Boulders have been flung on to a Wellington south coast road in an overnight storm that had winds reaching 110kmh.
MetService is warning of more southerly gales and rain today before the low disappears.
Cook Strait waves were averaging about 5m from peak to trough this morning with the occasional large wave of 10m
The rough weather in Cook Strait meant all Interislander ferries between Wellington and Picton had been cancelled until further notice.
Both the train service and airport are still open with no disruption.
Kelburn had a 100kmh gust at 6am and Wellington airport reached 95kmh at 3am.
In Wairarapa, which was also expected to face the brunt of the low which spun up the east coast of the South Island yesterday, Masterton recorded a 95kmh gust at 3am.

It was offshore swell stuff really - on land it was nothing special. At home we didn't even notice the overnight winds - it was a "whiner" rather than a "screamer" (the bad ones are the latter type). Partly because the wind direction was more SSW than "true" south.
