WA's big freeze continues as Jandakot hits -0.4C
« on: July 27, 2012, 09:36:00 AM »

PERTH and much of the state endured another chilly night, with numerous regional centres recording below-freezing temperatures.

In the city the temperature dropped to 1.6C at 6.49am while Jandakot dipped to -0.4C, below freezing for the second morning in a row.

Pearce, 40km east of the city, recorded an even 0C at 6.27am and Perth Airport went down to 0.5C just after 6.30am.

The big chill follows the coldest night for two years when Perth got down to 0.4C and Jandakot recorded -1.6C.

Inland, Warburton 1512km north-east of Perth, plunged to -1.5C overnight and in the Goldfields, Laverton also went below zero, recording -0.4C.

In the Central Wheatbelt, Cunderdin was again the cold spot with -0.8C, but that was warmer than yesterday's -2.7C.

In the Great Southern, Wandering was down to 0.3C, recorded at 3.20am.

And there is little relief in sight, with temperatures expected to stay in single figures overnight -- below 5C until Sunday -- and no rain in sight until Monday.

Farmers throughout the Wheatbelt are becoming increasingly desperate for rain and metropolitan catchment dams are experiencing near-record low run-offs.

Avon Descent competitors and organisers are also hoping for a late burst of rainfall to charge the Avon and Swan Rivers for next weekend's race.

Showers and possible thunderstorms are forecast for Perth late Monday through till Wednesday.

Perth has been having cold nights, but lots of brilliant days, and July rainfall record low may be cut by 50%. Also a very sunny month there.

Up north Broome having its usual dry season wall-wall sun and temps near 30C mark.
