https://www.sott.net/article/411702-Arctic-blast-in-Russia-brings-record-breaking-low-temperatures
In Bezenchuk, -6.3 degrees was recorded which broke the previous record set in 1978 by a whopping 2.5 degrees.
El'ton dipped to -1.7 degrees, enough to beat a 90 year old record.
-4.4 degrees was measured in Frolovo, beating the 1945 record.
In Dombarovsk, -8.2 smashed the former record of -4.9 set in 1998.
And in the village of Yekaterino-Nikolsky, the mercury plummeted to -8.3 degrees breaking the previous record of -6.1 degrees set 63 years ago.
The cold is forecast to push further north and east into central and southern Russia over the coming days.
North Africa and the Middle East are also experiencing anomalously frigid temperatures for the time of year.

And the coldest entire month of July since 1987.
_____________
July became the coldest since 1987. But the “top of the summer” surprises even more. This season, July 31, usually the warmest day of the year, became the coldest in the history of the VDNKh weather station, which has been conducting a series of observations since 1948.
The night of August 5th was the coldest this season. The minimum temperature varied from +2 to +8 degrees. From the regional centers the coldest (up to +4) was in Orel, Tula, Ivanovo.
Traditionally, the lowest values were observed on the Meshchersk lowland. In the east of Moscow, the north of Ryazan, the south of Vladimir and Nizhny Novgorod regions, the temperature dropped to + 1.6 … + 2.7.
Cold July passed the baton to cold August. According to calculations, only a third of days with a temperature above +20 are expected within a month.
In Moscow the temperature will remain 4–6 degrees below the climatic norm: at night about +10, during the day up to + 16 … + 18 degrees.https://www.gismeteo.ru/news/klimat/33149-pogoda-v-moskve-samye-holodnye-vyhodnye-leta/

The cold night was in the Irkutsk region, Trans-Baikal Territory and Buryatia. So in Orling, Irkutsk Region, the temperature dropped to 3.8 degrees (the previous record of 4.5 was noted in 2002); in Romanovka (Buryatia), the minimum temperature reached 1.3 degrees (the previous record was 1.4 degrees in 1947); and in Transbaikalia (Chary), the thermometer column dropped to -1.4 degrees (in 1943 it was 0.0 degrees). / and in Transbaikalia (Chary), the thermometer column dropped to -1.4 degrees (in 1943 it was 0.0 degrees). / and in Transbaikalia (Chary), the thermometer column dropped to -1.4 degrees (in 1943 it was 0.0 degrees). / íÅÔÅÏÎÏ×ÏÓÔÉ : ðÒÏÇÎÏÚ ÐÏÇÏÄÙ, ËÁÒÔÙ ÐÏÇÏÄÙ, ÎÏ×ÏÓÔÉ ÐÏÇÏÄÙ, ÆÁËÔÉÞÅÓËÁÑ ÐÏÇÏÄÁ (http://meteonovosti.ru/)

The weather in Chukotka and Kamchatka has noticeably deteriorated.
Both in the continental regions of Chukotka and in Kamchatka it is now much colder than it should be on the calendar. The temperature anomaly reaches 6-8 degrees.
In Kamchatka, and in the southeast, the cold reached a record. In Nachiki, on the morning of February 4, the air cooled to -43.4°C. The previous record, -42.7 °C, held since 1973.
Not only cold, but also blizzards with a sharp gusty wind (up to 24 m/s) came both to Kamchatka and Chukotka. And this weather will last some more time.
On February 6 in Chukotka temperatures will drop to -30 ..- 35°C, in places -25 ..- 30°C, in continental areas up to -50°C.
In Kamchatka in the south of the peninsula -10 ..- 15°C, in places -20 ..- 25, at night to -41 ..- 46°C. In the northern regions -22 ..- 27°C, in places -12 ..- 17°C, at night to -40°C.

According to hmn.ru, “severe blizzards” and “sharp gusty winds” accompanied the brutal cold, with the Arctic conditions forecast to last for “some more time.”
On Feb. 6, the mercury in Chukotka plunged to as low as -50C (-58F) and beyond.
While in Kamchatka (known for its active volcanoes), readings of -40C (-40F) and below were observed.

More typical of the end of April. And the possibility of snow.
Cold continues in Moscow.
For almost a week, Moscow remains dominated by cold weather. The lag in temperature is 3-5 degrees. A cold gusty wind blows, it rains regularly.
We warned that the cooling would be protracted. Moreover, from Thursday cooling will intensify.
The average daily temperature drops to + 8°C, this is the criterion from which the central heating is switched on. The weather will still be unstable and windy.
At night, slight frosts are not excluded. Daytime temperature will remain at + 10 … + 15°C. Such values are more typical for the end of April. Warm weather will begin only on May 25.

Meteorologist calls it ‘a snow Armageddon, a snow apocalypse.”
___________
Heavy snowfalls have buried Moscow, disrupting transport, delaying flights and making it tough even to walk, braving strong winds and temperatures of minus 15C (5F).
The snowfall started late Thursday and was expected to end on Sunday. Russia’s emergency service advised people to stay away from trees, warning of winds gusts of 18 meters per second (40 mph).
“It’s a real snowstorm, a snow Armageddon, a snow apocalypse. This is not a practice alert, but a combat alert,” warned Evgeny Tishkovets from the weather service Fobos before the snowfall began.
By early Saturday, snow depth in the city reached 56 cms (22 inches), Fobos said. This was close to exceeding a record high of 60 cm for accumulated snow on a Feb. 13, it said.
On Friday Moscow saw record snowfall for a Feb. 12, breaking the previous record set for the date in 1973, Russian news agencies reported.
There have been multiple flight delays at the airports in Moscow, a city of more than 12 million people. Unusually for a weekend, traffic was jammed in many places.
Around 60,000 people were working to clear the streets, the Moscow mayor’s office said.

Huge masses of snow have accumulated on the slopes of Altai, at the Sheregesh resort there are practically no places to stay, everything is booked!
__________
Extreme avalanche danger in Russia
There is a long weekend of vacations ahead and for sure many are planning to go to ski resorts.
We warn you – the danger of avalanche is now extreme across the country!
In Sakhalin, it is planned in 9 regions, according to the regional avalanche center of Sakhalin UGMS:
in Uglegorsky, Makarovsky, Tomarinsky, Kholmsky, Dolinsky, Anivsky, Nevelsky, Korsakovsky and in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk itself.
Huge masses of snow have accumulated on the slopes of Altai, at the Sheregesh resort there are practically no places to stay, everything is booked!
This means that there are many skiers and, among them, many freeride fans – that is, off-piste skiing. Often, they are the ones who “cut” the avalanches.
Well, the most dangerous situation is now in the Caucasus.
In the mountains of the Krasnodar Territory and Adygea, the danger of an avalanche exceeds 2500 m.!
In the mountains of Karachay-Cherkessia, Kabardino-Balkaria, North Ossetia and Dagestan, this mark is lowest – at 1500 m.
The fact is that the descent of the mass of snow accumulated from the slope is usually caused by climatic reasons: a sudden change in weather (including changes in atmospheric pressure, air humidity), rain, heavy snowfalls.
And that is the weather, according to our predictions, next weekend in the North Caucasus.

https://www.sott.net/article/451535-Russian-capital-breaks-140-year-old-record-during-surge-of-summerlike-warmth
On Tuesday, the high temperature in Moscow, Russia's capital and largest city, surged to 22.6 C (73 F), making it the highest temperature on April 13 in at least 140 years of observations, Reuters reported.
On Wednesday, another record was set as the temperature rose to 22 C (72 F). This broke the previous record of 20.8 (69.4 F) last reached in 1962, according to Russia's Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring.
High temperatures in Moscow in the lower 20s C (lower 70s F) typically occur during the beginning of June.
The records were broken amid a stretch of warmth that took hold of a large portion of western Russia.
"Temperatures across a large portion of western and central Russia have been running above normal since about April 11," said AccuWeather Meteorologist Rob Richards.
The warmth on the region peaked from April 12 to April 14, with high temperatures 6-13 degrees C (10-20 degrees F) above normal.
The warmth also extended into western and northern parts of Siberia where temperatures have been above normal for much of the month.
It has been an unusually mild April across western and northern Siberia. Amderma, a community located on Russia's northern coast with the Kara Sea, has had temperatures above normal every day this month. On April 8, temperatures reached 2.8 C (37 F). While it does not sound very warm, temperatures typically remain between -18 C (zero F) for a low and -11 C (13 F) for a high on that date.
"A large area of high pressure has been in control of the weather which has led to the string of warm weather," Richards said. "This is expected to continue through the weekend before temperatures slowly begin to trend closer to normal."
The normal high temperatures in Moscow for this time of the year is around 11 C (52 F).

Fortunately, the incident didn't cause any injuries or deaths, with its impact limited to waterfront damage.
A massive ice drift in the Amur River has crashed into the coastline in the Russian Far East city of Khabarovsk, ripping down a concrete-reinforced metal barrier and nearly crushing passersby who had gathered to watch.
Dramatic footage of the incident was captured by local residents armed with cellphones, with huge slabs of ice seen pushing up onto the embankment.
Video shot from above the area showed ice drifts literally hundreds of feet long moving toward the shore at high speed, crashing against one another, forming ice chunks and forcing part of the floe to spew onto the shore.

Dust storm in Astrakhan, Russia
A giant wall of orange dust whipped up by strong winds has swept through southern Russia, painting the skies an eerie orange color while the gusts destroyed property and even injured some locals.
The storm ripped through Astrakhan Region, Republic of Kalmykia, known for its vast swathes of steppe, as well as Dagestan in the North Caucasus on Wednesday, wreaking havoc along the way.
Videos from Astrakhan Region on the Volga River showed deserted streets covered in thick orange mist and people running for safety. Some online commentators compared the striking images to those taken by rovers on the surface of Mars.

SCHOOL CANCELLED IN YAKUTIA, RUSSIA AS TEMPERATURES PLUNGE TO -50C (-58F)
Pupils across at least ten villages in the remote Russian region of Yakutia have been ordered to stay at home and study via distance learning as the mercury outside touched -50C (-58F), reports rt.com.
On Monday, November 22, the local government instructed 700 students to stay at home after a low of -50C (-58F) was recorded in the village of Kylaiy, in the Ust-Aldan district of Yakutia province — not too far from the region’s largest city of Yakutsk.
Other notable lows in the province include the -45C (-49F) in Batamay; the -44.8C (-48.6F) in Kerbo, Central Siberia; the -39.6C (-39.3F) in Verkhoyansk.

Exceptionally cold weather has gripped the Russian city of St. Petersburg this week.
The chill has been so severe that all-time records have been tumbling: Monday morning’s low of almost -21C (-5.8F) broke a daily benchmark set some 128 years ago, way back in 1893, according to meteorologist Mikhail Leus from the Fobos weather center.
“Today, St. Petersburg set a new daily cold weather record. Temperatures in the Northern Capital fell to minus 20.9 degrees, which is 0.4 degrees lower than on the same day back in 1893,” Leus wrote in a Facebook post.

Much of transcontinental Russia has been holding exceptionally cold of late — from the far east to the far west, records have been falling, and now, so has the snow…
According to Phobos meteorologist Yevgeny Tishkovets, Moscow has busted multiple December snowfall records.
Back on Dec 7, the heaviest snowstorm in 72 years struck the Russian capital — not since 1949 had more snow settled this early in the season.
Then we have the accumulations over the weekend (Dec 11-12), which included the biggest single-day dumping since 1993.
And most recently, on Mon, Dec 13, we hear that 20+% of the city’s monthly snow has now fallen, thanks to largest December drop for the date since 1989.

-
It’s been exceptionally cold and snowy across the majority of transcontinental Russia over the past 6-or-so weeks, with 90+% of the nation’s land mass blanketed in snow since late-October (Rutgers GSL).
Moscow has been copping heavy snow of late, too.
It has been snowing constantly in the capital since Sunday.
As a result, accumulations have built to 22 cm (8.7 inches) — one of the highest levels on record for the time of year, and one that approaches the highest totals (for mid-Dec) in books dating back to the 1800s: the 33 cm (13 inches) from 1919 (the Centennial Minimum).
More snow is in the forecast.
Russian weather site hmn.ru says there’s a chance Moscow will rival that historic benchmark: “Southern cyclones attack the central regions of Russia with maniacal persistence,” reads the opening line of an article dated Dec 16.
“Moscow barely has time to clear itself of one snowfall, as the next whirlwind is on its way,” continues hmr.ru. “The most intense snowfall will take place in Moscow on Saturday afternoon and Sunday night … By Monday, Dec 19, the snow depth at VDNH may exceed 30 cm, which will be a record for this day!”
Moscow’s official weather station (VDNKh) has received 28+cm (11 inches) by Dec 19 on just two separate occasion: 1985 and 1993 (both around solar minimums).

Extreme, record-slaying cold is persisting across Siberia as well as the wider Asian continent.
Over the weekend, a remarkable -62.4C (-80.3F) was officially registered in Tongulakh. This is a new all-time low for the locale, and also marks Russia’s coldest January temperature since 1982.

To Europe’s east, transcontinental Russia continues to face fierce, record-setting chills.
Tongulah has, for the third time this week, bested its all-time low temperature benchmark.
With a minimum of -62.7C (-80.9F) registered during the early hours of Wednesday morning, the Siberian village has again usurped its all time low and has again marked the coldest January temperature in all of Russia since 1982.
The historic cold –and resulting gas shortages– continue to impact much of Asia and the Middle East — as discussed yesterday:

The northern federal subjects of Russia have been holding anomalously-cold of late.
Russia’s first -20C (-4F) of the season has come early this year.
Tuesday’s low in Delyankir bottomed-out at -21C (-5.8F):
Elsewhere, an unusual -19.9C (-3.8F) was registered in Oymyakon; -13.1C (8.4F) in Verkhoyansk.

A few weeks ago now, on September 23, Verkhoyansk posted a low of -10.1C (13.8F) which made for the town’s earliest -10C in almost 15 years, since the Sept 17 of 2008 (solar minimum of cycle 24).
Across northern Siberia, in particular, ‘blues’ have been the dominant feature since the onset of fall, hinting at a potentially harsh winter to come.
While shifting eastwards, across the Bering Straight and through Alaska, a new seasonal low has been observed in Canada, too: Tuesday’s low in Eureka, Nunavut plunged to -27.3C (-17.1F):

Following yesterday’s report that 90% of Russia is blanketed in snow, low temperatures are also proving early and pervasive.
“The Russian winter is taking its course,” reports gismeteo.ru.
As early as October 11 Russia posted its first -20C (-4F) of the season, and by October 17 endured its first -30C (-22F).
And now the continental cold has reached a new benchmark: -40C (-40F).
Last weekend, in the Tuguro-Chumikansky district of the Khabarovsk Territory, the mercury crashed to -40C. This weather is considered “very cold” even in the depths of winter let alone in early-November, even by Russia’s standards.
The cold wasn’t a one-hit-wonder, either; on November 7 the Tomponsky ulus of Yakutia also posted -40C readings:

December across much of Russia has proven historically cold, with the east, in particular, seeing little letup.
Record temperatures have set in across the likes of Sakhalin, with the average high coming in some 10C below the norm.
In the Tymovsky and Smirnykhovsky districts –for example– lows of -33C (-27.4F) and -36C (-32.8F) have been logged, respectively. While the town of Okha, located in Okhinsky district, posted a record -31.9C (-25.4F) on Dec 26 which comfortably bested the previous low of -30C (-22F) set in 1946.
Frigid continental air will continue to flow into Sakhalin for the remainder of 2023, with more of the same forecast into January.
Looking west, the city of Yekaterinburg finds itself “buried under record snowdrifts,” as reported by gismeteo.ru.
Heavy snow on December 26 broke a daily record that had stood since the Russian Revolution of 1917. And by the morning of December 27 the city’s snow depth had reached 53 cm (21 inches) — such drifts (exceeding half a meter) hadn’t been seen for 25+ years.

This winter in Moscow will be remembered for its frosts and record snow.
On the morning of Feb 19, the snow at Moscow's VDNKh weather station stood at 67 cm (23.4 inches), which is more than twice the norm. In Balchug, snow depth read 59 cm (23.2"); in the MSU area, 70 cm (27.6"); and in Konkovo, 80 cm (31.5").
Additional snowfall is on the cards for Moscow mid-week, potentially returning the depth to record-challenging levels (set 1994).

“We are really at the critical frost threshold for apple trees and pears” said Mathieu Tissot, producer of the Tissot orchards in Haute-Savoie, France following several below-freezing nights.
Tissot orchards produce 1,600 tonnes of apples and pears each year, but recent frosts have threatened that yield. For the past week or so, record cold has hit.
"We had three nights including a very significant night where we went down to -2.3C (27.9F),” said Mathieu, "the critical frost threshold for apple trees and pears".
Mathieu said gusty winds have helped his buds to some degree (wind reduces the formation of frost from radiative cooling), but now the breeze has died down and the cold has intensified. "We had to start the fight again last night," he said.
In scenes repeated across France, wind machines are being used to propel hot air around orchard and vineyards. "We spend every 8 to 10 minutes in the same place to allow the plant to dry," explained Mathieu.
More traditional 'frost fires' have been lit up and down the country.

This isn't exaggeration, winter has returned to Russia, in May.
Freezes have struck Kaliningrad to Krasnoyarsk, and Murmansk to Krasnodar, while heavy snows have been observed from the northwest, through central regions, to the Volga, over the Urals, to Western and Central Siberia, and into the North Caucasus.
"Blizzards are raging in the Russian North, the Polar Urals, and northern Siberia," reports gismeteo.ru. "While in the middle latitudes, snow cover, rare for this time, has been restored."
The snow has been fiercest in and around the Urals where tens of thousands of people have lost power, in the Sverdlovsk region for one.
The water supply here has also been disrupted, according to local authorities.
Spring blizzards are raging across Russia.
Falling trees have snapped power lines, and cellular communications are also down.
Heavy snow fells trees in Sverdlovsk oblast, Russia's Ural region.
The disruptions have been widespread.
@Fobos563 on Youtube has compiled a handful of social media posts:
Speaking to the cold, the soil temperature in the Kushchevsky district of the Krasnodar Territory—for example—dropped to -2.4C (27.7F) on May 5. This is classified as 'dangerous' in May due to risk of frost damage to tender crops and budding fruits.
A frost warning was issued for May 5 and 6, recently extended to May 7.
Freezes have also swept the Republic of Adygea, in the Stavropol Territory.
Headed west, Moscow has also been enduring freezing lows. Muscovites could also see a few settling flakes in the coming days. The cold is set to persist and all, with -3C (26.6F) forecast later in the week and wet snow. "Almost the entire week the temperature will be 10 degrees [C] below normal, [akin] to early April," reports hmn.ru.
Likewise in St. Petersburg, lows of -5C (23F) have been registered after Arctic air crashed south through the Kara and Barents seas and down through Scandinavia. Settling snow is also expected here by Wednesday.
Note: Scandinavia has endured brutal chills this winter and spring. Savukoski Tulppio has posted a -30C (-22F) reading every month from November to April. The last time -30C was measured for six consecutive months in Finland was 45 years ago, in Kittilä Pokka, in 1979.
Longer-range models see Russia's 'return to winter' persisting until at least May 20.

Fierce Arctic air has gripped Eastern Europe and much of Russia of late, tanking temperatures down to as low as -6C (21.2F), to record-low levels for the time of year.
The below data comes courtesy of Russia's national meteorological service (Гидрометцентр России, Gidrometcentr Rossii), and via hmn.ru.
Famed for its rich, deep, black soil, Chernozem (the "Black Earth Belt") has been hit by hard frosts.
In Valuyki, thermometers dipped to -3.4C (25.9F) on May 10, smashing the previous record-low for the month of May of 0.8C set back in 1952.
Records also fell in In Yelets (-1.2C/29.8F), in Voronezh (-1.8C/28.8F), and in Tambov (-2.3C/27.9F) — to name just three others.
Frosts have ravaged the Volga region and all this May, on three separate occasions (to May 12).
In Balashov, a low of -4.4C (24.1F) was recently observed, a reading 2.2C below the old record which had stood since 1950. While in Alexandrov Gai, a rare -3.4C (25.9F) was noted.
In Sorochinsk, located in the Orenburg region, a low of -2.3C (27.9F) was posted, breaking the previous May record of -1.7C (28.9F) set in 1971. The average daily temperature here throughout May has held 11 degrees C below the historical average.
Record lows were also posted on the night of May 10 across the Rostov region, in Chertkovo and Gigant — to name two.
Frosts of -3.3 (26.1F) and -3.8 (25.2F) were suffered in Uryupinsk and Frolovo, respectively. They also reached Lugansk which shivered through -3.1 (26.4F), a mark that busted the locale's previous May extreme of -1.1C (30F) was from 1950.
Extremes May chills also swept the likes of the Yaroslavl region on May 11, as they did both the Kostroma and Orenburg regions.
While in the city of Vladimir, thermometers dipped to -1.8C (28.8F) and so set a new record-low for the month of May, besting the previous record by 0.6C, from 2017.

According to the head of Russia’s national meteorological service, Roman Vilfand, the first 10-days of May in the European section of the country (all 3.969 million km² of it) will be recognized as "the coldest in the history of observations."
As reported yesterday, this region has endured three separate Arctic onslaughts so far this month, breaking long-standing May temperature records on each occasion.
Vilfand said the area has faced an onslaught of brutal air masses crashing south from the Arctic Ocean, rare for the time of year, which has seen the air temperature across western Russia hold some 10C below climatic norms.
This unprecedented May cold has forced Gazprom (a state-owned multinational energy corporation) to step up its energy supply. As per reports, consumers have been supplied record volumes of gas this month, levels comparable to winter.
"For ten days in a row —from May 3 to May 12— gas supplies from the Unified Gas Supply System of Russia (USG) have been higher than the previous record value," the company said in a statement — the old record of UGSS 827.6 million cubic meters of gas (set on May 5, 2022) has been bested by a new "absolute peak ... of 904.8 million cubic meters".

Parts of Moscow were flooded due to heavy rainfall on Thursday, disrupting public transport and submerging cars and homes across the Russian capital.
The rains caused one of the city's rivers, the Yauza, to overflow near Aqueduct Park in northeastern Moscow.
Muscovites could be seen navigating through thigh-deep water, while ducks from the Yauza swam along pedestrian paths, local media reported.
In the Moscow suburb of Shchyolkovo, two people were reportedly killed by a fallen tree.
The Moscow region has been hit by three "abnormally" rainy days in a row, with some districts in the capital receiving nearly a month's worth of rain, the Phobos weather center said.

Heavy rainfall led to the collapse of a reservoir dam in the Ural Mountains region of Chelyabinsk on Friday night, Russian authorities said, forcing residents of nearby villages to evacuate their homes.
A dam at the Kialimskoye reservoir, measuring around 500 meters long, was unable to hold back rising waters and broke, unleashing a flood torrent toward four villages in the Karabash district of the Chelyabinsk region.
A video shared on social media showed the dam being washed away by a powerful current of water, which poured into the surrounding area. Another video, filmed by someone who sought safety on the roof of a building, showed fast-flowing water engulfing homes, cars and trees.

Following several days of heavy snowfall, Russia has recorded some of the Northern Hemisphere's lowest temperatures of the season so far (outside of Greenland and the Alps—notably Mont Blanc's record-breaking 24.6C/-12.3F).
The harsh Siberian winter is arriving early this year.
Sebyan-Kyuyol reached a low of -23.9C (-11F) on Tuesday, October 8; Susuman saw -22.8C (-9F); Batagay-Alyta posted -20.6 C (-5.1F); Kolymskaya hit -20.4 C (-4.7F), and Taskan-In-Magadan bottomed-out at -20.3 C (-4.5F).

As of mid-October, over 70% of Russia is now blanketed in snow, with fresh accumulations recently covering the Urals and parts of Southern and Eastern Siberia.
Early accumulations of snow have been reported in areas like Yakutia, Magadan, Chukotka, Taimyr, and Yamal, signaling winter's rapid advance across the country.
These early-October snows have been accompanied by significant temperature drops and all. In Eastern Siberia, temperatures have already fallen to -11 to -16C (12.2 to 3.2F), while the Urals and Southern Siberia have seen frosts nearing -10C (14F).
Further to the north’s biting cold reported yesterday, temps have sank even further:
This morning (Oct 17), Verkhoyansk saw -33.2C (-27.8F), the coldest temperature so early in October since 1989, when it reached -33.4C (-28.1F) on the same date, and also the lowest temp of the season in the Northern Hemisphere (excluding Greenland).
Other regions in Russia also tanked below -30C, with Sebyan-Kyuyol at -31.2C (-24.2F) and Batagay-Alyta at -30.1C (-22.2F).

Much of Russia, particularly its central regions, is experiencing a polar outbreak that has brought record-breaking snowfall.
By the morning of Sunday (Nov 24), Tver reported a depth of 27 cm (10.6 inches), which comfortably surpassed the previous November snow record of 21 cm (8.3 inches).
Likewise, the western Moscow Region, including Mozhaisk, Volokolamsk, and Klin, all record snow depths north of 20 cm (7.9 inches)—again setting records.
While in the Smolensk Region, the areas of Yelnya, Vyazma, and Gagarin observed 25 cm (9.8 inches). But it was the Kaluga Region's of Spas-Demensk and Mosalsk that took the top spot, reporting 29 cm (11.4 inches).
Latest Rutgers University Global Snow Lab data show extensive snow cover across Russia, with over 90% of the country covered. Note Mongolia and Canada are also blanketed, with the U.S. up next (see below).

A powerful winter system is unleashing chaos across Siberia and the Russian Far East, delivering record snow, hurricane-force winds, and paralyzing blizzards across multiple regions.
Storm warnings have been in effect for the Taimyr Dolgano-Nenets Municipal Region, the Turukhansk District, and the Evenki Municipal Region. Whiteout conditions and fierce northwest winds topping 80 mph have swept these parts.
The Amur Region is another buried under unprecedented snowfall. From Nov 25 - 27, three times the normal monthly snow has accumulated here, and records are falling. Blagoveshchensk, for example, has busted its benchmark set in 1940. While in Tiksi, blizzard conditions have raged for four consecutive days now, and are expected to persist until Nov 29.

The remote settlement of Saskylah in Yakutia, Russia plunged to -7.7C (18.1F) — one of the coldest June temperatures ever recorded there.
It’s mid-June, a time when even Siberia should be thawing. Yet Saskylah is flirting with full-blown winter, a deep freeze driven by stubborn Arctic air descending south, combined with crystal-clear skies that let the heat bleed out overnight.
Ground-level factors like lingering snow and reflective permafrost only deepened the chill.
Yakutia (at 3,083,523 km2) has a coldest-ever July temperature of -2.1C (28.2F) — this mid-June chill (-7.7C) was exceptional.

City transportation officials urged residents to use public transit, though service was disrupted at several metro stations and on the Aeroexpress train to Sheremetyevo Airport.
The rainstorm followed a heat wave over the weekend and is part of a broader weather pattern affecting central Russia. Southern regions have seen temperatures exceed 40°C (104°F) in recent days.
Forecasters said heavy rain, lightning and strong winds would continue in Moscow through Tuesday night and into the week.

Recently, Sebyan-Kyuyol in Yakutia shivered through -3.2C (26F) — the coldest July temperature ever recorded at the site. Yakutia is known for wild temperature extremes, but July usually brings mild weather, with average lows far above freezing.
And it’s not isolated.

A powerful mass of polar air remains locked over Russia, breaking summer cold records across the Urals and delivering one of the most extreme July cold snaps on record.
In Izhma, in the Ural region, the mercury plunged to -3C (26.6F) — a reading that will likely, once confirmed, represent the coldest peak-summer temperature ever recorded there. It’s freezing. In high summer.
To the north in Vorkuta, thermometers dropped to -0.7C (30.7F) — just 0.3C shy of its all-time July record low. Vorkuta typically endures long, brutal winters, but the region's summers, as short and cool as they are, rarely come anywhere close to freezing.
Elsewhere, Ust-Shugor registered -2.4C (27.7F), which ties its all-time July record low.
This a potent Arctic air intrusion — a cold anomaly the media will neglect to mention its in 'baking' climate reports.
Vegetation, crops, and wildlife in these latitudes rely on brief windows of summer warmth. This cold surge will deal lasting damage. And it isn't over yet—though it does shift a little eastward today, July 23:

Across the Balkans, autumn has been shoved aside by midwinter.
In Skopje, North Macedonia, the high on October 2 barely scraped 7.1C (44.8F)—a staggering 13C (23F) below the seasonal norm, more typical of December.
Today (Oct 3) brings the peak of the outbreak.
From Sarajevo to Pristina, and into the hills around Sofia, snow is expected to reach down to 500–600 meters (1,640–1,970 feet) — virtually unheard of for early October. Indeed, the magnitude of this cold has been labelled once-in-a-lifetime.

On Sunday, Verkhoyansk, Yakutia plunged to -27.2C (-17F), marking its fourth consecutive morning below -25C (-13F).
Such early-season cold has never been recorded in October since observations began in 1885.
And now Monday morning has just extended the stretch to six, with a reading of -25.6C (-14.1F).

Russia closed October under a wave of brutal cold, with multiple stations in Yakutia plunging below -37C (-35F) — the lowest readings of the season so far.
Baimka-Baimra led with -37.9C, followed closely by Oymyakon at -37.1C, Nera at -37C, and Delyankir at -36.5C — all within Siberia’s core cold basin, where winter has now firmly taken hold.
Further east, Anadyr in Chukotka dropped to -27.4C (-17.3F) on October 30 — its second-lowest October temperature since records began way back in 1898 (just 0.8C shy of the all-time monthly record).
The early-season chill underscores the rapid onset of winter across northern Russia, with widespread snow cover deepening not only in Russia (now over 50% covered), but also across Mongolia and parts of China.

On November 3, Konstantinovskaya, Russia plunged to -40.0C (-40.0F) — the nation’s first -40C of the season.
The reading came from Russia’s far northeast, in eastern Yakutia, as Arctic air tightens its grip across much of Siberia. Widespread lows below -30C (-22F) were recorded across the Sakha Republic, with several stations nearing the -35C (-31F) mark.
This year’s first -40C arrives earlier than average, as per Ogimet SYNOP archives, with it typically not seen until mid-November.
Temperatures are expected to drop further in the coming days, with deep cold forecast to expand westward.

Russia has just posted its lowest temperature of the season so far — an exceptional -45C (-49F) in Shelagontsy.
According to Pogoda i Klimat (a long-running Russian meteorological data archive), this reading sets a new daily record for the station, beating all observations since 1940, and ranks among the coldest early-November values ever logged there.
Nearby Siberian locales joined in: -41C (-42F) was registered in Oymyakon, -40.2C (-40F) in Habardino, -40.1C (-40F) in Kerbo, and -40C (-40F) in Delyankir — all signaling that the Arctic is now firmly entrenched across the Sakha Republic.
This year’s plunge comes around two weeks earlier than average, as -45C readings usually aren’t seen until late-November.
With models showing continued blocking to the north and deep snow cover expanding westward, further sub -45C readings are likely in the coming days.

Russia’s Far North is now deep in winter.
On Nov 12, two stations in Yakutia —Saskylakh (-45.2C) and Yubileynaya (-45C) — dropped to their coldest November 12 readings on record. Saskylakh beat its 1972 record (of -44.9C), while Yubileynaya bested a mark that had stood since 1949 (-42.8C).
Across central Yakutia, overnight lows continue to sink to -35C to -40C (-31F to -40F), with clearings dropping even lower. In the northeast and northwest, thermometers are expected to hover between -40C and -45C, with lowland pockets plunging toward -48C (-54F). The region faces increasing northwesterly winds up to 18 m/s, bringing blizzards to parts of Neryungri District.
Heavy snow, a “winter wonderland”—according to reports—is currently unfolding in Sheregesh, Kemerovo Oblast:
Yakutsk remains locked in deep freeze, with daytime highs struggling to -25C (-13F) and nights below -30C (-22F). The pattern signals an early and intense start to winter across Siberia, coinciding with ongoing, ever-accumulating snows.
Snowfall is building to the south too, in northern China. Below is a look at Altay, Xinjiang on the evening of Nov 13:

Russia continues to be hammered by one of its most severe snow events in a century, with the Far East buried.
Another burst of snow slammed the Kamchatka Peninsula on Jan 13, dumping 2 meters (6.6 feet) across large areas of the peninsula, with drifts climbing to second-floor windows in some neighborhoods.
The worst conditions were centered on Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and Vilyuchinsk, where wind gusts of 112 mph combined with the snowfall to produced blizzard conditions, road closures, and small avalanches even within residential areas.
Vehicles were quickly buried as roads became impassable.
This latest storm compounds what has already been an extreme winter. Since mid-November, at least five major systems have hit Kamchatka, with southern parts of the peninsula logging more than 300% of average snowfall by this date.
Farther south, Vladivostok has been locked down by relentless snowfall for days.
Authorities described it as the heaviest snow here in years. Snow-clearing crews are working nonstop, with officials warning it could take up to five days to restore basic road access, assuming the snow relents.
Schools have been closed through the end of the week, extending New Year holidays.

The winter of 2025-26 is shaping up as one of Russia’s most disruptive and snow-laden in generations. As reported yesterday, practically ALL of Russia is covered in snow:
Looking ahead, Siberia’s cold is forecast to spread west over eastern Europe.

The Kamchatka Peninsula has logged its largest snowfall event ever observed, according to Russia’s national weather service.
Official snowfall logs for Kamchatka date back to 1879. Based on that archive, authorities confirm the current event is the most extreme snowfall on record, not just for a single storm, but for cumulative accumulation over a short period.
In several locations, months’ worth of snow has accumulated within days (Jan 9 - 15), producing meter-deep accumulations, burying vehicles and buildings, shutting roads and airports, and forcing emergency roof clearing to prevent collapses.
And not just in Kamchatka, but across Russia.
Locals in Irkutsk —located roughly 3,000 km to the west— describe towering walls of white lining their streets: “We really don’t have anywhere to store the snow anymore.”
And there’s more to come.

Swaths of Siberia have slipped back toward winter.
On May 22, frost warnings stretched across a broad belt of Russia, from Omsk and Novosibirsk to Kemerovo, Altai Krai and Orenburg. Overnight lows were expected to fall to -5C (23F), cold enough to threaten early crops, gardens and spring vegetation.
In Kemerovo Oblast, the cold has been biting for days. Local stations fell to around -4C (24.8F), with daytime temperatures stuck near 4C (39.2F). Snow fell in Kemerovo. Roads in Kuzbass were covered. Visibility deteriorated.
The cold also spread into the mountains and republics farther east.
Tuva faced wet snow, thunderstorms, hail and damaging winds. Buryatia was hit by mountain wet snow and a temperature drop of at least 10C. Around Irkutsk and Lake Baikal, snow remained in the higher terrain, with more frosts expected through to May 25, at least.
Heating systems have been turned back on in Siberian communities, according to local reports.
