A deep low is moving over the lower South Island today. An unsettled strong west to northwest flow over the country, bringing rain to western New Zealand and gale westerlies to the lower North Island, is expected to ease tonight as the low moves away to the east of the South Island.

Heavy rain falling in the ranges of Buller and Westland, with spillover into the Canterbury headwaters, should ease south of Otira around midday and further north this evening. Another 40 to 60mm of rain may accumulate in the ranges Buller. People are advised that rivers and streams will rise rapidly, and slips and localised surface flooding are likely.

In addition, gale westerlies affecting the lower North Island, with severe gale gusting 120 km/h in Hawkes Bay and Wairarapa between Hastings and Featherston (including the Rimutaka summit), should ease tonight. The strongest winds are likely late afternoon and this evening. Winds of this strength are likely to bring down trees and powerlines, may cause damage to insecure structures, and make driving hazardous, especially for motorcycles and high sided vehicles.
