Fire bans in place amid extreme heat.
Updated: 7:36 am, Friday, 13 January 2017
Temperatures up to 47C are forecast in northwest NSW and many parts of the state will swelter with the mercury predicted to rise above 40C on Friday.
The tiny outback town of White Cliffs is likely to be the hottest place in the state at an expected 47C, while Bourke is due for a scorching 46C, Dubbo 43C and western Sydney 42C.
The record for consecutive days above 40C could be broken at Bourke, which in 1892 was set at 22 days.
Meanwhile, it will be much cooler in Sydney city with a forecast maximum of 33C and conditions should ease for the southern half of the state during the weekend, a Bureau of Meteorology forecaster told AAP.
But the heat is set to come back early next week with many areas likely to again experience temperatures in the low to mid 40s.
'It's not over yet,' the BOM forecaster warned.
Meanwhile down south -
A severe weather warning for heavy rainfall and damaging wind is in place for much of South Australia as an intense rain band makes its way across the state.
But the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) said falls would not be as large as originally predicted.
Thirty-four millimetres of rain have been recorded on the Nullabor, 32mm at Ceduna and 24mm at Kangaroo Island since late last night.
The most significant rainfall for Adelaide is expected to come in the next few hours, but at a lower-than-expected maximum of 30mm.
Senior forecaster Vince Rowlands said the expected rainfall at the Mount Lofty Ranges had also been downgraded from the initial 80mm forecast.

Much of New South Wales is endured extremely high temperatures today, although Sydney's hottest weather may be tonight.
Total fire bans are in place across most inland districts of the state today as temperatures soar towards 47 degrees in the west. Fire bans also cover the Hunter and Sydney.
By midday, temperatures had already reached 44.9C at Wilcannia, 44.2C at White Cliffs, 43.3C at Bourke, 41.9C at Broken Hill, 41.6C at Griffith, 41.4C at Condobolin and 34.2C at Richmond.
Humidity is exacerbating the heat today by making it feel 3-4 degrees warmer than the actual temperature in some areas. Penrith's 38 degrees at 1:20pm felt more like 42.

Parts of south-east Queensland have been hit by heavy rainfall and flash flooding after severe thunderstorms, described as "very dangerous" by the Bureau of Meteorology, swept through late on Sunday afternoon.
BOM forecaster Michelle Berry said the storms were patchy, with much of Brisbane's northern suburbs missing out.
But she said it was the city's southern suburbs which copped a drenching.
"Carindale and also down towards Chandler — 107mm at Chandler itself and Carindale picking up about 95 [mm] and much of that fell in one hour."
BOM said there was 80 to 90mm in an hour in Ipswich, west of Brisbane, and Mount Glorious received 67mm in 30 minutes.
Energex said more than 1,400 of its customers lost power in the storm.
Police asked motorists to stay off the roads, with Stanley Road in Carina, Moggill Road in Indooroopilly, and Vulture Street in Woolloongabba all affected by localised flooding.

After a 121-year-old heat record fell on Friday, dangerously hot weather will continue to bake Sydney, Australia, on Saturday.
Friday became the 10th day this summer to record highs exceeding 35 Celsius (95 Fahrenheit) at Sydney's Observatory Hill (the city’s official weather station) as temperatures soared to 37.5 C (99.5 F).
Never before have so many such days been registered in a summer since record-keeping began in 1859. The old record for the most days was nine, which was originally set during the summer of 1895-96, according to data from the Bureau of Meteorology.
The new record could reach 11 days with temperatures set to soar to around 38 C (100 F) again on Saturday.
At the Sydney Airport, a new record was set for the hottest February day with a high of 42.9 C (109.2 F) on Friday. The old record was 42.6 C (108.7 F) originally set on 21 February 1980.
For a city where a high of 26.5 C (80 F) is more common in February, this latest blast of heat will continue to put a strain on residents.

'Monster' Cyclone Debbie intensifies.
Queenslanders are being warned to brace for 'a monster' as Cyclone Debbie barrels ever closer to the state's northern coastline.
Debbie intensified to a Category 4 system at 8pm on Monday, the Bureau of Meteorology said. There is a chance that that it may reach category 5 strength before making landfall between Cape Upstart and Cape Hillsborough on Tuesday morning.
The cyclone is forecast to hit the coast near Bowen at 8am on Tuesday at the same intensity, ahead of high tide at 9.44am.
'This is going to be a monster of a cyclone,' Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk told Ten News.
Forecasters predict wind gusts within Debbie's destructive core could reach up to 275km/h but say the situation is changing rapidly.
HEAVY RAIN of 250mm/24h is possible, with potential for flash flooding.
DANGEROUS STORM TIDE on Tuesday morning for coastal and low-lying areas.

THE eye wall of Cyclone Debbie is beginning to bear down on North Queensland as locals brace for a “harrowing” time.
Residents on Hamilton Island have reported winds “like freight trains” as the cyclone’s most dangerous zone passes through the popular holiday spot.
“It’s massive and so frightening. It’s right on top of us now and it’s stalled with winds in excess of 200km/h,” she said.
“It is so noise, it’s like half a dozen 747 jets coming through. It’s incredibly loud through the windows. Whether the house will stand a Category 5 which they are predicting, I don’t know.”

RESIDENTS in the firing line of Cyclone Debbie have been warned they face an agonising and hellish wait for the worst of the storm fury to pass.
The slow moving category four cyclone will not only linger along the coast but is also expected to hit towns up to 100km inland.
The Bureau of Meteorology predicts Debbie, which is expected to make landfall between Ayr and Midge Point around 1pm Queensland time (2pm AEDT), will be felt for hours before and after the centre passes.
BOM Senior forecaster Adam Blazak told news.com.au the cyclone was slow moving but was picking up speed as it barrelled towards land.
He said Hamilton Island had already been battered by winds in excess of 195km/h and this was only the start.
“It’s going to be a long and exhausting day and a very long wait,” he said.
Mr Blazak warned it could take 18 long and hellish hours for the worst of the cyclone to pass.
“It’s a quite unusual system, it’s really only starting up now,” he said.
“The wind gusts are exception already and with these destructive winds will see power lines down, trees uprooted and flying debris.
‘It’s going to be really exhausting for people living through it and in some cases it won’t be safe to venture outside until at least tomorrow”, for fear of debris flying through the air.
“A category four can range from 225km/h to 280km/h.
“At 145km/h we can expect branches down, as the wind speed doubles so does the damage”, he warned, with the heavily populated area expected to cause a lot of damage.

Ben Domensino, Thursday June 1, 2017 - 09:51 EST
Adelaide is on track to endure a run of cold mornings not seen this early in the season since 1889.
The state capital city's chilly transition into winter comes amid a string of cold and frosty mornings across South Australia this week.
Clear skies, light winds and a cold air mass underneath a strong high pressure system are responsible for the run of below-average minimums.
The coldest place in South Australia this morning was Yunta in the North East Pastoral District, where the mercury dropped to -4.7 degrees shortly after 7am. This was the coldest June morning in five years.
Further south, Renmark was cold enough for severe frost this morning as the temperature reached -3.2 degrees. This was its coldest minimum this early in the season for 11 years.
Adelaide reached a low of 2.9 degrees in the city this morning as frost crept into some of the outer suburbs. This was Adelaide's second consecutive morning below five degrees and this run could be extended to five by Sunday.
If Adelaide drops below five degrees for five consecutive mornings this week as forecast, it will be the city's coldest spell this early in the season for 128 years.
The last time Adelaide recorded five mornings in a row below five degrees was during August 2014.
Minimum temperatures will rise at the start of next week as the stubborn frost-producing high finally gives way to a frontal system.

delaide: record cold start to winter
Ben Domensino, Monday June 5, 2017 - 12:40 EST
Adelaide has ended a record-breaking string of cold mornings by managing to stay above five degrees.
While the city's low of 5.1 degrees this morning was three below average for June, it was Adelaide's first morning above three degrees since the start of winter.
Adelaide's four consecutive mornings below three degrees between Thursday and Sunday last week was the coldest spell since 1982 and the coldest on record this early in the year. This is quite an impressive feat, with data available for the last 130 years.
Sunday also marked the fifth consecutive morning below five degrees, which hasn't happened this early in the year for more than a century.
The unmistakably wintry change of seasons in Adelaide has also been felt across many areas in southern, central and eastern Australia. Multiple states and territories have endured a run of frosty mornings and crisp, clear days.
This fittingly-timed period of chilly weather was caused by a slow-moving high pressure system centred over the nation's southeast in recent days.
Frost will remain widespread each morning this week as high pressure systems remain a dominant feature over southern Australia.
Adelaide is forecast to enjoy a near-average minimum of seven degrees tomorrow morning, before dropping back to a nippy three degrees on Wednesday.

The mercury in the NSW town, close to the Murray River, sank to -5.6C early on Sunday morning — that’s the coldest it’s been for 110 years.
It was even more icy further north as winter records were broken across NSW and Victoria — some towns recorded their coldest morning ever.
It’s so freezing, the NSW Fire and Rescue Service has been forced to warn people not to fire up barbecues indoors.

Brett Dutschke, Saturday August 12, 2017 - 11:03 EST
In more than 100 years of records, 36.5 degrees is the hottest it has been in South Australia in August, and this week will come close.
The far north town of Oodnadatta holds the record for hottest August day in the state, set in 1946, and will have another go on Tuesday.
The outback town, famous for its pink roadhouse, is about to turn a shade of red. It should reach about 34 degrees on Monday and about 36 degrees (14 degrees above average) on Tuesday as dry northwesterly winds draw heat from a baking northwestern Australia.
With help from ample sunshine, the WA Kimberley has been consistently reaching the mid thirties each day for the past week, two-to-three degrees hotter than the early August average.
In Oodnadatta, a sip of shandy or sarsparilla may be in order to quench the thirst. But watch out for blowing dust and flies as dry winds gust to about 50km/h at times.
At sunset, a relieving cooler wind change won't be far away. A southwesterly should arrive 8-9pm and drop the temperature below 20 degrees before midnight and below 15 degrees by sunrise on Wednesday. This cooler wind will hold Wednesday to a maximum near 25 degrees.

Record-October rain in eastern Queensland
Ben Domensino, Tuesday, October 3, 2017 - 12:18 EDT
Parts of eastern Queensland received more than three months worth of rain on Monday during the season's first soaking.
An upper-level low moving across the state's south caused widespread rain and thunderstorms over central and eastern districts yesterday.
The heaviest falls occurred along the coast where moisture-laden onshore winds from the Coral Sea produced hundreds of millimetres of rain in a matter of hours.
Bundaberg Airport's 239mm during the 24 hours to 9am today was its heaviest rain since 2013 and their heaviest October rain on record. The deluge was also 3.5 times Bundaberg's monthly average at this time of year.
The highest rainfall totals for the 24 hours ending 9 am today were 319mm at another rain gauge in Bundaberg and 303mm at Woodgate.
Further south, Noosaville collected 124mm up to 9 am today, its heaviest October rain since 2010.
Falls of 50-80mm also occurred in central Queensland near Springsure and up to 63mm was registered near Roma in the Darling Downs. On average, these areas usually see about 50mm during October.
The upper-level low that caused yesterday's deluge in Queensland is moving towards the southeast today, allowing the heaviest rainfall to move offshore.
Despite lighter falls, showers and thunderstorms will occur over the southeast quarter of Queensland and a large area of northeast NSW today. Some of these storms may be severe.
The latest storm warning is available at Australia Bureau of Meteorology weather warning summary (http://www.weatherzone.com.au/warnings.jsp)

Massive’ damage in some parts of northern NSW. (New South Wales is a state in southeastern Australia.)
Hail the size of golf balls fell at Narrabri, and 10cm of snow was recorded at Perisher.
Stephen Butcher, from Tregeagle, near Lismore, said the damage from Sunday night’s storm was “massive”.
“I fear for some of my stock, I have thousands of dollars worth of yearlings, two-year-old thoroughbreds in the paddocks,” he said.
“I could hear the roof tiles breaking with the force of the wind and the size of the hail. I’ve never seen anything like it.” “I’ve got massive fig trees that are just shredded.”
said it was the most severe hailstorm he had seen in 30 years of growing berries in the area.
