Title: NZ weather summary July 1958
Post by: Rwood on May 06, 2018, 08:28:57 PM
July 1958: It was another month of comparatively low rainfall. It was also very cloudy in the northeast and very frosty in the south. Dry conditions were generally favourable to stock, but in some areas the cold was considered too severe.
Rainfall: Rainfall was below average, except in the Auckland and Taranaki provinces. In Wairarapa, Canterbury, Central Otago and Fiordland it was less than half the normal value. Parts of North Canterbury received almost no rain. On the other hand, it was a very wet month in the Whangarei - Bay of Islands area, with totals ranging from 200mm to 500mm. Exceptionally heavy hailstorms were reported in New Plymouth, Auckland and Opotiki on the 23rd.

Temperatures: Temperatures were mainly close to normal over the North Island. However, in the South Island it was colder than usual, and over most of Canterbury, Otago and Southland departures exceeded 1.0-1.5C. For Alexandra, with a mean temperature of -0.5C, it was coldest of any month in 30 years of record. A few places in inland Canterbury and Central Otago had ground frosts every day of the month.

Sunshine was appreciably below normal of most of the North Island and parts of Central Otago. For eastern districts of the North Island from Bay of Plenty to Hawkes Bay and also for Alexandra it was the cloudiest July on record. [Some of these records have been broken since, but in the case of Alexandra the site visibility horizon has almost certainly deteriorated. Westland and some inland parts of the South Island had a surplus.]
