Moe (Listeni/ˈmoʊ.i/ MOH-ee)[2] is a city[3] in the Latrobe Valley and Gippsland region of Victoria, Australia. It is about 135 kilometres (80 mi) east of Melbourne and at the 2006 census Moe itself had a population of 15,582 (includes Newborough and Yallourn North). The Latrobe Valley, which consists of the region within a 35 to 40 km radius of Moe, has a population of approximately 120,000. It is administered by the Latrobe City Council. Moe was originally known as The Mowie, The name is believed to derive from a Kurnai (local Indigenous) word meaning 'swamp land'.

It is an unusual event, said Professor Mike Sandiford of the School of Earth Sciences at the University of Melbourne. “It was a significant shaking event. We don’t often get earthquakes which shake much of Melbourne.’
 
The Federal Minister responsible for insurance, Bill Shorten, says he understands it is the biggest earthquake in the area “in 109 years”.
