North Island, a few showers in the west, showers and cold southerlies developing in the east. South Island, showers clearing and becoming fine in the west, showers in the east, clearing inland. Snow gradually lowering to 100 metres in the south.

Tuesday
North Island, becoming fine in the west, cold and showery in the east. Snow may affect high level roads. South Island, mostly fine in the west and inland, coastal showers in the east. Showers, and snow to low levels in the south.

Wednesday Thursday Friday.
North Island, occasional showers about Wellington and in the east. Mainly fine elsewhere with frosts south of Auckland. South Island, often cloudy in the south and near the east coast with a few showers. Fine elsewhere with frosts.

We will see lots of lows hanging around New Zealand next week, but it doesn’t look like any of them will actually get close enough to unsettle our weather.
But, of course, there is an exception to that rule.  The exception is the lower and eastern regions of both islands.
On Monday, most of the South Island will see at least a chance for showers.  The southern and eastern regions have the best chance of getting wet.  The North Island looks dry except for Wairarapa and Gisborne where a few showers may pop up, especially late in the afternoon and evening.
On Tuesday, the drier weather settles on to the South Island.  The deep south could still see some precipitation.  Some snow showers are possible late Tuesday into Wednesday about inland Otago as temperatures drop below zero overnight.  The North Island is looking at another settled day with the exception of Gisborne and Wellington where a few showers are possible.
For Wednesday, the precipitation chances will continue about the deep south.  Christchurch could see a bit of rain pop up late on Wednesday into Thursday morning.  Even a few flakes snow could be mixed in at sea level with temperatures getting close to zero.  Higher elevations aren’t likely to see any snow as the precipitation isn’t likely to extend that far inland.  North Island is looking dry except for Gisborne and Wellington with another chance for showers.
For Thursday and Friday, more dry and settled weather is ahead for both islands.  Even the deep south should have a chance to dry out a bit.
Next weekend has a big question mark on it.  It is too early to make a really solid forecast anyway, but adding to the uncertainty is a broad area of low pressure that is expected to move across the Tasman.  Current timing has it arriving on the South Island late on Sunday and then the North Island about 12 hours after that.

More cold and snow on the way for the South Island

Another blast of snow and cold is on the way, but it doesn't look as intense as last week.

Christchurch could end up with sleety snow showers down to 300m tomorrow afternoon…lasting into tomorrow night.

By Tuesday morning, snow levels may drop to 200m on the peninsula.  The precipitation is expected to ease by evening.  Highs on Tuesday are expected to be around 6.

Gale force winds are possible about the eastern regions of Southland and Otago.  A few flakes of snow are also possible late Monday into Tuesday.  Accumulations aren’t likely, but the wind could combine with the snow to reduce visibility and make driving hazardous.

Light rain or snow is also possible about the West Coast and Nelson tomorrow as the colder air moves in.  Highs in Nelson tomorrow are expected to be in the mid teens.  On Tuesday, they probably won’t clear 10.

Monday's national forecast

Cold and snow are set to return to the South Island today.  Although the snow isn’t looking quite as intense as last week, it could still cause a few travel problems.  Snow showers will be likely down to around 200 metres for parts of higher coastal areas of Canterbury, Otago and Southland as the cold front moves through later today.

The West Coast could also see some precipitation today, although that is likely to remain in the form of rain.

Gisborne and Hawkes Bay could also see rain showers.  But those should hold off until late today or this evening.

The rest of the country is in for a mix of sun and clouds today with just a few light showers possible about Auckland.

Cold to tackle southern cities

Not for the first time this winter that the south is grabbing the weather headlines and Dunedin, Timaru and Christchurch are set yet again to take on a wintry southerly.

"It's quite unsual to have such cold conditions so early in the season" says South Island weather analyst Richard Green" Traditionally we have the coldest weather about four to six weeks after the shortest day and we're still ten days away from it and so a few of us are wondering what could happen next".

WeatherWatch.co.nz believes this southerly doesn't have the same oomph that what was witnessed last week but it'll still be cold nonetheless.Ice has been an issue for drivers in the south and the combination of ice and black ice has made some roads treacherous.

The snow and cold though has been great news for two skifields that opened up over the weekend for the season.
Mt Hutt saw about 1500 skiers hit the slopes on Saturday and further south Coronet Peak got underway for 2012.

Cold temperatures are expected to remain over much of the south this week and eastern areas could be the chilliest region of all as the southerly hangs around.

The southern half of the North Island will see the southerly move across the strait tomorrow with icy southerlies and a taste of winter for many.

WeatherWatch.co.nz says the bitter cold has yet to fully envelop the North Island so far this winter but it will just be a matter of time as the fronts continue to move in from the south.

Tuesday's national forecast

Today it's a case of where the southerly delivers some showers in the east but western and northern parts of the country are sheltered and get the best conditions.

Cold winds are pushing over eastern shores and this time it includes the North island. It doesn't appear to be overly wet but snow is forecast to drift down to relatively low levels in the south and a smattering is expected to around mid levels in the north.

Winds look to pick up a little more in eastern districts compared to yesterday and pack a bit of  a punch at times with a very fresh feel expected.

Elsewhere mostly sunny skies with just a few cloudy areas should dominate the skies.

East looking cold and West mostly sunny

Well the most severe yesterday yesterday belonged to the far south and today some of that activity is likely to head north but basically remain about the coastline of eastern parts of the country.

Auckland yesteday saw showers come and go but today is looking more settled and slightly milder.

Much of the North Island should be drier overall compared to yesterday but Wellington, Masterton, Napier, Hastings and Gisborne are likely to see cooler temperatures today as a southerly keeps a lid on the temperature and a few showers with snow lowering as well about the hills.

"The southerly yesterday didn't pack much of a punch over central areas of the South Island as expected although the far south saw more of the action" says weather analyst Richard Green."Today could be a little more volatile in those areas and the southerly also is likely to move over southern and eastern areas of the North island it seems".

WeatherWatch.co.nz believes the southerly will hang about eastern shorelines for parts of the week ahead delivering the coldest air there and a few showers could move in from time to time with a sou' wester whipping up.

Skies appear brightest in the west and north today and frosts are also likely over central and inland southern regions this week overnight away from the wind.

Temperatures still look below par this week for southern and eastern districts despite Gisborne yesterday hitting a heady nineteen degrees.

Wednesday's national forecast

A ridge of high pressure to our west will be our weather-maker for today.

A broad southwest flow will keep things a bit on the chilly side.  The flow could also produce a few areas of precipitation for the deep south.  Rain showers are possible about Southland and Otago.  Some snow could be mixed in with the rain this morning about inland Southland and Central Otago.

Otherwise, the rest of the country is looking at a dry and settled day.  A fair amount of sunshine is expected.  Highs will be mainly in the low to mid teens, although the deep south may have a rough time making the double digits this afternoon.

Northland, Auckland and Coromandel
Cloud increasing and showers developing early morning. Clearing from the south at night.

Waikato to northern Taranaki, Bay of Plenty, the central high country and Manawatu.
Showers, mainly in the west, with some snow on the Desert Road before dawn. Clearing during the morning for a fine afternoon.

Southern Taranaki, Wanganui, Kapiti, Wellington and Gisborne to Wairarapa.
Showery, with snow above 600 metres, but long fine breaks inland in Hawkes Bay and Gisborne. The showers frequent and heavier in Wellington and Wairarapa in the evening.

Inland Marlborough, the Sounds, Nelson and Buller
Cloud and remaining showers clearing before dawn, then fine.

Westland and Fiordland
Fine.

From the Kaikoura Ranges and coast down to Southland
Showers, with snow above 400 metres, gradually clearing inland parts of Otago and Southland, but becoming frequent and heavier farther north in the afternoon.

Drivers are being urged to take extreme care with snow and ice reported on Rimutaka Hill Rd this morning.
Snow flurries had been forecast, but no significant accumulation was expected.
Police communications centre spokesman Mark Oliver said there were reports of black ice in the area.
"That can be even more of a problem. They don't see it, go to brake and then everything turns to custard."
Wellington is in for another chilly day, with the current temperature at 7.9 degC.
Metservice said showers and snow above 600m were expected in Kapiti, Wellington, Gisborne to Wairarapa, Southern Taranaki and Wanganui.
Showers would be more frequent and heavier in Wellington and Wairarapa this evening.
A deep low to the east and high pressure to the west had been pushing a cold southerly flow over New Zealand since Tuesday.
MetService said the cold weather was expected to start clearing on Saturday, but it wouldn't feel warmer across the country until Monday.
"We'll have northerlies and warmer weather for the whole nation," they said.
