An unusually heavy snowfall has struck Zavkhan province in western Mongolia, the National Agency for Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring reported Monday.
The snow hit several soums (administrative subdivisions), including Uliastai, Yaruu, Ider, Aldarkhaan, Tsagaankhairkhan, Shiluustei, and Otgon, on Sunday and Monday.
Precipitation in the affected areas averaged 25-30 centimeters, with snow depths reaching up to 60 centimeters in mountainous regions.
Temperatures in these areas are expected to plunge to minus 2 degrees Celsius following the snowfall, the agency said. Authorities have warned the public, particularly nomadic herders and drivers, to take extra precautions against potential hazards.
Mongolia is known for its harsh continental climate, marked by long, frigid winters and short summers. Zavkhan province, located in the country's west, is among the regions that regularly experience some of the nation's coldest winter temperatures.

Winter has arrived abruptly across northern China, with Hulunbuir, Inner Mongolia, hit by its first widespread snowfall.
Snow began across Hulunbuir’s northern and western forest districts on Sept 29-30, blanketing Genhe and falling through Hailar.
Temperatures have crashed with it.
Across northern Qinghai, Gansu, Ningxia, northern Shaanxi, North China and eastern Northeast China, temperatures fell 6–10C (11–18F) on Sept 30, with local plunges of 12–16C (22–29F).
The freezing line is pushing south into northern Hebei. Reinforcing the chill will be a second air mass on Oct 3-4, which is forecast to knock another 8–10C (14–18F) off temperatures across swaths of northern China.
Summer’s close had already been running cold in places.
Beijing officially entered autumn on Sept 8—five days earlier than normal and its earliest onset since 2016. From Sept 8-15, average minimum temperatures ran 2.5C (4.5F) below the 1991-2020 norm, making it the coldest such period since 2007.
Winter is advancing south.
