The first week of 2017 looks set to be the coldest ever across the continental U.S.
Despite a mild Christmas in some parts of the U.S., winter will return with a vengeance this weekend as a blizzard batters New England and temperatures are expected to plummet across the continental states.
Temperatures are likely to drop to record lows in the first week of 2017, leaving at least some of all 48 of the contiguous U.S. at 32 degrees or under.
But before then New England will spend Thursday through Friday in the middle of blizzard conditions that will drop as much as two feet of snow on several of its states.

Interstate 80 reopened through the Sierra on Wednesday afternoon after closing for two days amid a powerful storm that dumped several feet of snow on mountain passes.
Caltrans officials announced the stretch of the interstate between the Nevada border and Colfax had reopened around 1 p.m., but drivers were required to use chains and stay under 30 mph.
A blizzard warning will remain in effect through Thursday as up to 10 feet of snow was expected to fall above 7,000 feet and 7 feet were forecast at the Lake Tahoe level at 6,000 feet.

Over the last two weeks, heavy rains pushed water levels at Santa Clara County’s largest reservoir into the danger zone, with officials warning it could overflow.
That happened over the weekend, sending massive amounts of water into the Coyote Creek, which runs through the heart of San Jose.
By Tuesday, the creek was overflowing at numerous locations, inundating neighborhoods, flooding hundreds of homes and forcing the frantic evacuations of more than 14,000 residents, who remained out of their homes Wednesday.

A fast-moving winter storm bringing up to two feet of snow was expected to hit the northeastern United States, forecasters warned on Monday, prompting airlines to cancel thousands of flights and some mayors to order schools to close on Tuesday.
The National Weather Service issued blizzard warnings for parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and Connecticut, with forecasts calling for up to 2 feet (60 cm) of snow by early Wednesday, with temperatures 15 to 30 degrees below normal for this time of year.
Some 50 million people along the Eastern Seaboard were under storm or blizzard warnings and watches.

The worst winter ever in New England was probably not 2015, but 1717, when staggering amounts of snow fell in what became known as the Great Snow of 1717.
great snow of 1717So much snow fell that year, capped off by a series of storms that started in late February, that the Puritans in Boston held no church services for two successive weeks, reported Cotton Mather. The events were so unusual that he and other contemporary diarists made note of how exceptionally harsh it was throughout New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Connecticut.
Though the dates varied, the storms are most commonly cited as having occurred between February 27 and March 9, though others include storms of February 18 to the 24th as being part of the Great Snow of 1717.
Regardless of dates, for generations after it became common in New England to refer to events as having occurred either before or after the great snow. Writers including Henry David Thoreau made reference to its historical significance in their work.
Great Snow of 1717 - Cotton Mather
Cotton Mather
Throughout the region snow totals from the back-to-back storms were recordedatf four, five and six feet, with drifts as high as 25 feet. Entire houses were covered over, identifiable only by a thin curl of smoke coming out of a hole in the snow. In Hampton, N.H., search parties went out after the storms hunting for widows and elderly people at risk of freezing to death. It wasn't uncommon for them to lose their bearings and not be able to find the houses. Sometimes they were found burning their furniture because they couldn't get to the woodshed.
Countless numbers of livestock perished in the storms, and many stories recounted farmers spending weeks digging out cows, sheep, chickens and pigs, often reporting that they had miraculously found animals alive under the snow and restored them to health. A couple of pigs worked their way out of a snowbank 27 days after the storm ended, having survived on some tansy. Hens lasted as long as a week under the snow, turkeys as long as 20 days.
The deer population was reduced tremendously, some estimated 90 percent of it was lost. Some towns made clearings where the animals could seek shelter to avoid the wolves and other predators.
Though life slowed to a crawl, it did not stop. The mails were delayed, but they were delivered by post boys who got around on snowshoe throughout New England, still using them late into March. People maintained tunnels and paths through the snow from house to house.
Joshua Coffin’s history of Newbury, Mass. recounts the charming tale of Abraham Adams who managed to escape through a window of his house and walk three miles on snowshoe to visit Abigail, his new wife since December of 1716. The newlyweds were apparently separated by the storm and she was holed up with her family. He managed to enter their house via a second-story window.
They had their first child, if you’re curious, on Nov. 25, 1717, almost nine months to the day after the great snow.

https://www.click2houston.com/weather/cold-temps-shatter-107-year-old-record-in-houston
HOUSTON - It was 1910 the last time it was this cold at Bush Intercontinental Airport, and 1952 since it was this cold at Hobby Airport.
It was 36 degrees on Sunday morning at IAH, which shattered the previous record low temperature of 39 degrees. At HOU, it was 39 degrees which broke the previous record low of 42 degrees.
The good news is that the wind is not a factor. So, what you see in temperature is what you actually feel.
Expect a warmup to about 70 degrees by Sunday afternoon. That is about 9 degrees warmer than Saturday, but still about 8 degrees colder than the norm.

Second consecutive day of record-breaking cold
11 Nov 17 – The temperature dropped to 23F on Saturday morning, according to the National Weather Service, breaking the old record low for the date of 24F set in 1901.
It also marked the second consecutive day of record-breaking cold for the Boston area.

Erie, Pa. sees record 53 inches of snow in 30 hours (photos)
by Geoff Herbert | gherbert@syracuse.com
Dreaming of a White Christmas turned into a nightmare for some as holiday travel in Pennsylvania has been snarled by a record-breaking winter storm in Erie, Pa.
The National Weather Service says nearly three feet -- 34 inches -- of snow fell on Erie on Christmas Day Monday, the highest single-day total ever recorded. The city's previous record was 20 inches on Nov. 22 in 1956.
Snow continued to fall Tuesday morning, with another 19 inches between midnight and 6 a.m. That brought the snowstorm total to 53 inches in just 30 hours for the snowiest 2-day total ever recorded in the entire state of Pennsylvania.
According to the NWS, Erie's previous biggest snowstorms were 30.2 inches over three days in 2002 and 39.8 inches over seven days the previous winter.
GoErie.com reports the city of Erie declared a snow emergency Tuesday morning and the storm's not even over yet. A lake effect snow warning is in effect until 4 p.m. Wednesday, with up to 16 more inches of snow possible at a rate of up to 3 inches per hour.
According to CBS, Pennsylvania State Police is recommending all drivers stay off the roads in Erie County on Tuesday. The PennDOT has also issued a speed restriction for Interstate 79, between Meadville (Exit 147A) and Interstate 90.

In his 10 years, Vincent Rivera of Corpus Christi, Tex., knew snow only as something experienced by others.
“My mom has been to places like Chicago and Washington, D.C., when it’s snowing, and she would tell me about it and I wish I could be there to see it,” he said in a phone interview on Friday night.
When snow was forecast for parts of Texas late Thursday night, he stayed up until midnight. His wait was in vain. But five hours later, he awoke to two inches at his home and as much as five inches in other parts of his neighborhood.
The snowfall, which Vincent described as a “pretty cool experience,” was the first recorded in Corpus Christi since 2004.

Sharks are washing up on a beach in Massachusetts frozen completely solid amid a record-breaking cold snap in the United States.
The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy said it had found three dead thresher sharks stranded on the shore of the Cape Cod Bay in Brewster, south of Boston, in the last three days.
The first two were "likely stranded due to cold shock" it said. The third was frozen solid.
Thresher sharks are found all over the world and generally stay far away from the shore, in warmer waters.
"These sharks were most likely moving to the south with the warmer water and got caught in the hook of Cape Cod," the group said.
The minimum temperature for the Cape Cod region in December is usually about 1 degrees Celsius, but current forecasts have it reaching as low as -12C.
The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy said all three sharks would be examined once they thawed.
Meanwhile, sea turtles are also feeling the cold.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said it rescued more than a dozen sea turtles off the coast of Galveston Island that were "cold-stunned by freezing air temperatures".
The lethargic sea turtles were found by fisherman and taken to NOAA's Sea Turtle Hospital to recover.
"All 18 turtles were brought in for rehabilitation, where their body temperature was slowly increased prior to placement into water," the group said.
