A South Auckland man has pleaded guilty to driving a vehicle into two young girls, then trying to leave the scene.
Fereti Aiono, 27, pleaded guilty to four charges - including causing bodily harm while in charge of a vehicle, driving while disqualified and failing to stop at the scene of an accident - in Manukau District Court today.
Judge Ajit Swaran Singh remanded Aiono in custody until his sentencing in July.
The incident happened in December last year in Manurewa, South Auckland.
Aiono is alleged to have driven about 103kmh in a 50kmh zone and then lost control of his Ford Fairmont car and swerved into two girls, aged eight and 11, on the footpath.
Police allege Aiono drove with a breath alcohol reading of 503mcg. The legal limit is 400mcg.
After hitting the girls, Aiono tried to restart his car and leave the scene.
The eight-year-old girl spent Christmas in a serious but stable condition in Auckland's Starship Children's Hospital. The 11-year-old recovered at home.
The two are friends.
Judge Singh directed Aiono to attend a restorative justice conference with the families of the girls, if they wished to attend.
