13 on: December 28, 2012, 08:23:46 PM »
Posted by wwadmin on Mon, 24/12/2012 - 07:06

Rain or showers continue to fall this morning over the upper part of the North Island. This includes Northland as well as the Coromandel Peninsula, Auckland and the Waikato.

Rain is expected to become more widespread as we go through the day. By this afternoon, much of the North Island will have the risk for precipitation, even though not every one will be getting wet. Aside from the upper North Island, the precipitation will be more of the "hit and miss" variety. In fact, it will be so muggy today that even when it’s not raining, the muggy air will make it feel like it’s about to rain at any time today.

The upper North Island will see areas of heavy rain today. Heavy rain continues to be a threat for today about Northland. But WeatherWatch.co.nz forecasters believe the threat for actual flooding remains fairly low.

However, Government forecaster MetService believes both much of the upper part of the North Island will likely see widespread heavy rain. For that reason they have issue Heavy Rain Warnings for Northland, Auckland (north of Whangaparoa), Great Barrier Island and Coromandel Peninsula.

WeatherWatch.co.nz and MetService forecasters both agree that rain will increase in both areal coverage and intensity late this morning and into this afternoon.

Warnings dropped for Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula
« Reply #14 on: December 28, 2012, 08:29:03 PM »
Posted by wwadmin on Mon, 24/12/2012 - 11:00

As predicted by WeatherWatch.co.nz, the threat for heavy rain for Auckland remains low. Government forecaster MetService apparently now agrees and has downgraded the Heavy Rain Warnings for Auckland to a Watch. The warnings for Great Barrier Island and the Coromandel Peninsula have also been downgraded.

The Heavy Rain Warning for Northland remains in place.

WeatherWatch.co.nz forecasters continue to predict localised, brief heavy rains, mainly for Northland. Although there is still a chance that north Auckland and the Coromandel Peninsula could see these isolated downpours as well. The further north you go, the greater the risk for seeing heavy rain.

There remains a moderate risk for some isolated street flooding due to the nature of the heavier falls.

Elsewhere on the North Island, there is also a low risk for widespread heavy rain about Gisborne and East Cape. MetService has a watch in place there as well.

However, the majority of people on the North Island will see light to moderate precipitation today or see no precipitation at all. Regardless of whether you see rain or not, it will not be a dry day for anyone with very muggy conditions in place. It feel like it's raining even when it's not raining.
