Thus began yesterday’s announcement from the National Weather Service in Anchorage. Not just for the day, not just for the month, but for the entire season.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AS OF 4 PM AKDT SATURDAY AFTERNOON…3.4 INCHES OF NEW SNOW HAS FALLEN SINCE MIDNIGHT. THIS MAKES THE 2011-2012 WINTER SEASON THE SNOWIEST EVER WITH A TOTAL OF 134.5 INCHES. THE PREVIOUS SEASONAL SNOWFALL RECORD WAS 132.6 INCHES SET IN 1954-1955.
During a normal winter Anchorage receives only 75 inches of snow, says John Papineau, climatologist at the Anchorage office of the National Weather Service.
“Although the official snowfall measurement is taken in west Anchorage, snow depth varies greatly across town,” says Papineau, “On the upper Hillside for example several locations have measured more than 200 inches of snow this season.”
The city lacked 2.5″ of breaking the record going into Easter weekend, said NBC station KTUU..
But then came the snow, with about 0.8″ accumulating on Friday and a couple more inches overnight and during Saturday.
“The winter of 2011-2012 is now the snowiest winter on record in Anchorage.”

Pleased we live here Mark. Think the worst we have had is 11 inches 280mm in 1945. Even though the 2011 was not a good one either with 30cm falling parts.
A timeline of Canterbury snowfalls
Significant snow storms occurred in Christchurch in 1862, 1895, 1896, 1901, 1918, 1945, 1992, 2006, and 2011.

Thanks for that Mark - very interesting - so by rights we should not expect another really good snow storm till 2033. Well here is hoping - lovely to see fall and great photography but that is about all.
Not holding my breath though with what they have had overseas - so have snow chains on order for the CRV.
Have puchased a very large diesel generator as well after the 2006 one and hooked up through the house - as do like my electric blanket going.
