Title: Lowest May temp on record for Lithgow, NSW Australia
Post by: Mark on June 10, 2016, 07:03:29 PM
Monday’s minimum of -7.7 degrees freezer-burned away the previous record May low temperatures of -6.1 at the old Lithgow weather station at Birdwood Street and -5.9 at the new Cooerwull site.

Tuesday morning’s -6.1 degrees also would have equalled or beaten the previous May minimum records.

Tuesday’s low had the distinction of being the coldest temperature around NSW for that day.

While May ended with Lithgow residents rugged up and ready to buy toboggans, earlier in the month Lithgow experienced possibly its highest ever minimum for the month and some pretty warm maximum temperatures.

The 13.4 degrees minimum recorded on May 9 was just 0.1 off the unofficial highest minimum temperature of 13.5 recorded at the new Cooerwull site on May 3, 2015.

Coming from an area of quite highs and lows in weather here in Ontario Canada, Australia was known to us to be an exotic and very warm/hot place.  Then 11 years ago, June 6th 2005 we traveled there for our son's wedding in Sydney.  The weather wasn't hot but very nice.  After the wedding we drove to our new daughter-in-law's home town,  Parkes, NSW and going through Lithgow past the Blue Mountains.  When we arrived in Parkes it was quite cold and rainy.  On the way back to Sydney and going through Lithgow it was now getting real cold.  While we didn't see it ourselves we did read the next day that there had been snow falling in that area.  A total different impression than what we had been led to believe from story telling and fairy tales ;)

Now our story telling of NZ is from beautiful seaside tropical beaches to treacherous snow covered maintain peeks.  Don't have another son for getting married and reason for traveling, but will have to put it on my bucket list to visit when I fully retire - if that will ever happen!
