Just two screenshots of two GUI's at work- Windows 7 and Linux Mint 17.1
Desktop wallpaper is courtesy of Windows 10 log in screen, I think.

Haha, it's my everything-computer. Work and play and 24/7 weather station computer. The internet link shortcuts are temporary (until I have worked my way through the content they link to), but the rest are programs I do use from time to time. I've always preferred having access direct from the desktop rather than using the start menu.

I agree Tom, I can not stand a cluttered desk. My taskbar carries my shoutcuts. It is double in side but the icons are small and close together. 24 icons all up.
Some clients PCs come in and the whole screen is covered in icons. I cringe. How they can find anything I have no idea. Not only that each icon has to read in on boot.
Below is my Primary desktop. I too have two monitors. Sure need the 2 for that Data Summary.
My weather station PC is on other side of my workshop and also have 2 monitors. That PC does nothing but display the weather software.

So far I have stuck with WinXP :)

The best one by far for the Mac OS X system is a free one called "Skitch"

Yes I have seen dektops that are something like 75% covered by icons. I would never do that to mine. Just did some tidy-up and removed 9 icons :)

To me the layout of the screen  and start menu and taskbar are the most important elements when I look at the desktop. For decades now, they have ruled the roost and I think the failure of Win 8 as a desktop pc was a result of ignoring what works well in a traditional setting.
Microsoft's efforts to have a one OS to rule them all(Windows 10)- desktop pc/phone/tablet/whatever- may be admirable but it still needs work.
For me Win 7 does it and I find I am always trying to make my other OSes resemble it.
