Wet in the east today

The east coast of the North Island will be wet today with cold southerly winds possibly gale force at times about Cook Strait, Wellington and Wairarapa, it will be drier out west however a few showers still look likely at times with south to southeasterly breezes. Temperatures for tomorrow still mild north of Auckland around 17 degrees, low single figure high’s for the east coast.
Sunny on the South Islands West Coast with east to southeasterly winds and mild temperatures south of Greymouth, rain about the top of the island eases in the morning to drizzle patches. Strong southerly winds about the Marlborough coastline easing later in the day. Cloudy weather for all of the east coast with drizzle patches or showers clearing south of Kaikoura in the evening, drizzle clearing about the Otago coast in the morning. Expect south to southeasterly breezes.
A few light snow flurries are also likely down to 500m in the afternoon in Canterbury however they will clear in the evening, only small accumulations are likely.

Waitakere
Doesn't feel so damp this morning despite it being 100% humidity still - major difference this morning for us is that there is no dripping wet fog about in our area, didn't see any at all even through the valley on the way in to Auckland.
At home, the current temperature looks like it may also be the low for the while, 12.2°C with just 0.2 mm rain recorded from a shower that began before midnight.
Things should be improving from today.

Rain for the east coast of the North Island with strong cold southerly winds possibly gale force at times about coastal areas in southern Taranaki, Cook Strait, Wellington and Wairarapa, it will be drier in western regions of the island today however a few showers still look likely at times, especially in Northland. South to southeasterly breezes. Temperatures still mild north of Auckland around 17 degrees, temperatures just getting into double figures for the east coast.
Sunny on the South Islands West Coast with east to southeasterly winds and temperatures from Hokitika through to Westport between 13 and 15 degrees, rain about the top of the island eases in the morning to drizzle patches. Strong southerly winds about the Marlborough coastline easing later in the day.
Cloudy weather for all of the east coast with drizzle patches clearing in Southland and Otago in the morning with sunny breaks in the afternoon, clearing around midday in South Canterbury then clearing between Mid Canterbury and Kaikoura by evening and further north along the east coast later at night . Expect south to southeasterly breezes to ease, tending more east to northeast later in the day in the far south.
Temperatures for most in the South Island apart from the West Coast will remain in the high single figure range. A few light snow flurries are also likely down to 500m in the afternoon in Canterbury clearing in the evening and 700m in the evening in Marlborough clearing at night, only small accumulations are likely.

The cloudy weather persists over the North Island today with showers here and there, and normally in a southeasterly airflow you would get sunny breaks west of the Central North Island but not so this time. The sunnier skies look to develop in the west tomorrow. Mild temperatures north of the Waikato around 15 or 16 degrees, a few 18’s and even 19’s in Northland. Low double figure temperatures for most other areas with east to southeasterly breezes.
The South Island’s West Coast is sure getting it good, currently 16 degrees in Hokitika with clear sunny skies. North of Greymouth skies are cloudier with a few showers, Westport looks like it has had a reasonable patch of rain pass over in the last half hour.
Cloudy skies hamper the top quarter of the island with showery conditions, it is also currently cloudy along most of the east coast with showers down through into South Canterbury. Sunny breaks are now pushing into Southland however and should get into Otago and perhaps South Canterbury later this afternoon.
Nelson and Marlborough are currently around 12 or 13 degrees, cooler along most of the east coast with high single figure temperatures.

Finally some sun?

Yes finally New Zealanders should see some sun tomorrow. Mainly south of Auckland in western regions after any early showers clear, southeasterlies will remain a bit breezy during the day in our biggest city. In Northland showers could continue for much of the day as the east to southeasterly airflow there comes up and around the eastern side of the North Island. It will remain cloudy and cool on the east coast with south to southeasterly winds, expect showers although it may remain dry in the Wairarapa.
Temperatures will be cooler for most, still in the mid teens north of the Waikato / Auckland area however low double figure high’s elsewhere.
The South Island will be dry for the most part and sunny with north to northeast breezes after a frosty start, perhaps a little drizzle still in the morning around the Kaikoura coastline however it should clear with sunny breaks then increasing. Later in the day some drizzle will make it’s way into Fiordland. Temperatures remaining cool between 9 or 11 degrees, a degree or two warmer about Nelson and north of Hokitika on the West Coast.
The end of the working week and start to the weekend on Saturday looks nice weather wise as well for most however no overly warm temperatures in some areas like how it has been recently. Typical winter time high’s in the low double figure range for the South Island, low to mid teen temperatures in the north. A few showers may still affect north of Hawkes Bay along the east coast.
