Heavy rainfall in Chile has killed at least 10 people and destroyed or severely damaged over 1,000 homes, officials said Monday, as the government declared a state of emergency. Since last week, rain has lashed the typically arid northern regions of Coquimbo and Atacama, where such intense levels of precipitation are highly unusual. At least 10 people have died, 17 have suffered injuries and four have been reported missing, Alicia Cebrian, director of Chile's SENAPRED national emergency service, told a press briefing Monday. Over 1,100 homes have been destroyed or severely damaged due to the extreme weather, according to official figures. The "increasingly serious" conditions prompted President Jose Antonio Kast to declare a state of emergency in the affected areas on Monday, he announced to the press. The measure allows the government to deploy the military, restrict freedom of movement and quickly mobilize aid. Rising rivers have blocked roads and isolated communities, while mud and power cuts have disrupted drinking water supplies in Coquimbo. "What normally rains in a month fell in an hour" on Sunday, deputy interior minister Maximo Pavez told reporters, calling the rainfall "abnormal and extreme." Greenland’s ice sheet logged another net surface gain on July 23, adding 0.095 gigatons—95 million metric tons—during the heart of the melt season. Not a large gain, but the fact that there was a gain at all is the story. It’s the height of summer. The latest map shows widespread gains, with small losses largely confined to two coastal margins in the SW and NE. The 2025-26 accumulated surface mass balance (SMB) now stands at 573 Gt, well above the 1981-2010 mean: Surface mass balance (SMB) measures snow and ice accumulation against meltwater runoff, sublimation and evaporation; it does not include iceberg calving or melting beneath the ice sheet. This is a counterpoint often used by alarmists. Fine. But even when taking everything into account, total mass balance (TMB) shows a clear recovery trend in recent decades: Greenland Ice Sheet annual mass balance from GRACE/GRACE-FO satellites. Total balance is recovering. A note of perspective for the alarmists: Greenland contains roughly 2.7 million Gt of ice. Satellite records put its average net loss between 1992 and 2020 at 169 Gt a year—about 0.006% of the ice sheet annually. Proportionally, the headline decline is tiny. [NSIDC and Otosaka et al. (2023)] For further perspective, Greenland’s glaciers and ice caps are larger today than they were through much of the Holocene. From about 8,000 to 3,700 years ago, at least 75% of the reconstructed glaciers were smaller than today or absent entirely. During the peak warm interval, roughly 6,800 to 5,900 years ago, that figure reached 94% (study). A major winter storm has buried the Andes of Chile and Argentina beneath extraordinary amounts of snow. At Chile’s Portillo ski area, more than 4.5 m (15 ft) has fallen, with officials describing the duration and intensity of the storm as “highly unusual.” All road and air access remains closed, along with the resort itself, as the snow continues accumulating. Border official Osvaldo Valle said “we are in the middle of a historic snowfall” after 4 m (13.1 ft) fell at Las Cuevas and more than 3 m (9.8 ft) at both Los Libertadores and Portillo. Forecasts are calling for 5 m (16.4 ft) before the storm is out. Valle said the event surpasses major previous winter episodes, including the deadly July 1984 storm. On the Argentine side, officials report roughly 4 m (13.1 ft), with more than 2 m (6.6 ft) at Puente del Inca and up to 1 m (3.3 ft) at lower elevations. Snow became so deep near Los Penitentes, residents, tourists and workers were evacuated as food and heating supplies ran low. The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season has so far produced just two named storms. Both formed in the Gulf. Both were heavily sheared and lopsided. Neither became a hurricane. Bertha reached barely 60 mph (97 km/h) despite moving over warm water, but it is essentially half a storm. High wind shear and dry air have exposed its circulation center and shoved nearly all its thunderstorms to the south. Without that shear, Bertha could already be a hurricane. Instead, weakening is expected before a likely tropical-storm landfall in Louisiana on Wednesday. Its future beyond Louisiana depends on how much time it spends over land. The current NHC track carries the weakened system briefly back over water before taking it into southeastern Texas as a tropical depression. [@MattDevittWX] Certain computer models were considerably more dramatic. Before Bertha had even developed a reliable center, the high-resolution GRAF model—used by television stations across the US—depicted a tightly wound cyclone with an eye approaching the Gulf Coast. At the forecast time, the actual satellite image showed a disorganized, heavily sheared tropical storm nowhere near the modelled depiction. The GRAF model’s alarming run was ready-made for television because detailed computer-generated catastrophe sells better than uncertainty. Extreme cold has persisted at Antarctica, namely Concordia Station, where temperatures remained below -80C (-112F) for a fourth consecutive day on July 20. The run began on July 11 at -73.6C (-100.5F), followed by -75.5C on July 12, then by -76C on July 13 and 14, -79.4C on July 15, -79.6C on July 16, -82.8C on July 17 and -84.1C (-119.4F) on July 18. Concordia then registered -82.7C on July 19, before reaching a provisional -80.7C (-113.3F) on July 20. That makes ten straight days below -100F and four straight below -112F. The -84.1C reading on July 18 was the third-lowest at Concordia since its continuous record began in 2005 and the lowest measured air temperature anywhere on Earth since Vostok reached -84.2C (-119.6F) in September 2012. A slight warm-up is forecast over the coming days. But the depth and persistence of what Concordia has just witnessed is exceptional: From July 16-20, the average of the five daily minima was -82C (-115.6F)—the third-lowest five-day average in Concordia’s observational history. On July 18, Concordia Station at Dome C plunged to -84.1C (-119.4F) at 6:25 UTC—the lowest measured air temperature on Earth since Vostok reached -84.2C (-119.6F) in September 2012. ClimAntartide confirmed the reading—the third-lowest at Concordia since observations began in 2005 (record remains the -84.7C (-120.5F), set on August 13, 2010). The station’s daily maximum struggled to just -76.9C (-106.4F). Daily records also fell at Dome Fuji. The station dropped to -80.4C (-112.7F) on July 17, breaking the date record of -79.8C (-111.6F) from 1999. On July 18, it plunged to -81.9C (-115.4F), besting the previous mark of -78.9C (-110F), also from 1999. The cold engulfed the wider Antarctic Plateau. Automatic weather stations recorded -72C (-97.6F) at Henry, -75C (-103F) at Nico—both near the South Pole—and -81C (-113.8F) at Dome CII near Concordia. Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station posted a maximum of only -70.8C (-95.4F) on July 17, with the following day reaching a max of just -71C (-95.8F). The minimum for Saturday came in at -76.2C (-105.2F) and so broke the July 18 daily record of -75.7C (-104.3F) set in 2006. The weekend made for the coldest multi-day stretch at the South Pole since August 2–3, 2019.

Ocean Temperatures and the Developing El Niño Event As ocean temperatures continue to warm through early 2026 across the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean, climate forecasters are calling this the start of what may be one of the strongest El Niño events in recent decades. The following will examine two previous "very strong" El Niño events and some of the similarities with the currently developing El Niño event over the Pacific Ocean. What Is the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and an El Niño Event? ENSO is a Pacific Ocean phenomenon that describes the variation in surface winds and sea surface temperatures (SSTs) across the tropical Pacific Ocean. There is a well-established connection between heat energy stored in the ocean and wind stresses in the lower atmosphere. The ENSO cycle has three phases: Neutral La Niña El Niño In a Neutral ENSO phase, near normal SSTs see cool waters over the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean (and along the northwest coast of South America) and warmer waters over the western tropical Pacific Ocean (north and northeast of Australia) drive trade winds from east to west across the equatorial Pacific Ocean. Rising, moist air north of Australia leads to seasonal high rainfall, whereas descending air over the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean results in drier conditions. Heavier monsoon rainfall, which normally occurs over the western tropics, is suppressed by cooler SSTs and a broad region of background descending air.
