Winter is about to strike with force across Norway, particularly central regions.

Starting Thursday (Nov 13), fierce polar air will sweep south, replacing autumn’s rain with snow across the likes of Nordfjord, Møre og Romsdal, and Trøndelag.

The snow line is dropping rapidly to below 300 m (980 ft) —forecast to sink even lower throughout Thursday— as flurries spread south from northern Trøndelag. Totals could reach a foot in just 24 hours, with significantly more in mountain areas.

Authorities have issued a snow warning, citing difficult driving conditions and possible delays in air and public transport.

As the cold air deepens into the weekend, the snow is forecast to build early over the wider Scandinavia region.

Title: Scandinavia Shivers, Wind Turbines Freeze
Post by: Mark on February 15, 2026, 08:35:10 AM
A deep, persistent Arctic pattern has locked Scandinavia into one of its harshest starts to a year in decades, delivering extreme cold to inland Norway and crippling wind power output across Finland.

In central Norway, we’re only 38 days into 2026 but Roros has logged 15 days below -30C (-22F). That threshold has not been reached so frequently this early in the year since 1942, when 21 such days were recorded by early February.

Farther east, the same air mass has exposed a critical (and obvious) vulnerability in Finland’s energy system.

Wind power generation has slumped toward near-standstill as prolonged subfreezing conditions ice turbine blades and force operators to shut down equipment to prevent damage.

According to grid operator Fingrid Oyj, wind farms were producing only a tiny fraction of installed capacity last week, despite Finland’s heavy reliance on wind during winter demand peaks.

Title: Norway’s Coldest February In 16 Years

Norway has recorded its coldest February since 2010, according to the Norwegian Meteorological Institute.

National temperatures averaged 3.1C below the norm in February, with the broader winter season coming in 1.5C below average.

The cold was strongest in the north.

Karasjok, in Finnmark, posted a monthly average of -19.1C (-2.4F), about 5.2C (9.4F) below normal.

Across the country, 17 stations recorded their coldest February, while two stations set new all-time monthly mins.
