Fewer than 2000 tickets remain for the Crusaders' Christchurch homecoming.

The Crusaders will play South Africa's Cheetahs on Saturday in the city's first Super Rugby match since May 2010.

The match doubles as the debut for the new 17,000-seat Christchurch Stadium, which replaces earthquake-damaged AMI Stadium.

Canterbury Rugby Football Union chief executive Hamish Riach said today there had been ''strong interest'' in covered seating, most of which was sold out.

The uncovered east stand still had limited seats, he said.

''We're really pleased with the response. If people are thinking about going, they want to move pretty quickly,'' Riach said.

Many seats in the south stand had been snapped up by season ticketholders and north stand seats by hospitality and corporate packages.

''Between those two groups, that's a good flying start, and then the public sales have been really strong for the Cheetahs game,'' he said.

Riach would not be drawn on whether a sellout was expected.

''We're just working hard to sell every ticket and we can feel it building. We know there's a lot of support for the Crusaders finally getting back,'' he said.

''We would hope to sell out, but we don't take that for granted. It looks like we're going to have a big, noisy crowd whatever happens from here.''
