Title: Weather in Europe 2021 - up
Post by: Mark on September 28, 2021, 06:42:07 PM
RECORD-BREAKING COLD SWEEPS EUROPE
Winter-like lows have been sweeping across Europe of late, and have frozen migrants to death on the Poland-Belarus border, in the month of September!

Recent nights have seen the mercury plunge to record-breaking levels across European nations.

Eastern Europe has been seeing sub-freezing lows — for example, Berovo in North Macedonia (2,700ft) suffered -1.8C (28.7F).

While in the southeast, unprecedented September lows of -1C (30.2F) and +1C (33.8F) have been logged in Greece, at Florina (2,132ft) and Kastoria (2,165ft), respectively.

Snow is also rolling in early.

Turkey’s Mount Erciyes, for example, registered rare September flurries over the weekend:

Title: BLIZZARDS BATTER THE EUROPEAN ALPS,
Post by: Mark on November 08, 2021, 05:51:03 PM
Heavy, early-season snow arrived Tuesday evening in the Italian ski resort of Livigno, and it hasn’t let up.

Totals of approximately 2 meters (6.6 feet) have accumulated on the peaks of “Little Tibet”, with the latest weather models suggesting further historic early-November dumpings are on the way.

Below are clips of the wintry scenes in and around the Livigno and Lombardy regions of Italy on Wednesday, November 3 (video courtesy Dangerous Planet), where heavy snowfall paralyzed traffic and resulted in more than 100 snow-clearing operations:

Title: France on course for driest July on record
Post by: Mark on July 31, 2022, 09:01:18 PM
"The month of July will very likely be the driest July ever recorded since 1959," spokesman Christian Veil from Meteo-France told AFP.

On average, just eight mm (0.3 inches) of rain fell across the country from July 1-25, less than the previous low of 16 mm which was clocked in 2020, he said.

"We're in a very difficult situation even though we're only at the end of July," he said, saying soil humidity was at record lows and many trees were losing their leaves prematurely.

Farmers across the country are reporting difficulties in feeding livestock because of parched grasslands, while irrigation has been banned in large areas of northwest and southeast France due to water shortages.

The flow of the river Loire for example, which empties into the Atlantic in northwest France, has fallen by a quarter since the start of July.

On the eastern river Rhine, which forms the France-Germany border, commercial boats are having to run at a third of their carrying capacity in order to avoid hitting the bottom because the water level is so low.

A total of 90 out of 96 administrative regions in mainland France have water restrictions of some sort, a record number, according to the environment ministry.

Title: Intense European heatwave parches Loire Valley, France's 'garden'
Post by: Mark on August 12, 2022, 07:08:38 PM
The Loire Valley is known as "the Garden of France". But the garden is withering.

France's worst drought since records began has turned lush vegetation into arid fields of brown crops, shrivelling under what is now the fourth heatwave of the year.

In Vincent Favreau's vegetable farm, where he produces food for a hundred families in the area, the parched earth has stunted the growth of the cabbages. His potato plants are burnt out, producing just half the crop of a normal year.

"Either the vegetables will die of thirst, or they won't develop enough during this crucial period of growth," he said, sifting through the dry soil, which he hasn't been able to water since restrictions came in two weeks ago.

"With this heat and wind, we can't compensate for what the sun is evaporating. I've never seen something like this in my twenty-two years here. If it doesn't rain within two months, it'll be a disaster."

The world is already suffering from a food crisis from the war in Ukraine, a global breadbasket. Now, other major food producers, like France, are showing worrying signs.

Its corn production is forecast to drop by some 18% this year, with wheat and animal feed also falling.

Title: Europe record-breaking bout of late-summer chills
Post by: Mark on September 25, 2022, 09:28:04 AM
Europe is contending with a record-breaking bout of late-summer chills — a freeze that the bought-out legacy media couldn’t give two hoots about (quelle surprise!).

September frosts swept the plains of Central France over the weekend — ground frosts as well as air frosts (below 2m).

Monthly low temperature records have been set, including at Brest, although many of these new benchmarks won’t officially stand due to a change of location at the stations.

Below are four of the minimum temperatures logged Sunday morning in the French plains, courtesy of @lachainemeteo. “The entire north of the country is affected by cold/frosts“, reads the tweet:

Title: MONTE ROSA, ITALY REGISTERS EARLIEST SUB -20C (-4F) EVER
Post by: Mark on September 25, 2022, 09:31:40 AM
Europe’s well-documented summer of toasty African plumes seems a distant memory as many nations now find themselves ‘above’ an increasingly weak and wavy ‘meridional‘ jet stream flow and therefor subject to frosty Arctic outbreaks.

A pair of low temperature records were recently busted at Capanna Margherita in Monte Rosa, Italy –adding to the many that fell across Italy and France over the weekend, as reported here— a weather station that was opened way back in 1899.

The mercury plunged to -21.2C (-6.2F) during the morning of Sept 17, which busted both the coldest-ever temp for the day (the -19.7C (-3.5F) set in 2013) and the date for the earliest sub -20C (-4F) in history, by a full week no less (Sept 24, 2004).

Brutal Arctic air is readying to invade much of the European continent.

Record lows and historic snows are potentially on the cards as a ‘blocking high’ above Greenland threatens to set up a truly baltic-looking festive season, particularly for Northern, Western and Central nations — starting this week:
Title: POLAR PLUNGE TO GRIP EUROPE
Post by: Mark on March 27, 2023, 07:15:30 AM
The heaviest snows will arrive in line with a late-March polar plunge, due to bring temperature anomalous of as much as -16C below the seasonal norm to Sweden and Norway, for example:

GFS 2m Temperature Anomalies (C) March 27 – 28 [tropicaltidbits.com].

While speculating further ahead, the British tabloids are getting excited about new long-term weather models that predict “a record cold Easter” this year, prompting bookmakers to slash their odds on Easter being the chillest ever.

This remains to be seen, and if you know the UK tabloid rhetoric, it usually proves complete and utter bollocks. But still, “weather warnings across the UK suggest we’re already well on course for a record-breaking cold Easter,” so says Alex Apati of Ladbrokes, and Met Office reports do show the vast majority of the country being hit by an extreme cold spell come April 9.

Temperatures as low was -8C (17.6F) are scheduled to hit the Scottish Highlands, once again — record lows for the time of year.

Title: WINTER RETURNS TO EUROPE
Post by: Mark on April 08, 2023, 07:02:22 PM
A harsh wintry outbreak is gripping Europe this week, bringing harsh frosts and heavy April snowfall.

Temperatures across the likes of France have plummeted below freezing; practically all of the country has been affected, even the Mediterranean.

The dramatic shift in conditions, ‘the return to winter’, will bring widespread losses to France’s agricultural sectors. Optimistic estimates, made by agro-climatologist Serge Zaka, call for 30% of blooming fruit trees to be destroyed.

The anomalous warmth that hit at the end of March coupled with this week’s hard freeze is making it difficult for crops to grow stably, with the erratic shifts in temperature and environment resulting in stunted growth: swing between extremes.

Temperatures touching -7C (19.4F) swept many French regions overnight Tuesday, with the majority of thermometers reading below 0C (32F). Daytime temperatures will rise in the warming April sun, but it will still hold far-colder than the seasonal norm.

Likewise in Germany and Italy, clear skies are seeing temperatures plummet even further, with damaging frosts hitting here, too.

This late-season freeze recalls memories of the past two years when cold records were slain across Central Europe. ‘Frost fires’ (aka ‘crop candles’) became a regular feature on the continent during the Aprils of 2021 and 2022, with said fires capable of increasing the surrounding temperatures by as much as 3C–but at a cost: €2,000-€3,000 per hectare.

Title: APRIL COLD RECORDS SLAIN ACROSS EUROPE
Post by: Mark on April 08, 2023, 07:12:33 PM
Europe’s return to winter is biting hard.

For the fourth year in a row now, harsh April frosts have been tearing across the continent’s growing regions.

Taking Spain, a string of low temperature records for the month were taken out Wednesday, including the -4.5C (23.9F) Vitoria and the exceptional -6.6C (20.1F) in Burgos – never before has Spain been so cold in April.

The low elevations of Poland were also shivering, posting a low of -7C (19.4F); Italy saw -4.9C (23.3F); France, too, felled long-standing records; while in Austria, all–that’s 100%–of the country’s stations fell below 0C (32F) on Wednesday — the first time that’s happened in April since 2003.

Incredibly, meteorologists are calling for colder temperatures today (Thursday). And looking further ahead--admittedly into the unreliable time frame–latest GFS runs foresee a potentially disruptive Arctic Outbreak descending into the continent April 19, which, if it were to play out, would cause untold headaches for Europe’s farmers, and the lighting of many a ‘frost fire’.

Title: RECORD COLD EUROPE
Post by: Mark on June 16, 2023, 07:49:15 PM
RECORD COLD EUROPE
Northern and Eastern Europe’s cold is persisting, intensifying in some spots.

Frosts have been commonplace this month, with record low temperatures hitting many nations.

Over the weekend, Estonia set a new record low for the month of June. The -1.5C (29.3F) posted Sunday morning at the city of Narva comfortably bested the previous coldest-ever June reading of -0.9C set in 1982.

Daily cold records have also swept the country of late, as a pool of Arctic air refuses to abate.

This part of the world is coming off a cool May, and all.

May in Slovakia was a colder-than-average month, with averages of -1.1C below the norm logged in parts.

May in the Czech Republic was similarly chilly, closing with an average temperature of 12.6C (54.7F), which is 0.5C below the multidecadal average.

June’s chill has impacted many northern and eastern European nations, including Finland, Latvia and Russia.

Title: EUROPE’S COLDER-THAN-AVERAGE (AND SNOWY) JULY
Post by: Mark on August 12, 2023, 08:18:23 PM
The summer of 2023 is holding cool for the majority of Europe, and the data prove it.

Temperature readings for July are in, and they show a colder-than-average month for many nations.

Including…

Estonia, with its average temperature of 16.6C (61.9F), which is 1.2C below the multidecadal norm.

[Estonia Meteorological Service]

Latvia, too, posted a similar average — 16.8C (62.2F), which is a full 1C below the average.

[Latvia Meteorological Service]

July 2023 in Lithuania finished with an average temperature of 17.6C (63.7F), which is 0.7C below normal.

[Lithuania Meteorological Service]

Denmark closed July with an average temperature of 15.9C (60.6F), which again is a full 1C below the multidecadal average. Also, with precipitation at 140.8mm (5.54 inches) it was the country’s wettest July on record (average is 60.9mm/2.4 inches):

[Rainfall totals, DMI]

July in Iceland was very cold, particularly in the NE where anomalies of -2C were posted.

[Icelandic Met Office]

Finland also held cool last month, logging anomalies of between -0.3C to -1.9C across the country.

[Finnish Meteorological Service]

And finally–but by no means comprehensively–Sweden registered an anomaly of approx. -1C below the multidecadal norm.

[SMHI]

Ignoring the MSM’s cherry-picked warm-mongering, Europe, on the whole and thus far, has suffered an anomalously-cool summer — one now persisting into August, and all:

GFS 2m Temperature Anomalies (C) Aug 1 – Aug 8 [tropicaltidbits.com].

Latest GFS runs are also calling for accumulating summer snow over the continent’s higher elevations, such as the Alps, Scandinavia and Iceland, totals that are set to rival the heavy–yet unreported–totals from last week:

Title: NTENSE SNOW” CONTINUES TO POUND ITALY AND SPAIN
Post by: Mark on August 12, 2023, 08:27:07 PM
All of this anomalous cold has resulted in heavy summer snow accumulating across the continent’s higher elevations, which has been the case for weeks now.

Additional dumpings pounded the likes of Italy and Spain over the weekend just gone, “an atypical phenomenon,” so reports Italian news outlet leggo.it.

“The abrupt drop in temperatures,” Leggo continues, “brought heavy snow to the Dolomites. This morning, Saturday 5 August, the completely whitewashed peak of the Civetta is clearly visible from the Val di Zoldo. An intense snowfall that has led many to think, ‘are we on August 5th or December 5th?'”.

Carlo Budel, manager of the Capanna di Punta Penia–situated on the NE Italian mountain of Marmolada–posted proof of the rare summer snow on Facebook (shown below).

Title: HISTORICALLY COLD ITALY
Post by: Mark on August 12, 2023, 08:44:44 PM
Much of the European continent continues to endure anomalous and record-breaking summer chills. Today we’ll focus on Italy—an MSM favorite earlier in the season when the country experienced a short-lived heatwave.

For the past few weeks the mercury has held well-below average across Italy, with rare and heavy summer snow accumulating over the nation’s higher elevations, including the Dolomites.

Yesterday (Aug 8), a string of monthly low temperature records fell across the country, including in Sardinia.

Here, a new summer low of 14.2C (57.6F) was posted at Capo Frasca, with historic and near-freezing readings observed at the island’s interior, such as the 0.9C (33.6F) at Ilorai, 1.8C (35.2F) at Gavoi and 2.7C (36.9F) at Villanova — all new August lows.

The mountainous snows are also persisting:

Title: Torrential summer rain and flooding hits Austria for the 2nd time in August
Post by: Mark on August 30, 2023, 08:47:01 PM
Just a few weeks after heavy rain caused devastating floods in the southern Austrian provinces of Carinthia and Styria, extreme weather is causing major problems once again.

Experts at Geosphere Austria (formerly the ZAMG) issued a rain and thunderstorm warning for several regions across the country on Monday.

In a tweet they said "large amounts of rain" was forecast in the west and south until Tuesday, and warned that "more mudslides and floods" are to be expected.

The regions of Vorarlberg and Tyrol were most affected.

In Tyrol, the districts of Imst, and the Ötztal valley, as well as the district of Innsbruck-Land were mainly affected around Monday lunchtime due to flooding. According to Geosphere, the situation on the main ridge of the Alps remained precarious in the afternoon, and possible thunderstorms could exacerbate the situation.

Title: EUROPE’S BEST START TO A SKI SEASON IN MEMORY
Post by: Mark on November 19, 2023, 09:19:31 AM

Recently, ski resorts from the French Alps right the way down to the Italian Dolomites have been reporting more than 3 feet of fresh powder, resulting in a historically-early start to the the European ski season.

Absurd notions that Europe’s favorite winter pastime is a thing of the past have taken a hit after temperatures across the region fell off a cliff in November, back to “a crisp 1990s sort of climate,” reports goodnewsnetwork.org.

In many parts parts of the Alps, snow totals have actually exceeded 6 feet which has led big-name resorts in France, Switzerland, Italy, and Austria bringing their opening dates of the 2023-24 season forward by at least a week, to November 18.

Resorts such as Tignes and Val Thorens in France, Passo del Tonale, Temu, and Madonna di Campiglio in Italy, Kitzbühel in Austria, and Davos, Zermatt, and Verbier in Switzerland are all opening early–with the latter opening three weeks early.

“Storms have been piling into the Alps for the last two weeks, with snow accumulations of more than 1 meter [3.3ft] quite widespread now on the upper slopes,” said Ian McIlrath, managing director of Ski Solutions holiday company.

“This will ensure a solid base for the winter ahead, and with a lot more snow in the forecast, it’s shaping up to be one of the best starts to the winter ski season that I can remember.”

Indeed, looking ahead, Europe is due another absolute pounding — from Scandinavia, through the Alps, to the Balkans:

Title: Europe in the Grip of Historic Winters: Record Snowfall and Extreme Cold
Post by: Mark on January 10, 2024, 07:47:23 PM
As the winter season of 2023-2024 takes hold, Europe finds itself in the grip of a severe cold snap. Record-breaking snowfalls and extreme cold temperatures are impacting various regions, from Germany to Russia. Munich, a city known for its picturesque winters, recently experienced a historic snowstorm, delivering an unprecedented 17 inches of snow. This figure marks the city’s largest snowfall since March 2006 and sets a new record for December.

Snowfall Warnings Issues Across Europe
The beginning of March is looking set to be a snowy one for much of Europe.

From Scandinavia through the UK over the Alps and well into Spain, heavy snowfall will be the early-spring theme:

GFS Total Snowfall (cm) March 1 - March 17 [tropicaltidbits.com]

As a result of the fresh accumulations, which are forecast to top 10 feet on the peaks, the avalanche danger will be high, particularly across the Alps' Western slopes, as well as over Italy's Apennines and Spain's Pyrenees.

Meteorologist Edoardo Ferrara has said: "In Piedmont and Aosta Valley [in the Alps] up to 1 meter [3.3 feet] of further fresh snow is expected... By Sunday, the total accumulations on the Alps could exceed 3 meters [10 feet]."

Ferrara confirms the high avalanche danger, which he expects to run well-into next week. He speaks to a deadly avalanche that already struck Italy's South Tyrol on Wednesday, that claimed a life, and worries that this is just the beginning.

Title: Europe Breaks Historic Low Temperature Records
Post by: Mark on April 24, 2024, 06:36:24 PM
Europe has endured a violent swing between extremes this month.

"April 2024 will go down as one of the most incredible flips on record ... Summer to winter for some," so say the experts.

Following a spell of anomalous spring warmth, exceptional cold is now striking the likes of Italy where dozens of low temperature records have fallen (for the time of year).

Italians have been enduring some of the coldest daily highs in books dating back 100+ years, to 1873. And even at low elevations, Tmaxes have struggled to 7C (44.6F).

"Absolutely historic," writes @extremetemps on X.

In France, the southern city of Nice, with 4.4C (39.9F), has set it lowest late-April temperature since 1951. Technically that's true, but that 1951 reading was actually set at night. Monday's 4.4C occurred during the day which, according to researchers, "probably hasn't happened [in the French Riviera] since the Little Ice Age."

Similarly in Denmark's capital Copenhagen, a very cold day was endured there. "When the final numbers are in it may turn out to have been the second-coldest day in 250 years this late in the spring," writes local weather researcher Sebastian Pelt (certainly the coldest since 1941). Elsewhere, Jægersborg's 2.7C (36.9F) made for Denmark's lowest daily max this late since 1988.

Tryvannshøgda, Norway posted -4.4C (24.1F) overnight Monday, the lowest temperature so late in spring since 1973.

As well as one of the coldest late-April's on record, this will go down as one of Europe's snowiest, and all. Nations have gone from summer-like warmth to heavy late-season

Title: Summer Skiing In Europe After Record-Breaking Spring Snow
Post by: Mark on June 16, 2024, 08:54:38 AM
Alpine glaciers across Europe —from parts of Scandinavia, to the Pyrenees, and of course the Alps— have enjoyed another week of low temperatures and spring snow as ski areas commence their summer season openings.

Passo Stelvio, Italy, for example, is scheduled to open for summer skiing on June 1, but delays are expected due to its base hotels not having their access roads cleared owing to the late-season storms.

La Rosiere, France is also still busy clearing the way (below photo shot May 28):

This has been the theme across the Alps in recent months; that is, unprecedented spring dumpings, which are following, let's not forget, "Europe's best start to a ski season in memory" when record-breaking powder accumulated as early as October.

The Swiss Glacier Monitoring Network (GLAMOS) has been measuring snow depths on Swiss glaciers for decades.

Incorporating measurements from 14 different locations, the latest GLAMOS report shows a significant uptick in snow cover across Switzerland's glaciers since the beginning of April, with heavy snow falling and totals soaring.

"Something special has happened in recent months," writes Brian Rodriguez for aviationanalysis.net. "So much snow has fallen that amounts are now at record levels."

Indeed, the snowfall on such glaciers as Ticino and Engadine has been "remarkable," Rodriguez continues, with new records set there. A host of other glaciers have also set records, a number in western Switzerland and also on the northern hills of the Alps.

On average, the snow is currently 3 to 6 meters (10 to 20 ft) deeper compared to the same period last year. And compared to 2011-2020 norms, GLAMOS data reveals a snow surplus of between 12% and 60% across the 14 glaciers (the average being 31%).

Looking ahead, similarly cold and snowy conditions are forecast over the Alps in the coming week, as the calendar flips to June.

Taking a world view...
Recently, a late spring snowstorm was noted in the northern Rockies. Also, given the impressive end to the season across the Western US more broadly, Arizona’s Snowbowl has announced it will remain open into June for the first time in its history (1938).

While eyeing the Southern Hemisphere, further big snowfalls totaling more than a meter (40 inches) have hit the South American Andes. Chile has just opened its fourth ski area of the season as winter continues its transition from the NH to the SH.

South America's snow area extent has impressed in recent weeks, taking a monster (record-setting) step up:

Northern Hemisphere mass is also faring well, currently holding above 1998-2011 norms:

https://electroverse.substack.com/p/europe-chills-it-was-a-cold-may-for
A depression over Benelux drove a cold front into France, causing rain and strengthening winds. Polar air is now following, leading to a significant temperature drop following the previous dip of June 6.

Following the disturbance, clear skies will allow temperatures to plummet to unusually low levels for mid-June across France.

Thermometers are widely dropping south of 5C (41F), with some areas such as Champagne, Normandy, and the Paris Basin expecting record-challenging June lows of 2C to 3C (36F to 37.4F).

Both Wednesday and Thursday mornings are forecast to remain very cold for the time of year. The strong June sun will moderate daytime temperatures, boosting the feels-like, but records are expected to fall, according to Météo-France.

The cold isn't just confined to France of course, the majority of Europe is 'blue':

England, for example, is on for a very cold month, one ranking among the top-15 coldest Junes in books dating back 365 years to 1659 (currently on par with June, 1907).

Title: Feet Of June Snow Hit Fonna, Norway As Europe Turns Blue
Post by: Mark on June 16, 2024, 09:19:46 AM
Winter has made a return not only to the European Alps, as reported yesterday, but also Scandinavia, specifically Norway.

Among the resorts benefiting is Fonna near Hardangerfjord, which has received more than 3 feet of snowfall in recent days, creating ideal conditions for summer skiing. As of June 12, the snow depth at Fonna stood at an impressive 650 cm (236 inches) at the base and 760 cm (299 inches) at the summit, making it one of the best seasons in recent memory.

Scandinavia is coming off the back of a historically cold winter and spring that set the stage for the exceptional snowpack we're seeing now.

In January, Karasjok, Norway saw thermometers drop to -42C (-43.6F), marking the country’s coldest reading in decades. Nikkaluokta, Sweden endured -37C (-34.6F) on January 8, setting a new record there. While Sodankylä, Finland experienced a record-setting -39C (-38.2F) on January 7.

Scandinavia's extreme freeze extend through February and March, and also into April — initially impressive, northern Europe’s cold quickly proved unprecedented.

Nikkaluokta dipped to -34.1C (-29.4F) on April 3, marking 1) a new monthly record at the station, pipping the previous record (of -34C (-29.2F) from 1955), and 2) a new national low for the month of April.

Neighboring Norway posted a record-stretch of April chills and all, with April 5 seeing Cuovddatmokki log a fifth-consecutive sub -25C (-13F) reading in a row, beating the previous record of four-consecutive sub -25Cs set during the Aprils of 1977 and 1971.

Following a warm-up for some this June —for parts of Norway even, which contrasting the situation at Fonna has led to Stryn Ski Resort announcing its season's close “due the recent cold/snow returning too late"— winter-like conditions are once again sweeping much of Europe.

The historic June chills currently gripping the likes of Britain and France are forecast to persist as the month continues, with 'blues' and 'purples' set to prevail even as the calendar nears July:

Title: Severe hailstorm hits central and northern Bulgaria
Post by: Mark on June 16, 2024, 09:26:36 AM
A severe hailstorm combined with torrential rain on Wednesday evening flooded streets and homes in central and northern Bulgaria, damaging agricultural crops and snapping trees. Among the most affected were the regions of Veliko Tarnovo, Gabrovo, Shumen, Lovech, Yambol and Sliven. The Interior Ministry said that a total of 41 reports of accidents were received at the Fire Safety and Protection units in the affected regions, with no injuries reported.

The hailstorm caused material damage to buildings and cars in Veliko Tarnovo and surrounding settlements. Mayor Daniel Panov reported numerous reports of fallen trees, cars hit by trees and damage to the roof of a school, which caused Thursday to be declared a non-school day at the affected school.

Title: Alerts issued across Europe as heatwave leaves many in lockdown
Post by: Mark on July 12, 2024, 07:23:07 AM
Story by Jovana Gec

Italian authorities declared a red weather alert in seven cities on Thursday, mostly in the central parts of the country but also the capital Rome and Trieste in the northeast. The heat conditions are aggravated by humidity and could affect healthy people as well as those with health conditions, authorities warned.
Similar warnings were issued in neighboring Croatia and further east and south. Croatia's main tourism resort, the southern Adriatic Sea town of Dubrovnik, recorded 28 degrees Celsius (82.4 Fahrenheit) at dawn, signalling there won't be relief when the sun goes down.

Forest fires have been reported this week in Albania, near the border with Greece, as well as in Bosnia and Italy.

Meteorologists said temperatures were even higher than officially reported in big cities where sizzling concrete radiates the heat above the ground and the asphalt softens under one's feet.

“It was impossible to breathe yesterday," said Antonela Spičanović, from the Montenegrin capital of Podgorica, where temperatures reached 39C (102F) on Wednesday. The city seemed deserted with many of its residents staying indoors or heading for the Adriatic Sea coast or the mountains.

Title: Unprecedented Summer Snowstorm Begins In The European Alps
Post by: Mark on September 15, 2024, 08:47:46 AM
A potentially record-smashing summer snowstorm has commenced in the European Alps, with a few models predicting as much as 5 feet of snow hitting the highest peaks this weekend.

Early-season snow has been hitting Europe's mountains for weeks, but now it's intensifying, spreading to relatively low elevations, and even impacting nations such as the Czech Republic. Here, the Czech's saw their first snow of season on Thursday, September 12, down to 1,000m (3,280ft). Velký Javor was blanketed by a thin layer, and while the flakes didn't last long, melting in the early-September warmth, local forecasts are calling for an intensification through Friday, Saturday, and also Sunday.

The Czech Republic's first snow came on October 8 last year; September 18 the year before — the typical range.

This latest Arctic front, which has already plunged temperatures in Germany from balmy highs of 25C (77F) to winter-like lows, is colliding with moisture from the Mediterranean, resulting in a rare and powerful September snow event.

So far, accumulations have topped 35 cm (13 inches) in Germany with the snowline dropping to as low as 800 meters (2,625 feet). But this is thought to be just the beginning. Even heavier summer snow is forecast for much of the Alps through the weekend, with some models predicting totals exceeding 2 meters (6.6 feet), breaking September records with feet to spare.

Title: Polish city urged to evacuate as floods batter central Europe
Post by: Mark on September 22, 2024, 09:05:17 AM
The mayor of a Polish city has asked all 44,000 residents to evacuate, as widespread flooding continues to batter central Europe.

Nysa mayor Kordian Kolbiarz asked people to head for higher ground, citing the risk of an embankment breaching and releasing a cascade of water into the town from a nearby lake.

The death toll from the floods that hit over the weekend rose to at least 16 on Monday, with seven confirmed fatalities in Romania. Casualties were also recorded in Austria, the Czech Republic and Poland.

Budapest said it would close roads near the river Danube which runs through the Hungarian capital, citing the risk of flooding later this week.

"Please evacuate your belongings, yourselves, your loved ones. It is worth getting to the top floor of the building immediately, because the wave may be several metres high. This means that the whole town will be flooded," Nysa Mayor Kolbiarz wrote.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said one billion zloty (£197m) would be allocated for flood victims in the country, adding that Poland would also apply for EU relief funds. His government has also declared a state of natural disaster.

Title: Unprecedented September snowstorm passes in the Alps - up to 2.5 meters (8 FEET)
Post by: Mark on September 22, 2024, 09:09:45 AM
It's the largest September snowfall in living memory in parts of the Alps. Most will melt but some won't, with some superb autumn conditions. People are already skiing, but there have been several avalanches with caution urged.

Some eastern parts of the Alps saw the the biggest September snowfalls in living memory.

At altitude there was over 2m in places, with snow down to 700m.

It has made a difference to the glacier ski areas in Austria that are already open and ones opening shortly.

"The higher parts of the central and eastern Austrian Alps (e.g. Dachstein glacier, Kitzsteinhorn glacier, Obertauern) have seen 1.5m to 2m of snow in the last few days, with perhaps close to 2.5m in some favoured spots like the Höhe Tauern, though in most cases this snow has been very wind-blown and therefore difficult to measure," said the alpine weather expert, Fraser Wilkin, from weathertoski.co.uk

Title: Siberia mid-October snow extent greater in 2024 than in past years. Could impact
Post by: Mark on October 20, 2024, 09:06:27 AM
There is news from this part of Russia that often goes through the roof in the media. Forest fires or unusual summer temperatures come to mind. If only we had a speed limit in Germany, or at least installed more wind turbines, then it wouldn't be so bad.

We have already recommended Ventusky several times here. The site visualizes weather data in an excellent way.

The snow cover can be displayed and there is interesting data from Siberia. The snow cover in mid-October 2024 is greater than it has been in recent years.

Ventusky himself believes it could have an impact on the winter weather in Europe because such large areas are already covered in snow. A line was drawn at the westernmost boundary in 2024, so you can see what the extent has been in recent years.

Title: Major floods in southeast France

Comment: Update October 18

Reuters reports:
Major floods in southeast France cause significant damage, power cuts

Massive floods caused serious damage and power outages on Friday in parts of France's mountainous southeast region after days of heavy rain, though there were no immediate reports of any casualties.

France's weather authority Météo France placed six departments south of the city of Lyon on a red flood alert on Thursday. The alert was downgraded to 'orange' on Friday, indicating that water levels would come down again.

"At certain places in the Ardèche region, up to 700 milimetres of water has fallen in 48 hours. That's more than a year's rainfall in Paris, so it's absolutely gigantic," Agnes Pannier-Runacher, the environment minister, told BFM TV.

French news stations showed cars, traffic signs and cattle being swept away by the floods. The A47 highway close to Lyon was temporarily transformed into a giant stream of water.

The French interior ministry said Paris had dispatched 1,500 additional firefighters to the affected areas.

Title: Early Winter Hits Northern Europe
Post by: Mark on November 03, 2024, 09:13:03 AM
A deep low-pressure system has plunged down from the Norwegian Sea, bringing early snowfall to northern Europe.

To close out the week, this icy front will deliver harsh winter conditions to Russia's Kola Peninsula, located just east of Scandinavia and bordered by the Barents and White Seas.

In the Murmansk Region of Russia, significant snowfall is forecast, and strong, gusty winds will add to the chill. Temperatures will plunge to -3C (27F) at night and hover between struggling to climb above the freezing mark during the day.

Heatwave in Kirkenes Yr.no
11.6°C is the temperature recorded in Kirkenes, Arctic Norway, on 8 November 2024. It's 2.8 degrees warmer than the previous highest temperature ever recorded in Kirkenes in November.

"We are surprised. We expected snow here," a tourist from Singapore, Sap, told the Barents Observer in Kirkenes on Friday morning.

Sap and her friend Yee said they had come to Kirkenes to see the aurora borealis and also booked a snowmobile tour:

"We are disappointed that the snowmobile tour has been canceled. But the tourism company has promised to replace it with an extra lunch," said Yee, "It's global warming - it's happening everywhere. We just have to accept it," she added.

The reindeer sleigh ride Yee and Sap had booked the day before in Finnish Lapland was canceled as well.

The heatwave on 8 November was also recorded in other places inside the European part of the Arctic Circle:

Post by: Mark on November 24, 2024, 08:56:45 AM
A severe Arctic blast is set to grip much of Europe, tanking temperatures to below -30C (-22F) in Alpine regions and to potentially record-breaking levels across the likes of the UK. Heavy snowfalls and widespread disruptions are expected as the polar air plunges south, impacting nations from Scandinavia through Italy to Ukraine.

The UK could face temperatures below -12C (10.4F) which would rival the record low for the date: -14.9C (5.2F) from November 18, 1905 (Braemar, Aberdeenshire).

Southeastern Europe is experiencing much lower than expected temperatures this week, bringing heavy snowfall and flooding risks.

Freezing temperatures and heavy snow have caused disruptions in several parts of southeastern Europe, ranging from transport issues to schools being forced to shut.

A storm system has brought strong winds, heavy rainfall, and snowfall in mountainous areas across parts of countries such as Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Slovenia.

More than 70 schools were closed in Albania on Monday after access to several villages was blocked by severe weather. Authorities have been clearing snow from roads and restoring traffic in the Balkan nation's northern and southeastern parts.

Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Italy have also issued alerts for heavy snow in recent days. In Bulgaria's Smolyan region, snow cover reached 40 centimetres on Monday.

The heavy snowfall caused problems at the Predel Pass, where two trucks crashed and had to be removed with snow-clearing machinery. Despite the large amount of snow and severe traffic, there were no major traffic jams, according to local media reports.

In North Macedonia, in the region of Prilep, the authorities put restrictions on cargo vehicles due to the snowfall. The local traffic authorities announced that the situation on the regional roads was complicated, but under control.

"They have been working (the emergency crews) for 36 hours continuously since the snow started to fall," said Sasho Vasilevski, the manager of the country's public road management service.

Municipalities located above 800 metres in the Italian region of Puglia have also experienced significant snowfall. The wave of cold air coming from northeastern Europe significantly worsened weather conditions in the province of Foggia, where snowfall was recorded in mountain locations such as Faeto and Monteleone.

The cold temperatures also brought flood risks to lower altitude areas. On Tuesday, Sicily issued a yellow alert due to heavy thunderstorms affecting the entire island. France has also issued an orange flood warning for the north, and there are avalanche alerts across the western Alps.

Title: Italy: Floods and gale force winds batter Sicily as rescue efforts intensify
Post by: Mark on January 26, 2025, 09:07:02 AM
Sicily faced chaos on Friday as torrential rains triggered severe flooding across the island. Catania saw dramatic scenes, including fire brigade workers rescuing a man trapped in a submerged car.

The Alcantara River overflowed in Taormina, while gales toppled trees and masonry in Caltanissetta. Relentless storms cut off the Aeolian Islands, including Lipari, Vulcano, and Stromboli, forcing school closures.

Sardinia and parts of Calabria also enacted similar measures as a weather alert remained in effect. Authorities reported 315 emergency responses in Sicily, with Catania, Enna, and Ragusa hardest hit. In Randazzo, 14 people were evacuated as the Annunziata torrent rose dangerously.

Rescue operations doubled in scale as teams secured structures and cleared fallen trees. Meteorologist Antonio Sanò warned that the extreme weather, driven by a Tunisian vortex, would continue to unleash heavy rain and raise the risk of further flooding in Sicily, Sardinia, and Calabria.

Title: Up to 1.2m (4 feet) of snowfall in 3 days in the Alps Austria
Post by: Mark on February 09, 2025, 08:48:12 AM
The snowfall has bolstered base depths with Avoriaz, Chamonix and Les Arcs all now posting 3m/10 feet plus lying on their higher slopes. This is seen as good news for the remainder of the season, especially with Easter Sunday at the later end of its range, not arriving until the latter half of April. That's translating into an uptick in interest in later season ski trips, according to travel companies.

"We're seeing a big increase in bookings of Easter ski holidays, with some customers saying they had planned not to ski this year but the incredible snowfall is too good to miss. There's still quite good availability booking is brisk which means discounts will vanish so, if you want to enjoy some of the best skiing in years with your kids, now is the time to book," says Richard Sinclair of SNO Ski Holidays.

It's also worth noting that snowfall was heavy into Austria (the Stubai Glacier is pictured below this week) and further east in Italy and Switzerland where some ski areas had been struggling with very little snowfall this season until this week. Livigno in Italy saw its base depth more than double after it saw over half a metre (20") of snow.

Title: Snowstorm hits Turkey: Flights delayed, ski resorts see record snow
Post by: Mark on February 23, 2025, 09:07:46 AM
A powerful winter storm sweeping Turkey is bringing flight delays, road closures, and record-breaking snowfall in ski resorts, causing major disruptions for travelers.

The impact of the heavy snowstorm is being felt across multiple regions, from Istanbul's airports to popular winter tourism destinations like Uludağ, Palandöken, and Kartalkaya.

Flights Delayed as Istanbul Struggles with Heavy Snow

The snowstorm severely affected Istanbul's airports, with planes forced to circle above Sabiha Gökçen Airport due to poor runway conditions. The heavy snowfall reduced visibility, causing significant delays and forcing some flights to divert to alternative airports.

As the snowfall intensified on the evening of February 20, Sabiha Gökçen Airport had to temporarily suspend operations to allow runway and taxiway clearing. Snow removal vehicles worked extensively to remove ice and snow, ensuring the runway was safe for landings and takeoffs. During this period, several aircraft were left circling in holding patterns over Istanbul, awaiting clearance to land.

Post by: Mark on April 27, 2025, 08:51:08 AM
Heavy rains lead to orange alert as authorities prepare for significant overflows and evacuations

On April 20, 2025, the departments of Dordogne, Corrèze, and Gironde in southwestern France are grappling with severe flooding as they remain under orange alert due to relentless heavy rainfall. This weather phenomenon has led to significant water level rises in local rivers, with authorities warning of unprecedented overflow levels not seen in decades.

According to Météo-France, the orange alert for flooding was issued early Sunday morning, with predictions of continued rain throughout the day and into the night. The Vézère, Auvézère, and Isle rivers have been particularly affected, prompting emergency services to prepare for potential evacuations and property damage.

The situation escalated quickly, with reports indicating that certain areas received between 70 to 100 millimeters of rain in just 48 hours, equivalent to an entire month of rainfall. As a result, the prefecture of Dordogne indicated that flood levels could reach heights not witnessed since September 1993 or even January 1982. "The rainy episode continues, particularly in the north and east of the Dordogne department, and thus the watercourses continue to rise," stated the prefecture.

Severe thunderstorms with large hail hit parts of south-west France on Monday afternoon.

Meteo-France - the French weather service - had issued amber weather warnings in the Midi-Pyrenees and Aquitaine regions for thunderstorms and flash flooding. The service has provisionally reported that one person has been killed and another has been reported missing.

To the south of Toulouse, residents captured video of impressive hailstorms which ripped off tree branches and damaged crops.

Some of the large hail was reported to be the size of ping-pong balls.

The area of thunderstorms, producing approximately 13,000 lighting strikes in south-west France, also gave some significant rainfall totals.

Title: Record Cold Across Central Europe
Post by: Mark on July 13, 2025, 09:11:49 AM
A fierce summer chill has gripped Central Europe, dragging daytime highs down to autumn-like levels.

Driven by a stalled upper-level low, the outbreak set new record low maximum temperatures from the Netherlands to Czechia, readings more typical of mid-October than high summer — an event that has gone largely ignored.

Here are a handful of the new record low daytime highs set over the past few days:

Hohenpeißenberg, Germany, logged just 11.4C (52.5F). Pec pod Sněžkou in Czechia hit 12.4C (54.3F), a reading matched by Alberschwende, Austria. Liesek, Slovakia saw 12.5C (54.5F), while Zakopane, Poland recorded 13C (55.4F). Mt. Rigi and Spa in Belgium climbed to just 14C (57.2F) and 14.9C (58.8F), respectively. Szentgotthárd in Hungary posted 16C (60.8F), Hanstholm in Denmark 16.2C (61.2F), Nancy in France 17.1C (62.8F), and Voorschoten in the Netherlands 17.4C (63.3F).

Title: Europe's “Dog Days” Feel Like Autumn
Post by: Mark on August 03, 2025, 09:03:36 AM
Europe's hottest stretch of the year is proving a disappointment.

On July 28, ground temperatures in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany dropped into single digits, according to a WDR analysis. That’s mid-autumn, not midsummer.

"Autumn or summer…?," asks wobleibtdieglobaleerwaermung.

Forecasts from the ECMWF and GFS show little reprieve. Latest models project widespread rain and temperature anomalies of 6-12C below the baseline well into August — across much of Europe:

GFS 2m Temperature Anomalies for July 29 [tropicaltidbits.com]

The culprit is a stubborn Rossby wave pattern.

A persistent northwesterly flow is driving cool, moisture-laden Atlantic air into Central Europe, keeping temperatures suppressed and conditions unsettled—with heavy downpours and even snow in the Alps.

Firefighters battled multiple wildfires across Greece on Wednesday, including blazes threatening villages and towns near the western city of Patras and on two tourist islands.

Fires have burned houses, farms and factories and prompted the evacuation of thousands of residents and tourists since Tuesday.

Dozens of people have been taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation since Tuesday, public broadcaster ERT reported. Some 13 firefighters have been treated for burns and other injuries, fire brigade spokesman Vassilis Vathrakogiannis told a televised briefing on Wednesday.

Nearly 5,000 firefighters assisted by 33 aircraft were deployed from dawn to contain the flames stoked by winds and hot, dry conditions near Patras, on the tourist islands of Chios and Zakynthos and in at least three inland spots.

Title: Early Snows For The Alps "Europe
Post by: Mark on September 28, 2025, 08:51:49 AM
The models are flagging an unusually sharp start to fall across central Europe.

The latest GFS runs project a completed cold-core low embedded in the polar jet stream at around 300 hPa (9 km) over the Alps by October 1. This setup is primed to deliver heavy snowfall, dragging snowlines down to below 1,500 m (4,900 feet).

Snow depth forecasts show up to 30 cm (1 ft) settling across wide swathes of the central and eastern Alps by midweek:

Title: Feet Of Snow Hit The Alps, France, Switzerland, and Italy.
Post by: Mark on October 05, 2025, 08:48:24 AM
The Alps have flipped from late-summer warmth to early-winter cold in just days, with snowfalls of up to 2 feet now burying peaks in France, Switzerland, and Italy.

At Zermatt’s Gornergrat, temperatures are now below freezing; Italy’s Piedmont region logged its heaviest September snowfall in more than 30 years, forcing widespread road closures; and Switzerland’s famed Gotthard Pass also had to shut as drifts mounted.

This year’s totals actually fall a little short of last year’s (Sept 2024 saw a 3-ft storm), but the scale and intensity still marks this as a striking start to the 2025-26 ski season — and another data point in a growing run of early autumn snows across Europe.

Title: Romania’s Mountain Snow
Post by: Mark on October 05, 2025, 08:54:18 AM
Romania has received early season snow this week, notable on the Transfăgărășan (Bâlea Lake sector).

Road crews have been plowing and salt-spreading across the country’s higher elevations, in Transalpina between Rânca and Obârșia Lotrului, in Maramureș at Prislop Pass, and across other high zones including Suceava’s Gura Haitii and Parâng-Șureanu.

The Administrația Națională de Meteorologie (ANM) has a countrywide advisory in force through October 2 warning of nationwide lows as well as sizable snows above 1,500 m [4,900 ft], with inches of additional accumulation on the cards.

Title: Spain, Severe storm drops more than 60 liters of rain per square meter in less
Post by: Mark on October 19, 2025, 09:15:10 AM
Granada's western region experienced a Friday afternoon marked by a brief yet intense downpour. A storm descended heavily on the municipality of Íllora in less than an hour, leaving up to 60 liters per square meter and triggering a yellow warning from the Aemet (National Meteorological Agency ). The heavy downpour caused at least fifteen incidents, according to 112 Andalucía, mainly due to flooding in homes, garages, and streets that were completely submerged.

Several residents experienced flooding in their homes and businesses, forcing them to act quickly to prevent further damage. Granada Fire Department crews and municipal workers responded to the area to pump out the water and clear the mud from the roads.

The heavy downpour also disrupted traffic on several roads. The A-336, which connects Íllora with Pinos Puente, and the GR-4403, which leads to Puerto Lope, had to be temporarily closed due to accumulated water. In addition, the emergency services warned of problems in other parts of the West, such as the A-4154 as it passes through Montefrío and Algarinejo, recommending drivers exercise caution due to the presence of puddles on the road.

Title: 1 meter (3.3 feet) of snow falling in 72 hours across French and Swiss resorts.
Post by: Mark on November 30, 2025, 08:47:40 AM
The Alps have erupted into deep winter, with more than 1 meter (3.3 feet) of snow falling in 72 hours across French and Swiss resorts.

Chamonix is reporting a full meter (39.4 inches), followed by Val d’Isère at 81 cm (31.9 in), Courchevel at 80 cm (31.5 in), and 70 cm (27.6 in) at both Alpe d’Huez and Les Deux Alpes. Crans-Montana reports 60 cm (23.6 in).

Austria has also been hit: widespread 20–40 cm (8–16 in) totals have been reported here, with more on the way.

And snow has reached valley floors for the first time this autumn.

Avalanche danger has risen sharply, sitting at Level 4 (high) in parts of the western Alps in France and Switzerland.

Roughly 30 ski areas are already open. Austria’s Sölden leads with 98 km of pistes, overtaking Zermatt/Cervinia’s 86 km.

Title: Europe To Freeze This Weekend
Post by: Mark on January 04, 2026, 08:32:32 AM
This weekend, Jan 3 and 4, marks the opening act of a widespread cold and snow setup that will cause disruption across much of Europe.

High-latitude blocking is forcing Arctic air south, undercutting milder Atlantic flow. As the cold digs in, precipitation zones riding along the boundary will increasingly fall as snow rather than rain. The result will be tanking temperatures, expanding frost, and a sharply descending snow line.

For the UK, this means a swift transition to proper cold conditions.

Nighttime temperatures will drop below freezing across large areas, with daytime values struggling to recover. Snow risk increases as colder air locks in, particularly where frontal systems stall or pivot. Even low elevations to the south are in play.

Across mainland Europe, the signal is broader and more entrenched.

Central and northern regions face sustained sub-zero nights, while southern and western areas see cold air pressing farther than usual for early January. Snow cover is likely to expand quickly, increasing surface cooling and reinforcing the cold.

This is not a brief cold snap. The atmospheric setup favors persistence, with blocking patterns known for dragging events out longer than expected. Transport disruption, icy conditions, and elevated energy demand are expected as winter asserts itself.

The first weekend of January is the start, not the peak.

Title: Snowy Europe
Post by: Mark on January 11, 2026, 02:00:57 PM
A sustained Arctic outbreak has driven widespread snow disruption and biting cold across much of Europe, stretching from Scandinavia and Scotland to the Balkans and Turkey.

In the UK, heavy snow has disrupted roads, rail, and aviation, particularly across Scotland where deep drifts and blizzards hit:

Looking east, similar scenes played out in the Netherlands, where deep snow accumulated in Limburg and around Mook:

The wider Netherlands saw some of the most severe knock-on effects, with mass flight cancellations as snow and ice overwhelmed ground operations. Hundreds of departures were scrapped as reduced runway capacity and de-icing constraints rippled through the European network, compounding delays well beyond Dutch airspace.

In the Baltic region, Lithuania recorded its deepest snow cover in 15 years which restricted operations at its Vilnius Airport.

Across Poland, the likes of Słupsk saw persistent snowfall rather than short-lived showers:

Farther southeast, winter intensified dramatically across Turkey.

Snowfall shut off mountainous regions including Hakkari and also Kastamonu where 1.5m (almost 5ft) accumulated:

Anatolia was plunged into extreme cold. In Ardahan province, the Gole district recorded −39.7C (−39.5F), the lowest temperature in the country this season, with multiple locations across Sivas, Kars, Erzurum, and Agri crashing below −30C (−22F). Rivers froze, infrastructure iced over, and daily life was heavily impacted.

Title: Europe Is Frozen
Post by: Mark on January 11, 2026, 02:06:12 PM
Berlin’s grid was deliberately sabotaged on Jan 3 by a far-left extremist group calling itself Vulkangruppe (Volcano Group).

Arsonists set fire to a high-voltage cable bridge over the Teltow Canal, cutting electricity and heating to 45,000 to 50,000 homes and more than 2,000 businesses in southwest Berlin during freezing winter conditions.

The group openly claimed responsibility, stating the attack targeted fossil fuel infrastructure and rising power demand from AI data centers. Even days later, around 20,000 homes are still without power.

This was a targeted attack on civilian energy infrastructure — and it has received minimal media attention.

Germany has been dealing with persistent cold and disruptive snow since the turn of the New Year, with lows of -13C (8.6F).

This has been the story for much of Europe. Lows nearing -40C have swept from Scandinavia to Turkey. And most recently, during the early hours of Jan 7, temperatures across the Alpine arc read -31.1C (-24F) on Monte Rosa and -33.4C (-28F) on Mont Blanc.

Looking ahead, the pattern looks to be deteriorating further.

A rapidly deepening Atlantic low is forecast to impact western Europe late week, bringing hurricane-force wind gusts and multiple feet of snow, particularly across England and France.

Title: Europe In The Freezer
Post by: Mark on January 18, 2026, 08:25:15 AM
A severe Arctic air mass tightened its grip on Europe over the weekend, delivering extreme, in some cases record-breaking cold across the north and east while heavy snow buried mountain regions farther south.

Scandinavia led the plunge.

Karasjok, Norway dropped to -41.5C (-42.7F), marking a fourth consecutive night below -40C and a third straight below -41C — both new records for any month since observations began there in 2005.

Røros Airport, also Norway, logged -37.3C (-35.1F), the station’s third lowest January reading on record. Nearby Karesuando, Sweden fell to -40.1C (-40.2F). Finland went lower still, registering a new coldest temperature of the winter at -42.8C (-45F).

The cold spread well beyond the Arctic Circle.

The western Alps are being buried under intense snowfall, with extreme avalanche danger now widespread.

In parts of Savoie, France including the corridor between Mont Blanc and Tarentaise, avalanche risk has reached the rare level of 5 out of 5. Heavy, continuous snow has forced major resort closures, with some areas—such as La Plagne—shutting all operations.

Title: Northern Europe Locked In Deep Freeze
Post by: Mark on February 22, 2026, 08:35:29 AM
Northern Europe has been enduring continued, continent-scale cold since the start of the year.

Across Scandinavia, the Baltics, and into Belarus, this year has delivered weeks of uninterrupted subzero weather. Daytime thaws have been rare. Nights have been relentlessly cold.

In Estonia, air temperatures have remained below 0C (32F) for 45 consecutive days across large areas — a level of continuous cold not seen there in decades.

Norway tells the same story.

In Oslo, temperatures have held below freezing for 32 straight days now. That makes it the third-longest subzero streak of the 21st century, behind only the 40-day run of Nov–Dec 2010 and the 33-day stretch of Dec 2009–Jan 2010.

At Røros Airport, themometers plunged to -33.8C (-28.8F) on Sunday, which marked the 20th day below -30C (-22F) so far this year. Records at Røros date back to 1876, and by Feb 15 only one year —1942— has recorded more such extreme cold days (with 22).

Title: heaviest accumulations span the French Alps
Post by: Mark on February 22, 2026, 08:39:21 AM
Powerful snowstorms are hammering the western and north-western Alps. Around 1 m (39 in) of snow fell over large parts on Monday, with another meter in the forecast Tuesday, pushing totals well beyond seasonal norms.

The heaviest accumulations span the French Alps, north-western Italy, and western and northern Switzerland.

Snowfall rates have been intense. In Stuben am Arlberg, for example around 15 cm (6 in) fell in under 20 minutes overnight Monday — reportedly among the most intense snowfall bursts observed there in years.

The avalanche danger is now extreme across much of the Alps. In Switzerland, the SLF warns that rail lines, roads, and even exposed settlements are at risk. On Monday, an avalanche near Goppenstein derailed a train.
Farther southeast, while snow is more limited, cover remains healthy.

Predictably, less than a week after climate activists warned that global warming threatens the future of the Winter Olympics, Cortina d’Ampezzo, host of the 2026 games, is receiving an impressive dumping, one that is disrupting events, even.

Title: Europe's mounting avalanche death toll: 86 so far this winter with record downfa
Post by: Mark on February 22, 2026, 09:20:53 AM
Europe's avalanche crisis is escalating, with 86 people including at least four Brits killed this season as severe snowfall and unstable mountain conditions wreak havoc across the Alps and beyond.

France has recorded the highest toll so far with 25 deaths, followed by Italy with 21 and Austria with 14, while Switzerland has lost nine and Spain eight.

Slovakia reported four deaths and Slovenia three, with a single death in Andorra.

The vast majority of victims were caught in wind slab avalanches or collapses linked to persistent weak layers buried deep within the snow, often triggered after fresh downfalls.

Most were skiing off piste or travelling in backcountry terrain, with others killed while mountaineering, climbing or hiking.

At least four Brits have been killed by avalanches this season, with the latest tragedy taking place on Tuesday, when a British man died in the Alps after an avalanche hit a group of five off-piste skiers and their guide near a French resort.

The slide struck the Côte Fine couloir in La Grave on Tuesday morning.

Two skiers were found in cardiorespiratory arrest and later pronounced dead, according to Marion Lozac'Hmeur, Public Prosecutor of Gap.

One man, born in 1987, was Polish. The other, born in 1989, was a British national originally from Poland who lived in Switzerland.

The deaths come just days after two other British skiers as well as a French national were killed in an avalanche in the upmarket French Alpine resort of Val d'Isere on Friday.

The Brits were named as Stuart Leslie, 46, and 51-year-old Shaun Overy.

Emergency services responded quickly but could not save their lives, a resort official said, noting that all of the victims had avalanche transceivers.

This unfolded less than 24 hours after the Savoie region was placed on a rare red avalanche alert - a warning level issued only twice before in the 25 years since its introduction.

Although the alert had been lifted by Friday morning, the risk remained at four out of five - officially 'high' - with avalanches 'easily triggered by skiers or hikers' and capable of mobilising 'very large volumes of snow'.

Two skiers also died over the weekend after being buried in the snow following an off-trail avalanche in Italy, close to the borders with France and Switzerland.

At least three skiers were caught up in Sunday morning's avalanche on the Mont Blanc massif.

The tragedy occurred in the Couloir Vesses, a well-known freeride route in Courmayeur, in upper Val Veny, according to Italy's Alpine Rescue.

A record 13 backcountry skiers, climbers and hikers died in the Italian mountains during the first week of February, Alpine Rescue reported last Monday, including 10 in avalanches triggered by an exceptionally unstable snowpack.

Earlier this month on February 7, three people were killed by avalanches while skiing off-piste in mountains close to where the Milano Cortina Winter Olympic Games are taking place.

The Alpine rescue service said they recovered a man's body after two avalanches hit the Marmolada area in the Dolomites, not far from Cortina d'Ampezzo.

Another two off-piste skiers died in Albosaggia, a village in the lower Valtellina valley, some 40 miles east of Bormio.

The deaths came just days after another avalanche in the Trentino Alto Adige region killed two Finnish skiers.

And last month, an Englishman, believed to be in his 50s was reportedly amongst six skiers killed in avalanches over the weekend of the 11th, after skiing off-piste at the La Plagne resort in south-eastern France.

Rescue teams received an avalanche alert at 1.57pm on Sunday and immediately went to the site, the resort said.

The man was located after 50 minutes buried under eight feet of snow, but could not be revived.

His death came during a weekend marked by several avalanches across the Alps following several days of heavy snow.

Amongst other victims that weekend were three skiers killed in the Savoie region after being caught in avalanches in Val-d'Isère and the Arêches-Beaufort resort.

A female skier also died in Austria on January 11 after being buried by an avalanche on Weerberg mountain in the Schwaz district of Tyrol, while a man in Italy was killed by an avalanche above the northern city of Aosta on January 10.

On January 13 a Czech child was tragically killed by an avalanche while skiing off-piste in the Austrian alpine resort of Bad Gastein

And on January 18, eight skiers died after three avalanches struck across Austria in the space of just four hours.

Beginning on Monday of this week, severe snowfall across Switzerland and parts of northern Italy has created mounting issues.

Title: Record Snow Pounds The Alps Switzerland
Post by: Mark on March 22, 2026, 08:32:10 AM
A powerful storm has buried parts of the Alps under deep snow, with extreme accumulations reported across Switzerland and northern Italy.

In Bosco-Gurin, Ticino, 116 cm (45.7 inches) of snow fell in just 24 hours, setting a new station record.

Elsewhere across the southern Alps, totals exceeded 1 m (3.3 ft) at altitude. Heavy snowfall hit eastern Aosta, northern Piedmont, and southern Switzerland, including areas around Gressoney and Macugnaga.

In Bosco-Gurin, 116 cm fell in 24 hours, a new station record.

Snowfall was not confined to high peaks. Even at mid-elevations, the storm exceeded expectations. Pila in Valsesia (at 686 m / 2,250 ft) was heavily snow-covered by the morning of March 15.

Title: Massive late-March snowstorm buries Europe's eastern Alps with up to 1.5 meter (
Post by: Mark on March 29, 2026, 09:26:17 AM
A powerful late-season storm cycle has delivered a major refresh across the eastern Alps, with Switzerland leading the charge after several days of sustained snowfall. The standout has been Engelberg, where snowfall totals have been exceptional even by mid-winter standards. According to OpenSnow data, the resort received 84 cm (33 inches) in the past 24 hours and 132 cm (52 inches) over the past five days, catapulting conditions back into peak-season form.

The storm has been driven by a moist northwesterly flow, favoring northern Alpine regions and creating classic "Nordstau" conditions—where precipitation intensifies as air is forced over the mountains. The storm didn't stop at Switzerland. Zugspitze, Germany's highest peak, was also hammered, with around 1.5 meters (nearly 5 feet) of fresh snow reported in recent days. But that much snow comes with complications. In a post on social media, the resort cautioned: "A lot of snow does not automatically mean a lot of skiing. 1.5 meters of fresh snow must first be tamed... colleagues work around the clock to secure the ski area and prepare the slopes." Ongoing snowfall and poor visibility have delayed operations, with the resort indicating it expects to reopen over the weekend, pending improved weather conditions.

Post by: Mark on April 05, 2026, 08:11:28 AM
https://electroverse.substack.com/p/winter-returns-to-europe-cold-extends
Winter has pushed back across much of Europe in the final days of March, with fresh snowfall, sub-zero temperatures, and a stronger Alpine storm now underway.

In the Elbasan Region, central Albania, heavy snowfall delivered a sharp return to winter across Elbasan, Librazhd, Gramsh, and Prrenjas, with 25 cm (9.8 inches) settling, and deeper accumulations in higher terrain including Shebenik National Park.

To the south, in Greece, snowfall swept through the mountainous regions of Epirus and Western Macedonia. In northwestern Greece, conditions are more typical of midwinter than late March, with snow-clearing operations deployed.

Turning east, to the Alps, a two-stage storm cycle is unfolding.

A modest first pulse delivered 15 cm (6 inches) to western and northern ranges overnight Saturday, with snow levels down to 400 m (1,300 ft) allowing accumulation at most ski areas.

Fresh snowfall has piled up fast across the European Alps — 50 cm (19.7 in) widely reported, with localized totals doubling that.

More than a meter (41 inches) has been registered over high terrain in parts of France, Switzerland, Austria and the Bavarian Alps of Germany.

Strong high-altitude winds have redistributed snow beyond the usual spots, pushing accumulations into areas like Ticino.

Intense snowfall mixed with strong gusts of wind, villages buried under astronomical amounts of powder snow... It is almost apocalyptic weather that reigns over these regions in recent days... and the inhabitants will remember it.

Who could have predicted that 2026 would go down in history? Both in terms of rainfall and snowfall, it has broken numerous records this year. The many ski resorts still open are proof of this, as the intense snowfall of recent days has once again blanketed the slopes in white.

This allows skiers who wish to do so to enjoy the pleasures of skiing one last time at Easter. While the heavy snowfall is a boon for ski resorts, this isn't necessarily the case elsewhere. When winter hasn't yet had its final say in the mountains, sometimes an entire area is paralyzed, as was the case this week.

Post by: Mark on April 12, 2026, 08:22:59 AM
Capracotta, Italy has just been buried by a spring snowstorm more typical of January.

The mountain town in Molise, sitting at 1,421 m (4,662 ft), was recently hit by a blizzard that dropped 1.5 m (59 in) of snow in about 24 hours. Follow-up coverage from Italian media showed snow depths in the town exceeding 2 m (79 in), with some local reports saying the deepest drifts topped 3 m (118 in).
