Variable thin middle cloud, may get some sun. Another cool day in prospect. However yesterday's forecast of rain and strong southerlies in the afternoon was way off - cool, but mod. winds, no rain and quite a lot of sun instead!

Current Observation: Mostly fine today after a bit of overnight rain, only a few mm but the neighbouring farmer is very happy as it will help the Turnip crop he planted last week to germinate. Heavy and threatening cloud all day today but no rain, the odd occassional light shower on the Kaimai ranges but we only got a few spits all day, the atmosphere was especially clear today. The wind has been mainly light again today with a Max gust of 34km.
Current Recordings: Temp: 10.4c Going down, Humidty: 78%, Rain: 2.4 mm, Average Wind Speed (10 Mins): 6 km/h SW, Pressure 1010.3 hPa Steady.

Upper North Island
Expect light south to southeasterly breezes, sunny areas and some cloud this morning. Chance of the odd shower too especially in the east from Auckland along the coast through to East Cape. Some rain develops this morning about the far north also. This afternoon expect showers to become widespread with heavy thundery falls in some areas, hail also possible. Expect winds to tend predominantly southwesterly in the west late afternoon. Showers ease at night but may remain heavy about the Waikato southwards into the Bay Of Plenty. Rain in Gisborne for most of the day with southeasterly winds, rain eases later in the evening.
HIGHS: 17-18 for most today, Gisborne around 14-15.
Lower North Island
Sunny areas and some cloud this morning with south to southeasterly breezes in the west, isolated showers develop this afternoon about the Central North Island and northern Taranaki in particular. Showers about the Central North Island may become heavy and thundery in the afternoon then easing later in the evening. Mostly cloudy about Wellington and Wairarapa with cool southerlies, showers ease this morning becoming few and far between. Rain in Hawkes Bay with southerlies.
HIGHS: Temperatures in the mid teens, 13-14 about Wellington and Wairarapa.
Upper South Island
Sunny this morning about Nelson and North Westland with light winds, some cloud about Buller. Isolated showers develop about the ranges of most areas late afternoon possibly becoming heavy and thundery then easing at night. in Marlborough expect showers about eastern coastal areas with south to southeasterly winds, showers clear in the afternoon with winds easing. Conditions will be sunnier in inland areas and a few isolated showers may get going late afternoon about hills and ranges then clearing at night. East to northeasterly winds developing about Canterbury this morning, a few showers about North Canterbury clear this morning, sunny areas elsewhere from morning.
HIGHS: 16-17 about Nelson and on the West Coast, 13-14 about Canterbury and Marlborough.
Lower South Island
Mostly sunny in all regions in the lower South Island with a little wispy high cloud possible, winds will be light to start this morning and for most of the day in inland areas. Northeasterly winds pick up a little along the east coast in the afternoon and winds tend westerly on the West Coast. A few clouds bubble up late in the afternoon about some inland hills and ranges leading to a shower or two possibly heavy and thundery in Central Otago which clear at night.

Auckland and surrounds have a thundery afternoon
«
Reply #17 on:

Auckland and the surrounding areas have been struck by thunderstorms this afternoon and they are still continuing, hail has fallen in quite a few areas along with torrential rain. A funnel cloud was sighted by Brian Hamilton near the Bombay Hills south of Auckland this afternoon at 3.40pm.
These storms are the result of a combination of factors. Cold air high up in the atmosphere and warm temperatures at the surface help to create an imbalance, which results in unstable conditions. Finally, converging winds at the surface under these clouds helps to trigger these storms and creates updrafts or air moving upwards in other terms.
”The cold upper air is the culprit leading to hail about the region today”, says WeatherWatch.co.nz forecaster Aaron Wilkinson.
Thunderstorms with heavy rain should push into the Waikato later this afternoon and evening as an area of convergence moves into the district then conditions will ease overnight.
