And 33 times what it was two years ago. Where is that global warming when we need it?

“The Great Lakes have 9 times the ice coverage of last year at this time,” says reader Marque2. “And 33 times that of two years ago.”

Here are comparison maps of ice concentration on Lake Superior.

The comparisons are similar – or even more pronounced – on the other Great Lakes.

Sea freezes over in Cape Cod and rare snow hits Hawaii as temperatures plunge to -70C in US
Parts of the US have been among the coldest places on Earth during a week-long deep freeze affecting 100 million Americans

An extreme cold snap across the US has seen the ocean freeze on the Atlantic coast and rare snowfall hit Hawaii in the Pacific.

Parts of the US have been among the coldest places on Earth with temperatures plunging and a wind chill making it feel like almost -70C.

Locals in Cape Cod, Massachusetts - where frozen sharks have washed up - were left stunned after the sea turned to ice close to shore.

They were able to walk on giant chunks of ice in the wake of a deadly "bomb cyclone" that brought huge amounts of snow and freezing cold from the Arctic.

Title: Snowfall record shattered in Yankton
Post by: Mark on January 26, 2018, 07:58:22 AM

Almost doubles previous snowfall record.

22 Jan 2018 – The City of Yankton declared a snow emergency after a powerful winter storm brought much of the region to a standstill as heavy snow and strong winds created blizzard conditions.

The snowfall, which measured 14.2 inches, shattered the old record of 7.5 inches set in 1982. Unofficially, it was one of the biggest January snowfalls ever recorded in Yankton; there are two 16-inch records on the books, the most recent being a year ago Wednesday.

The storm also paralyzed other parts of the region.

The South Dakota Department of Transportation announced that I-29 was closed from Tea to Sioux City, and declared Highway 81 between Yankton and Norfolk, Nebraska, to be impassible. Travel was was “difficult to impossible” from Yankton to Windom, Minnesota.

Title: Record snowfall in New York
Post by: Mark on March 05, 2018, 06:57:37 PM
Heavy wet snow sent tree limbs crashing down and left more than 100,000 customers without power across upstate New York.

Buffalo had received more than 8 inches of snow by 7 a.m. Friday, a record for March 2.

Areas south of the city received 20 inches (50 cm) or more.

Meanwhile, about 70 miles east, the Rochester area was closing in on a foot of snow.

Title: New rainfall record set for North Texas
Post by: Mark on March 05, 2018, 07:15:37 PM
A whopping 4.72 inches of rainfall at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport on Wednesday pushed the region's official rainfall total from 6.59 inches to 11.31, according to the National Weather Service office in Fort Worth.

The February record was broken "only over the past seven to 10 days or so," said Matt Stalley, a meteorologist with the weather service in Fort Worth. "The first half of the month was fairly dry.

"We've had a really good batch of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and numerous disturbances that have brought a lot of rainfall," Stalley said.

The rain has cleared out of Tarrant County for now but could return to mess with the weekend. There's a 20 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms beginning Saturday night, which increases to 30 percent on Sunday. Monday brings another 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. High temperatures are forecast to stay between 60 and 70 by the NWS.

Even if there hadn't been a drop of rain Wednesday, last month would still have been the third-wettest February in the 120 years since records have been kept, trailing only 1997 (7.40 inches) and 1945 (6.96 inches).

Normally, North Texas averages 2.66 inches of rain in February, according to the weather service.

Title: Record Snowfall Across Upper Midwest Shatters Previous Records
Post by: Mark on April 05, 2018, 05:59:32 PM
Also bracing for record cold

For example of the shattered record, Wausau, Wisconsin’s new record of 9.3 inches was almost double the previous record of 5.6 inches set in 1923.

Other areas easily surpassed their previous records. Look at this image from Weather Nation:

The 5.3 inches of snow that fell in Sioux Falls, S.D. also set a new record, shattering the old record of 3.3 inches set in 1974.

High snow amounts in other areas included:

Petoskey, MI.           12″
Minneapolis, MN    10.6″
Elk Creek, WI            9.0″
Cheboygan, MI         8.5″
Ledyard, IA               8.0″
St. Cloud, MN           7.7″

Forecasts call for record cold

Forecasts indicate that Tuesday night into Wednesday morning could see record-breaking cold temperatures. Tuesday night’s low temperature is pegged at 12 degrees, and the current cold record, set in 2002, was 15 degrees.

“It does look like we’ll break that record,” Murray said.

Skies look sunny — or at least partly sunny — Wednesday and Thursday, and no precipitation is expected. More snow is possible on Friday, and again on Sunday.

Assuming there will be snow on Sunday, it may be mixed with rain thanks to temperatures that could climb into the upper 30s. Which might mean more of the wet, smushy stuff.

Title: Snowfall records toppled in South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin
Post by: Mark on April 17, 2018, 07:18:41 PM
16 Apr 2018 – In Minnesota, the snowstorm (blizzard) broke three records.

The 14.9 inches (37.8 cm) of snow that fell at Minneapolis airport from Friday through Sunday set a record for the city’s largest April snowstorm ever, and made it the snowiest April on record in the Twin Cities. It also made it the city’s all-time snowiest start to a calendar year, with 70.3 inches (178.6 cm) since Jan. 1.

In South Dakota, Sioux Falls set two snowfall records, first, for a single day in April at 13.7 inches (34.8 cm) Saturday, and second, with a total of 24.9 inches (63.2 cm) it broke the record for the month. Meanwhile, Huron, SD. set a two-day record for April with 15.5 (39.4 cm) of snow, as did Mitchell with its two-day total of  16.2 inches (41.1 cm).

The 23.5 inches (59.7 cm) of snow that fell in Green Bay, Wisconsin, made it the all-time second largest snowstorm in Green Bay history. It also brought total snowfall for the month to 35 inches (89 cm), making it the city’s snowiest April on record.

Have had a look at the US national report for March and Jan-March 2018. The overall "CONUS" picture is not one of coldness.... March mean temperature ranking was 76 (1= coldest, 124=warmest); Jan-March was ranked 87. Globally temperatures are down on the 2016 highs, not surprising given the transition from El Nino to La Nina. The next El Nino could be interesting in an unwelcome way ...

Post by: Mark on April 25, 2018, 07:28:50 PM
https://www.sott.net/article/383786-Seven-Southwest-US-states-suffering-exceptional-drought-conditions

The changing of the seasons from winter to spring has brought an unwelcome worsening of drought across the U.S. Southwest and Southern Plains. The animation below shows drought conditions becoming more intense and widespread between the start of the animation on January 9 and the final frame on April 17.

At the start of the year, only a few small areas of extreme drought existed in the contiguous United States, the largest of them in Oklahoma and South Dakota. As the season advanced, extreme drought conditions expanded from Oklahoma into Texas and Kansas, with detached pockets also appearing in Arizona and New Mexico by mid-February.

By mid-March, drought in the panhandle of Oklahoma had reached "exceptional" status, and severe drought had pushed northward from Arizona and New Mexico into Utah and Colorado. As of mid-April, parts of seven Southwest states had progressed into exceptional drought.

In the last decade, areas of northern Wisconsin have experienced several storms with heavy rains that are only projected to occur once in a lifetime, according to precipitation archives from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

An official analysis of the weekend's storms in northern Wisconsin by NOAA confirms that 100 to 1,000-year rainfall events occurred in some areas of the state.

Duluth National Weather Service Meteorologist Joe Moore said that's based on a comparison of three-day totals and NOAA's Atlas 14 records.

"Not everywhere in Wisconsin saw that kind of severity, but definitely parts of northwest Wisconsin, particularly in Douglas and Bayfield Counties," said Moore.

Title: Huge, Fast-moving Wildfire forces California Evacuations
Post by: JennyLeez on July 04, 2018, 08:02:59 PM
The blaze, which started Saturday near San Francisco, has exploded in size as dry weather sweeps western states.

A vast wildfire in rural northern California has exploded in size and forced evacuations in hot, dry weather that is sweeping through several western states where blazes are threatening thousands of homes.

Firefighters watch as flames climb a hillside in Guinda, California

The fast-moving fire that started over the weekend north-west of Sacramento grew dramatically to about 70 sq miles (180 sq km) by Monday, largely burning out of control in rugged terrain, marked by a few cattle and horse ranches, and sending smoke and ash as far south as San Francisco.

The fire that started Saturday about 100 miles (160 km) north-east of San Francisco spread as strong winds pushed smoke south, dusting cars and homes with a thin layer of gray ash. About 300 people were told to flee their homes, and more than 100 buildings were threatened. No injuries were reported.

The flames were chewing through 1.5 sq miles (four sq km) of rugged terrain an hour, said the California department of forestry and fire protection spokesman, Gabe Lauderbale.

“This fire is absolutely, extremely fast-moving,” he said.

Slightly cooler temperatures were forecast later Monday but gusty winds that could spread the blaze also were expected, Lauderbale said.

The hot, windy conditions fueling the fire and others across the west were expected to persist through the end of July in Utah and parts of California, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon and Washington, US fire officials said. The south-west, which has been struggling with drought, should get enough rain in early July to reduce the risk of major blazes in Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico, the National Interagency Fire Center said Sunday.

In Colorado, more than 2,500 homes were under evacuation orders as firefighters battled more than half a dozen wildfires. Most of the evacuations were tied to a 78-sq-mile (202-sq-km) wildfire in southern Colorado that led to the arrest of a Danish man on arson charges.

Nearly 9 inches of rain that pounded Manhattan, Kan., overnight and into the day Monday caused major flash flooding, forcing more than 300 people to evacuate their homes. Some 750 homes still lack power, the city of Manhattan reports.

"We're saying it is a 500-year event, perhaps a 700-, 800-year event," said Manhattan's Municipal Government Manager Mark Fehr at a 2 p.m. press conference Monday.

Aerial photographs posted by the Riley County Police show buildings flooded nearly to their roofs. Two emergency shelters have been established, one at Cico Park and a second at Bramlage Coliseum.

'"It is estimated that about 300 individuals have been impacted as of now," Fehr said. The Army Corp. of Engineers, he said, reported 8.9 inches of rain had fallen in the area, causing Wildcat Creek to overflow its banks. Three bridges were overcome, two on Kansas 18 and the bridge on Scenic Drive.

Post by: Mark on September 14, 2018, 08:20:15 AM
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) — Time is running short to flee Hurricane Florence, a monster of a storm zeroing in on the Southeastern coast with more than 10 million people in its potentially devastating sights.

Florence’s top sustained wind speeds dropped from a high of 140 mph (225 kph) to 110 mph (175 kph) as its outer rain bands approached the North Carolina coast early Thursday, reducing the storm from Category 4 to Category 2, but forecasters warned that the enormous wind field has been growing larger, raising the risk of the ocean surging on to land.

“Do you want to get hit with a train or do you want to get hit with a cement truck?” said Jeff Byard, an administrator with the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Record-breaking rainfall has an ancient spring near Incarnate Word University flowing again, according to its caretakers.

San Antonio is on pace to break it’s September rainfall record of 15.78 inches set in 1946.
On Sept 4 alone, 6.07 inches fell which smashed the day’s previous record of 1.79 inches set back in 1889.

After three weeks of deluges, the San Antonio River’s most prolific spring is flowing again.

‘The Blue Hole’ was the reason this area was first settled over 300 years ago. Back then the spring was a gusher — a natural fountain bursting with an abundance of life.

In recent years the flow of the water has been put in serious doubt.

But this year’s record rains have brought the spring back to life, and may be a sign of things to come — due to shifting global rainfall patterns linked to the GSM.

Title: Record cold across central United States
Post by: Mark on October 19, 2018, 08:21:52 AM

16 Oct 2018 – “High temperature of 50°F (at midnight) in Dallas-Fort Worth is really sad, says meteorologist Dr Ryan Maue. “It’s also a super record … Coldest daytime high on record for any day up until October 20th.” was the chilliest so early in the season by a full week (besting Oct 22, 1936).

It was the chilliest in Dallas so early in the season by a full week (besting Oct 22, 1936).

“Second day in a row Kansas City has broken the record low,” says Joey Marino. “Currently 28° at KMCI. Old record was 29° set back in 1976!”

“Two records were set today in Oklahoma City,” says Asst professor of meteorology Jason Furtado. “Record low of 35 F (Previous record: 38 F in 2001) – Record low maximum of 50 F (Previous record: 54 F in 1914).”

Not only in Dallas, Oklahoma City and Kansas City, widespread record lows were recorded both Monday and Tuesday across the western half of the country.

As you can see on the above map, the cold extended all the way to the Gulf of Mexico, bringing the coldest day on record, or close to it, to much of the Plains.

“Numerous other records have fallen from the central United States to the Intermountain West and from the Canadian border to Mexico,” writes Ian Livingston for the Washington Post. “Widespread lows in the teens and 20s have been common at low elevations, dipping to the single digits to near zero in the high terrain. A large section of the region has seen temperatures running 12 to 20 degrees below normal over the past week.

The past two days have been as cold as any on record – or the coldest on record – for this time of year from Montana through the Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Colorado, across much of the southern Plains and into Texas.

Post by: Mark on November 16, 2018, 08:38:51 AM
Houston reported its earliest snowfall ever, beating places like New York City and Boston as a cold snap descended over Texas.

George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston set a new record for the first observed snowfall, breaking one set on Nov. 23, 1979, according to a Twitter post from the National Weather Service. Near record-breaking cold has swept into the South, with temperatures in the state 25 degrees Fahrenheit (14 Celsius) or more below average, according to the U.S. Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland.

Title: New York City shatters 112-year-old snowfall record
Post by: Mark on November 18, 2018, 08:27:08 AM
Killer storm dumps six times more snowfall on Central Park than previous record.

16 Nov 2018 – The 6.4 inches (16.3 cm) of snow that fell on New York City (Central Park) yesterday eviscerated the previous record of one inch set on Nov 15, 1906.

To put this in perspective, keep in mind that average snowfall in Central Park for the entire month of December is only 4.8 inches. Also keep in mind that we’re still only halfway through November.

Other notable snowfall amounts:

Newton, PA –       12.3″ (30 cm+)
Worcester, MA –   8.2″ (22 cm +)
Nashua, NH –       6.8″  (15 cm +)
Mt Hope, NH –   18.3″  (45 cm +)
In addition to being responsible for at least 11 deaths and leaving hundreds of thousands without power, the snow caused chaos in several states including New Jersey, where students were forced to stay in school overnight, in Pennsylvania, where motorists were trapped in their cars for more than 12 hours

Title: 2018 will officially go down as D.C.’s wettest calendar year on record.
Post by: Mark on December 19, 2018, 05:31:01 PM
WASHINGTON — 2018 will officially go down as D.C.’s wettest calendar year on record.

The National Weather Service (NWS) announced that Reagan Airport’s total observed rainfall for the year had reached 61.34 inches at exactly 6:26 a.m. on Saturday, shattering D.C.’s old record of 61.33 inch.

The rain, meanwhile, keeps coming. The end of the previous record’s 129-year streak comes during an ongoing, late autumn rainstorm, expected to dump around 2 inches of rain in the capital region before moving out on Sunday.

Flood watches were in effect for the entire WTOP listening area, with a possibility of high standing water in roadways and flooding along small creeks throughout the weekend.

“We’re over 61 inches of rain for this year, and we’re tacking on maybe another inch or two as we head through this weekend,” NBC Washington meteorologist Lauryn Ricketts said. “Rain will continue not only today, but also through the day tomorrow. It could be heavy at times, it could be light at times, but again, we’re gonna have a rainy and soggy weekend.”
