Mentions work much in the same way as used in twitter. If you wish to draw a members attention to a post or a point in a post you type @ before the Members name e.g. @Jennyleez
It is case sensitive but pretty clever. As in the above example as you type @jen my name and avatar will appear and you can click on it.
Depending on my configuration I will either receive an email with a link to the Post or a PM notification.
To configure your Mentions run your mouse over Profile from the Top Menu.
Select Mentions. That will take you to any Mentions you may have.
Click on Settings and select how you would like to be notified of any Mentions made to you by members. This will activate Mentions for you.
If you do not wish to receive notification of any Mention directed at you. In settings leave all 3 options unchecked.
Click Save when finished.
If you wish to test this once you have completed Settings, post underneath and I will post back using your @Username.

Sorry ....
the beteljuice NOT being a social media person is being a bit thick about this.
Where and how for example would I initiate a 'mention' ?
-
@beteljuice (http://www.localweather.net.nz/smf/index.php?action=profile;u=26)
By doing this you will receive notification of this message.
Its a little like what you do in the Shoutbox.
So whoever you wish to direct a point or post to, you start with @ and then there username.

Hmmm ... I have received no mail nor have any obvious 'board' flag for your mention - but reading the first post I need to set it up !!!!
So there it was 'hiding' in mentions - now have set up to actually tell me about it !
Why not have a default setting of PM ?
-
@beteljuice (http://www.localweather.net.nz/smf/index.php?action=profile;u=26) lets see if this works for you now.
Yes correct you have to tick one of the 3 boxes under your Profile to say how you would like to be notified.

It is set up the same as messaging (PM) giving the user the choice of whether they actually do want notices. Many dont.
I will have a look though and see what choices we have in admin. By memory there is not too many.
