Title: Britain braces for worst storm in a decade
Post by: Mark on October 28, 2013, 11:59:35 AM
Britain is bracing for its worst storm in a decade, with heavy rain and winds of more than 130km/h set to batter the south of the country.

The Met Office national weather centre warned of falling trees, damage to buildings and disruption to power supplies and transport when the storm hits overnight to Monday.

Between 20 and 40mm of rain is predicted to fall within six to nine hours starting on Sunday night, with a chance of localised flooding.

It will be followed by widespread gusts up to (110km/h across southern England and south Wales on Monday, with winds reaching more than 130km/h an hour in some areas, forecasters say.

76mph is 66 knots
we get gusts of that strength here a couple of times a year, or at least yearly...
The isl of wright though got stronger than that

also the winds only affected the south coast this time...

Agree - when I think of the UK tho, I don't think of winds anywhere near that strong. I have no doubt they get them, especially along the west coast, but not so much in the more heavily populated areas along the south

Scottland, especially outlying islands, certainly get winds this strong often

the south coast/ channel area is prone to very strong winds though...re the big storm of 87 and in the past too...
