Vancouver Island’s roads have been besieged by extreme snowfall events of late, and clearing crews are losing the battle, despite working 12-hour shifts.
During snowstorms, Mainroad, a company responsible for snow clearing operations throughout B.C. and Alberta, operates flat-out and with all available resources, said Chris Cowley, the company’s North Island general manager, who called the recent snowfall events “extraordinary.”
“We see events like this pretty rarely,” he said. “In ‘96 we had a similar scenario and then in ‘71– it’s not very common.”
Responding to complaints of it taking a long time to the clear the roads, and also concerns that supplies of salt are running low, Cowley said the company’s resources are designed around average events — meaning extreme events stretch its resources.
“In these extraordinary times, we just appreciate everyone being patient,” he said. “We will get there when we can, and we’re sparing no resources, that’s for sure.”
According to a report by vancouverisland.ctvnews.ca, meteorologists say snowstorms are becoming stronger and more frequent on Vancouver Island than in decades past — a complete contradiction to the original global warming hypothesis which called for decreasing heavy snowstorms due to milder winter temperatures.

A major winter storm slammed much of the eastern United States with snow, ice and high winds over the weekend, causing travel chaos and widespread power outages.
Winter weather alerts stretched more than 1,000 miles (1,609 km) from Alabama to Maine, with the governors of Georgia, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina all declaring emergencies due to the storm.
200,000 homes and businesses in New York State, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia were STILL without power into the early hours of Monday morning, according to poweroutage.us.
While in North Carolina, where a host of all-time snowfall records were broken, and at least two people are known to have died.
Focusing on the snow records, they were plentiful and widespread. To highlight just a few:
Ronald Reagan Airport and Dulles Airport, both Virginaia, busted daily records over the weekend, and a number of flights were cancelled (a total of 3,000+ into or out of the U.S. on Sunday alone, with 8,000+ delayed, according to FlightAware data).
Buffalo, New York’s 10 inches (25.4cm) of snow on Sunday broke the daily record of 8.3 inches (21cm) from 1958.
While Asheville, North Carolina also received 10 inches on Sunday, which took out the previous record of 7 inches (17.8cm) set back in 1891 (some reports have the year at 1881):

RECORD COLD VALENTINE’S DAY
Several Ontario cities were among the many locales to set new low temperature records on Valentine’s Day, as Arctic air gripped the entire eastern half of North America.
Greater Sudbury logged a low of -30.4C on Monday, breaking its previous record of -28.8C set in 2003; North Bay dipped to -35C, busting its old benchmark of -33.9C set way back in 1943; while Sault Ste. Marie pipped its 1974 record by 0.2C, hitting a new low of -30.8C.
The full list of busted records is exhaustive — Monday’s low temperature anomalies stretched from the edge Greenland all the way down to Florida and southern Mexico:

At least 17 low temperature records were broken in British Columbia alone on Wednesday, according to Environment Canada data, as Arctic air parked itself over the province, and indeed over much of the the country, too.
The majority of the fallen records date back decades, with the oldest being the city of Duncan’s -7.2C (18.1F) which, until Wednesday’s -7.7C (18.1F), had held for 105 years–since the year 1917 (the Centennial Minimum).
Other temperature records broken in B.C. (in degrees Celsius) include:
Campbell River: -9.5 bested the -6.6 from 1982; Hope Slide: -16.5 beat the -14.8 set in 1979; Malahat: -7 broke the -6.3 set 2011; Nanaimo: -7.5 vs -5.6 (sate set not indicated); Port Alberni: -9.5 vs -7.2 from way back in 1922; Port Hardy: -4.6 pipped the -4.3 set in 1982; Powell River: -5.5, vs -4.5 from 2017; Qualicum Beach: -6.9 vs -4.6 set in 2018; Sechelt: -4.7 vs -3.6 from 2018; Sparwood: -28.2 vs -26.7 set back in 1956; Squamish: -6.1 vs -5.5 from 2018; Tofino: -4 broke the old record of -3.3 set in 1982; Trail: -17.4 vs -17.1 from 2018; Victoria: -6 pipped the -5.9 set in 1993; West Vancouver: -5.7 usurped the -3.1 from 2018; White Rock: -5.5 bested the -4.4 set in 1957.

CANADA’S EXCEPTIONALLY COLD FEBRUARY
February in Canada held very cold. The nation’s temperature anomaly finished at an impressive -1.36C below the 1991-2020 baseline. It was especially chilly in the central areas — as much as -6C below the norm in Yellowknife.
Peter Kimbell, a warning preparedness meteorologist (???) at Environment Canada, said the mean daily temperature recorded for February was –16.9C (1.6F), which is almost a full five degrees lower than average for the month.
“Five degrees is considerably below average,” said Kimbell. “And we had quite a few days of minus 30 degrees overnight lows. In fact, you hit –36 on February 24th, and –34.5 on February 25th.”
Image
Canada’s Feb, 2022 Temp Anomalies [@Pat_wx].
February followed what was a very cold January, too, amplifying the misery for Canadians: “If people were moaning about [the cold], it’s for good reason,” added Kimbell. “It’s entirely warranted, because five degrees below normal in the middle of wintertime is very cold.”
Along with the anomalous freeze, unusually high volumes of snow were also noted: 67cm (2.2ft) settled last month at Hazelwood Lake, just north of Thunder Bay, with the long-term February average at the site sitting at just 27cm (10.6 inches).
It is unusual to have both a cold and snowy month, noted Kimbell, as it tends to be drier when the temperature drops.

RECORD COLD GRIPS CANADIAN PRAIRIES
Record cold has been persisting across the Canadian Prairies as low solar activity continues to buckle the jet stream.
Hundreds of unprecedented low temperatures for the time of year are being reported this week, including the -21.9C (-7.4F) in Wasagaming, MB; the -19.5C (-3.1F) in Broadview, SK; the -18.9C (-2F) in Estevan, SK; the -18.5C (-1.3F) in Melita, MB; the -18.4C (-1.1F) at Cypress River, MB; the -18.2C (-0.8F) Weyburn, SK; and the -17.2C (1F) in Brandon, MB — to name just a handful.
North America’s spring freeze is forecast to persist today, Tuesday, April 19, too.
This is visualized by the University of Maine’s Climate Reanalyzer tool (shown below) which is also suggesting that the world’s average temperature anomaly today will be 0C against the 1979-2000 base:

QUEBEC’S LONGEST-STREAK BELOW 20C
The entire Canadian Province of Quebec hasn’t seen the temperature hit 20C (68F) since October 21, 2021 as historic chills –due to historically low solar activity and a weak and wavy jet stream flow– continue to persist across “La Belle Province”.
October 21 to now (April 20) is 183 days — that’s how long Quebecers have been waiting for their thermometers to read 20C (68F), with the forecast suggesting spring will continue to stall across the province, even into May:

It’s been exceptionally cold in Northern Canada of late.
The far-northern territory of Nunavut has been busy busting records. On Wednesday, May 25 the mercury at Hall Beach plunged to a moose-hugging -22.2C (-8F), which, according to the official weather books, is a national record for this time of year.
Worth noting, Canada’s record low for the month of June stands at -20.6C (-5.1F), registered at the same location, Hall Beach; while the low for the entire Northern Hemisphere as a whole is the -22.2C (-8F) logged at Mys Sterlegova and Andreya Island (Russia).

Even though we’re into June –the start of meteorological summer– there are regions of Canada still dealing with freezing lows and heavy snows.
Northern parts of Manitoba, for example, are contending with heavy accumulations through Thursday as an unseasonable Arctic front continues to ride anomalously-far south on the back of a weak and wavy ‘meridional‘ stream flow.
Manitoba’s brutal northerly winds and sizable accumulations of snow have even led Environment Canada to issue a winter storm warning for the province’s northern tiers. The agency’s official forecast is for 30cm (11.8 inches) to fall Thursday, to go along with the 20-30cm that settled Wednesday.
It wouldn’t be a true start to summer in Canada without winter storm warnings and snow, reports theweathernetwork.com, who provide the following graphics.

https://www.sott.net/article/472446-Fiona-makes-landfall-in-Canada-leaving-hundreds-of-thousands-without-power
One of the strongest storms ever to hit Canada slammed into Nova Scotia's coastline early Saturday, leaving hundreds of thousands of people without power.
Former Hurricane Fiona made landfall early on Saturday morning over Guysborough county on the northeast corner of mainland Nova Scotia, Canada's weather service said. There were maximum sustained winds of almost 81 mph, while peak gusts of over 100 mph were detected, it added.
It is the lowest pressured land falling storm on record in Canada, according to the Canadian Hurricane Center, which also described hurricane-force gusts battering the area. More than 40% of the population in Nova Scotia is affected by power outages, according to utility company Nova Scotia power.
Previously a hurricane, the National Hurricane Center declared that Fiona morphed into a post-tropical cyclone as it bolted north, exhibiting characteristics of storms with both tropical and high-latitude pedigree.

Heavy, early-season snow has been clipping Canada, too — record breaking, in fact, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) meteorologists.
A Wyoming Low slammed into south-central Saskatchewan Sunday and dumped massive amounts of powder.
Moose Jaw was one of the locales to take a direct hit, and suffered widespread power outages across the area as a result.
“Looks like anywhere from 25 – 40 cm (10 – 16 inches) fell in and around Moose Jaw,” said Terri Lang, ECCC Meteorologist.
“We do not record snow anymore anywhere in the province. It’s always a challenge in the winter to try and find snowfall amounts — we get some idea from our automatic weather station at the airport which uses a laser that points down and measures the depth that way, but of course, in Saskatchewan, it’s windy so the snow depth varies quite a bit in the wind, so we kind of use that as a guideline,” said Lang, adding that the agency uses volunteers and social media to better estimate how much snow fell.
Two Moose Jaw residents shared snow depth from their yards on Sunday, which ranged from 33 – 45 cm (13 – 18 inches). Based on these ranges, the area annihilated its previous snowfall record for October 23, usurping the 6 cm (2.4 inches) that fell back in 1997.
For reference, snowfall records date back to 1943 in Moose Jaw.

North America's big freeze is making worldwide news.
As reported by the timesofindia.com, the NWS has called the Arctic blast "life-threatening winter weather" and have urged people to stay safe and prepared.
Starting in Canada, records are continuing to tumble here — the cold has really been quite invasive across the Great White North.
Here's a comment I received from reader "Jim":
This was our temperature out our back door yesterday morning at 8am MST: -45C (-55C windchill).
I have lived in Alberta since I was 10, in 1967. I have never seen temperatures go this low in Central Alberta -- Edmonton to Calgary corridor. These temperatures are just one more confirmation of the GSM taking hold of the planet. ... When the sun’s protective energy radiating around us gets to its lowest rate, God only knows what the cosmic energy of the universe will have upon the planet. …
The -45C and wind building that low to -55C was so cold it is difficult to describe. I held the metal door handle on the inside of the screen door for more than 5 seconds and received a cold-burn to my fingers and hand. The cold air seeps instantly through any clothing. Opening the door of the Ford Excursion feels like it will crumbled in my hands. Sitting on the seat is like sitting up high upon a mountain rock. Turning the key, even though plugged in with full charge on two 880 amp batteries, gives me a…Wau…Wau…Wau.
This is surreal. It is exactly like the Arctic stories when those up there said, “we can never shut the vehicles off…otherwise they will never start”. That is what it was like here, the past week. And this is just Year #3 of the GSM.

Weather patterns in Canada have brought both record-breaking heat and cold.
Recently, Western Canada has experienced significant June snowfall and record cold while Eastern Canada has faced an early taste of summer. Last Wednesday alone, Alberta set 13 new record low temperatures, with Hendrickson Creek dropping to -2.7C (27.1F). Simultaneously, heat records were slain in Ontario, Quebec, and the Atlantic provinces.
Ken Dosanjh, a meteorologist at Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), noted that while fluctuations in atmospheric circulation are normal, the recent extremes are unusual. Kerri Lang, a warning preparedness meteorologist for ECCC, echoed Dosanjh, saying the current situation is distinguished by the intensity of these extremes, which are breaking all-time records.
A key factor in these weather patterns is the jet stream, which separates colder air to the north from warmer air to the south.
Typically, it flows west to east in a relatively straight line. However, scientists, as reported by mainstream outlets such as cbc.ca even, say the jet stream has become less stable and more wavy, contributing to the recent weather extremes.
As the jet stream dips across Canada, it is causing heat in the east (below the jet stream) and cold in the west (above it).

Lacombe County residents reported tennis ball-sized hail during Wednesday evening's storm that prompted a tornado warning from Environment and Climate Change Canada.
Originally, a watch was issued for much of Central Alberta at about 2:30 p.m., because atmospheric conditions area were favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce tornadoes.
Around 7:15 p.m., a tornado warning was issued for North Central and South Central Alberta, with "extra care and attention should be exercised in and around the following localities: Clive, Alix, Eckville and Lacombe."

A fast-moving wildfire in the Canadian Rockies that had prompted 25,000 people to flee has roared into the near-deserted town of Jasper with flames higher than treetops, devastating up to half of its structures, officials confirmed.
There were no immediate reports of injuries, following a mass evacuation of the picturesque resort and a neighbouring national park earlier in the week, but Jasper Mayor Richard Ireland said in a letter on the town's website that the wildfire "ravaged our beloved community."
"The destruction and loss that many you are facing and feeling is beyond description and comprehension, my deepest sympathies go out to each of you," he said.
Danielle Smith, the premier of Alberta province, said from 30 per cent to 50 per cent of the town's structures are potentially damaged or destroyed, saying "that's going to be a significant rebuild and significant displacement."

Great chaos ensued in the Canadian province of Alberta and at Calgary Airport. A strong hailstorm significantly damaged the terminal building. Tourists claimed that the hail was the size of cricket balls.
The process of cleaning and estimating the damages from the hailstorm, which came with strong gusts of wind, is currently underway in the northern part of Calgary, in the province of Alberta. Meteorologists are still tracking the storm cell. Warnings of dangerous precipitation are still in effect in some regions.
We were pretty scared. Normally, I don't get scared during storms, but even I found myself a little bit like, 'oh, don't stand too close to the windows, said Netanya Winterburn, a resident of the Sage Hill district, as quoted by CBC News.

As October begins, a blast of wintery weather is sweeping Canada, with frost and snow already hitting several provinces.
The Prairies, including Alberta and Saskatchewan, woke up to frost Tuesday morning.
Likewise in Eastern Canada, parts of Quebec and New Brunswick are bracing for freezing conditions by Tuesday night.
Northern British Columbia faces a heavy snowfall warning, with 10 cm (4 inches) forecast around Muncho Lake and Stone Mountain parks. This early season snow will is resulting from a cold air mass from Yukon colliding with a Pacific front.
Canadians should prepare for a frosty, snowy start to the season, is the general messaging.

An ice jam on the Matane River in Quebec's Gaspé Peninsula prompted flooding and the evacuation of dozens of homes and businesses in the city of Matane on Thursday.
Blocks of jagged ice and logs could be seen filling the entire river surface and spilling onto nearby properties in the city's downtown. Emergency services and provincial police were called to the area before 9 a.m. as the river was getting higher. Soon after that, ice began to cover large swaths, stilling the flow and prompting the evacuation order.
Residents were asked to vacate 84 buildings in the city of about 14,000 people. A disaster services centre was

A wildfire in the Flin Flon, Man., area on Tuesday. Mostly firefighters were left behind after the city evacuated.
Wildfires across Western Canada have forced thousands of people from their homes, as dry, warm and windy temperatures intensified new flares Friday, causing Manitoba to ask for international help.
Manitoba and Saskatchewan are under provincewide states of emergency for the next month, while evacuations have also been ordered in large parts of Alberta and British Columbia.
There were more than 180 active wildfires across the country Friday evening, with 23 of those being new and at least 102 considered out of control. The situation this week has been so severe that Manitoba was forced to call upon the Canadian Armed Forces to rescue residents from several communities.
Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew on Friday requested more equipment and personnel from international jurisdictions, including helicopters from the United States and Colombia. The province has already been receiving firefighters from New Brunswick, Alberta, B.C. and Prince Edward Island.
"We are doing everything that we can to preserve life," Mr. Kinew told reporters in Winnipeg, where the vast majority of more than 17,000 evacuees are being housed in arenas and soccer fields converted into shelters.
"As we head into the weekend, please pray for rain. We haven't seen rain in the forecast yet."
Two more areas in Manitoba - around Bakers Narrows in the north and Bissett in the east - were ordered to evacuate Friday. Also in the northern region, Pimicikamak Cree Nation, Cross Lake, Norway House and Mathias Colomb First Nation in Pukatawagan are also vacating their properties this week.
Mr. Kinew said final evacuations in Flin Flon, Man., where roughly 5,000 people live, occurred Friday, with mostly firefighters left behind. That blaze began Monday just across the provincial border in the Saskatchewan town of Creighton.
Keith Selma left all of his belongings behind in Flin Flon, save for some books, juice, the clothes he wore and a few extra shirts.
"You just have no idea how exhausting this is," he said by phone Friday from his uncle's home in Portage la Prairie near Winnipeg, where he'd flown with his cat and dog.
"I would never wish this kind of stress on anyone. All I can think about, dream about really, is that orange-red sky."
Jackie Castel was among more than 2,300 people from Mathias Colomb who fled her home. After flying roughly 700 kilometres to Winnipeg on a military plane with her daughter and son, she breathed a sigh of relief Friday afternoon outside a Best Western hotel.
"My body is trying to getting used to the air here, so much better than back home," she said, where the smoke became so thick "you could taste it in your mouth."
Ms. Castel was able to leave, but Mathias Colomb Chief Gordie Bear said many others in the remote community are still stranded.
"The helicopters are too slow and too small," he said. "Every hour we wait puts lives at risk. We need more help, especially from the military."
There are 25 active wildfires in Manitoba, with 106 in total this year. Before this week, the 20-year average for the region was 78 annual fires.
In Saskatchewan, 15 fires burned Friday, seven of which were uncontained. The province has recorded 207 wildfires this year - well over its five-year annual average of 125.
Premier Scott Moe has ordered evacuations for the communities around Pelican Narrows, Hall Lake, Brabant Lake, Canoe Lake, Lower Fishing Lake, Piprell Lake, East Trout Lake, Little Bear Lake, Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation and Whiteswan Bay. Other areas have also been told to be ready to flee at a moment's notice this weekend.
In Prince Albert, Sask., Weldon McCallum recalls consoling his young daughter as flames nearly destroyed his home in the city's north end.
"It's pretty hard to contain myself from crying with her, but I keep telling my daughter and my family not to lose hope."
Mr. McCallum, who is helping co-ordinate Saskatchewan's evacuation efforts for Peter Ballantyne, is pleading for more help.
"We need support in terms of fire protection," he said. "I'm really praying that we can get more."
Alexandria Jones at the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre said wildfires have been moving faster and spreading quicker this year.
"They're just more severe all around," she said.
The leading cause of wildfires is human activity, she added.
In B.C., 60 wildfires were burning Friday, with more than half out of control - mostly in the northeast. One fire in the Peace River Regional District quadrupled in size within a single day, as rural communities in the region bordering Alberta evacuated.
Air-quality alerts warning about smoke were issued in most of Alberta. The province was contending with at least 50 active fires Friday, including 29 deemed out of control. Evacuations are taking place near Chipewyan Lake, Red Earth Creek, Loon Lake, Peerless Lake and Trout Lake.
Non-essential workers at the Christina Lake facility, about 150 kilometres south of Fort McMurray, have also been told to leave the oil-production site by MEG Energy.

After approaching 30C (86F), parts of the Yukon are now bracing for snow and sub-zero wind chills.
Old Crow hit 29.7C (85.5F) on Sunday. By Tuesday night, the same region faced freezing temperatures, icy winds, and snow.
Temperatures crashed to 0C (32F), with wind chills as low as -10C (14F). Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) scrapped the weekend’s heat warnings and issued a special weather statement as frigid air barreled in from the Beaufort Sea.
The Arctic front delivered July snow not just to northern Yukon, but also to parts of the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and Alaska.

More than 700 active wildfires burning across Canada and about two-thirds are currently out-of-control
Billowing smoke from hundreds of out-of-control wildfires - most of which are in the Canadian Prairies - have caused severe air quality alerts across Canada and the United States.
Detroit, Michigan, and the Canadian cities of Montreal and Toronto, recorded some of the worst air quality in the world on Monday, according to a ranking by IQAir, a Swiss air quality technology company.
More than 700 active wildfires are currently burning across Canada and about two-thirds of them are now out-of-control, according to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC), a non-profit organization that is owned by government agencies.
One brush fire, in British Columbia, was reportedly caused when an osprey dropped a fish on to a power line, sparking a small blaze which was later extinguished.
But most of the current fires that are causing the poor, smoggy air quality and reduced visibility are connected to warmer-than-average temperatures, drought conditions, decreased levels of snowpack and low soil moisture, according to Natural Resources Canada.

The likes of Nunavut are continuing their early-season plunges.
On September 14, Isachsen (78.5N) logged -14.8C (5F) — a very cold reading for mid-Sept. While further north, at Svartevaeg/Cape Stallworthy (81.2N), thermometers dipped to -12.3C (10F).
The sun is beginning to drop below the horizon in the High Arctic, and winter is setting in early

The season’s first widespread freeze swept through Alberta over the weekend.
Mountain Park registered an icy -12.5C (9.5F), while Duck Lake dipped to -11.5C (11.3F), Abee -10.8C (12.6F), and Job Creek -10.2C (13.6F). Even Pika Run, Willow Creek, and Scalp Creek all touched -10C (14F).
Farther south and east, the chill extended into the cities. Edmonton International bottomed at -7.7C (18F), Edmonton-Blatchford -2.9C (26.8F), and Calgary International -3.3C (26F).

Following yesterday’s round of record-breaking lows across western Canada, the cold continued through Oct 15.
Between Monday and Wednesday, British Columbia alone has now logged more than 30 new daily minimum temperature records, deepening what is shaping up to be one of the most widespread early-season cold outbreaks in provincial history.
Among the most dramatic plunges are Merritt’s -9.8C (14.4F), which breaks the previous Oct 15 record of -6.7C (19.9F) set in 1938; Clinton’s -8.4C (16.9F) (old record -5.6C / 21.9F, from 1976); and Golden’s -7.5C (18.5F) (old mark -7.2C / 19F, set back in 1931).
-
The most brutal cold struck Alberta, where Thanksgiving Day (Oct 13) delivered historic lows.
Red Deer plunged to -12.7C (9.1F), making for the coldest Thanksgiving reading ever recorded in books dating back to 1904.
Hendrickson Creek tanked to -21.8C (-7.2F), smashing its previous record of -18.5C (-1.3F) from 2017.
Other parts of Alberta saw long-standing records fall:
Edson: -12.4C (9.7F), breaking -10.7C (12.7F) set in 1992.
Jasper: -9.9C (14.2F), breaking -8.3C (17.1F) from 1930.
Drumheller: -9.3C (15.3F), breaking -8.3C (17.1F) set in 1969.
Beaverlodge: -9.1C (15.6F), breaking -8.2C (17.2F) set in 2009.
Brooks: -8.6C (16.5F), breaking -7.8C (18F) set in 1969.

Wind-chill projections show stretches of Canada headed for insane levels of cold, with almost the entire nation holding below -10F (-23C).
Season-low temperatures are already piling up: Yukon’s Dempster hit -46.5C (-51.7F) on December 8; Fort Good Hope in the Northwest Territories reached -44.7C (-48.5F); and Norman Wells, Dawson City, Old Crow, and Mayo all sitting below -40C (-40F).
Consistent cold air is queued for the coming weeks:
This is the kind of deep Arctic reservoir that, once established, tends to spill south.
And sure enough, the Northeast U.S. has flipped into mid-winter. Temperatures on Dec 9 are due to dip 25F to 35F below normal, with widespread single digits (F) across New England and interior New York — exceptional cold for this early in the season.
What’s missing is the snow. The big cities have struggled so far — the storm track is there, the cold is there, but the pieces haven’t phased together yet. This is the pattern for much of the Northern Hemisphere in fact — very cold, but limited snow.

Yukon was plunged into true mid-winter cold on December 9.
Tuesday’s readings were anomalous, to say the least, with Braeburn hitting -49.2C (-56.6F) at 1 pm — the coldest temperature recorded this early in the season since 1995, when -53C (-63.4F) was logged on Dec 4.
A widespread corridor of -44C to -47C (-47F to -52F) stretched across the territory.
Other Yukon minimums stood as follows: -47.1C (-52.8F) at Beaver Creek (Airport), -46.8C (-52.2F) at Mayo, -45.8C (-50.4F) at Beaver Creek (Town), -45.7C (-50.3F) at both Antimony Creek and Burwash, -45.4C (-49.7F) at Champagne, -44.6C (-48.3F) at Faro, -44.3C (-47.7F) at Willow Creek, -44.1C (-47.4F) at Klondike FC, and -44C (-47.2F) at Dawson.
The broader pattern across the high latitudes remains unchanged: intensifying cold over Alaska and western Canada, repeatedly reloading and pressing south. North America’s winter engine is running, and additional powerful Arctic deliveries are lining up.
This deep reservoir of Arctic air over Alaska and western Canada is primed to spill into the Lower 48, with the first major push arriving this weekend. Widespread anomalies of 20F to 30F below average are expected from the Midwest through the Mid-Atlantic.
Daytime highs for the likes of Chicago and Minneapolis will struggle to escape the single digits (F), with overnight lows dangerously cold as the core slides east and south.

Braeburn crashed to a low of -53C (-63.4F) on Wednesday, Yukon’s coldest December temperature in more than 40 years.
You have to go back to 1984, when Watson Lake hit -53.3C, to find a lower December reading.
The wider region is deep in the same Arctic reservoir.
Beaver Creek, Champagne, Faro, Mayo, Nursery, and Tuchitua have all posted lows between -47C and -49C (-52.6F to -56.2F). Whitehorse has fallen to -40C (-40F), its earliest -40C since 2006 and, excluding that outlier year, since 1995.
This is exceptional early-season cold, even by Yukon standards.
A pool this cold, this entrenched, rarely stays put. The pattern is primed to drive further outbreaks south as winter tightens.

Fort St. John, British Columbia is digging out from a brutal, record-setting start to winter.
More than 67 cm (26.4 inches) of snow has fallen over northeastern B.C. since the beginning of December, nearly triple the region’s monthly average of 26.8 cm (10.6 inches), according to Environment Canada. Daily snowfall records were broken on Dec 10 and Dec 13.
Pacific moisture overrunning the Rockies has been colliding with a firmly entrenched Arctic air mass.
Fort St. John has endured consecutive days of snowfall with no reset, overwhelming clearing capacity and forcing crews into overtime while private contractors are brought in to cope.
The cold is now tightening its grip. Temperatures are expected to plunge below -30C (-22F), with equipment performance and clearing progress increasingly strained in -30C to -40C (-22F to -40F) conditions.
Looking south, while much of the U.S. appears on course for a milder Christmas period, the likes of the Sierra Nevada are set for a snowy pounding. NOAA Blend of Models shows the range receiving a solid 6-12+ feet of snow through Christmas week:

Winter still has Canada in a chokehold.
Rivière aux Feuilles, Nunavik, Quebec plunged to -43.3C (-45.9F) on March 30 — an extreme late-season low and around 25C below average. Two days before April, that’s just 3.3C shy of Quebec’s all-time April record.
This isn’t isolated. Much of Canada has run well below normal through March.
And the pattern is locked in.
Persistent troughing over Canada is anchoring Arctic air in place, while ridging dominates large parts of the United States. A positive Arctic Oscillation is effectively corralling the cold into the high latitudes — with Canada at the center.
Forecasts show little change into April.
Below-normal temperatures are set to persist across the country.
Spring may be underway on the calendar. But across Canada (and Alaska and much of Greenland and central Siberia), winter hasn’t left
-
Canada is still posting sub -40C lows.
Schefferville, Quebec has set a new April provincial cold record, plunging to -40.4C (-40.7F) — breaking the previous mark of -40C (-40F) set in 1994 at Bonnard (records in Quebec extend back to the late 1800s).
Nearby, Rivière aux Feuilles set a new April record of -39.8C (-39.6F).
Kuujjuarapik tanked to -36.2C (-33.2F), smashing its previous April low of -33.9C (-29F), set in 1950 and 1970.
Further east, Wabush Lake in Labrador hit -35.3C (-31.5F) — just shy of both its monthly and provincial April records.
This is not a one-off event. It follows an exceptionally cold March across northern Canada.
Large parts of the territories, Ontario, Quebec, and Labrador experienced their coldest month of the season. Stations such as Rankin Inlet (since 1953), Churchill (since 1929), and Wabush (since 1960) averaged record cold months of March.

Mid-April, and Canada is still locked in a harsh winter pattern.
The tropospheric polar vortex remains intact and operating at mid-winter strength.
Instead of weakening into spring, it is holding a tight circulation over Hudson Bay, keeping the region frozen and continuing to drive Arctic air south.
Forecasts over the next 10 days show repeated cold surges into central and eastern Canada, with the pattern staying stable rather than breaking down.

Daytime highs near 30 degrees Celsius.
Humidex values near 36.

Continuing today. Ending tonight.
Additional Information:

Take action to protect yourself and others – extreme heat can affect everyone’s health. Determine if you or others around you are at greater risk of heat illness. Check on older adults, those living alone and other at-risk people in-person or on the phone multiple times a day.
Watch for the early signs of heat exhaustion in yourself and others. Signs may include headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst, dark urine and intense fatigue. Stop your activity and drink water.
Heat stroke is a medical emergency! Call 9-1-1 or your emergency health provider if you, or someone around you, is showing signs of heat stroke which can include red and hot skin, dizziness, nausea, confusion and change in consciousness. While you wait for medical attention, try to cool the person by moving them to a cool place, removing extra clothing, applying cold water or ice packs around the body.
Drink water often and before you feel thirsty to replace fluids.
Close blinds, or shades and open windows if outside is cooler than inside.
Turn on air conditioning, use a fan, or move to a cooler area of your living space. If your living space is hot, move to a cool public space such as a cooling centre, community centre, library or shaded park.
Follow the advice of your region’s public health authority.
Plan and schedule outdoor activities during the coolest parts of the day.
Limit direct exposure to the sun and heat. Wear lightweight, light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing and a wide-brimmed hat.
Never leave people, especially children, or pets inside a parked vehicle. Check the vehicle before locking to make sure no one is left behind.

Canada’s long Victoria Day weekend has been cold.
In Alberta, fresh snow blanketed Canmore and the Bow Valley, with nearby mountain zones seeing a foot:
On the Prairies, Saskatoon‘s preliminary May 17 daily-high came in around 3C (37F). If the observation verifies, the city will have at least challenged, or possibly beaten, its 108-year-old low-max reading.
Regina also turned white, with high temps struggling to 3C to 4C (37F to 39F) — 15C below normal.
