A moist north to northwest flow is expected to spread over New Zealand today (Thursday), with a series of embedded troughs moving across the country during the next few days, bringing bursts of heavy rain to many places.
In the ranges of Westland and also in Fiordland north of Doubtful Sound, rain is expected to develop this afternoon, with periods of heavy rain this evening, then again during Friday and Saturday.
There is also for the possibility of rainfall accumulations approaching warning criteria about the ranges of Nelson and Buller from late Thursday afternoon through to early Friday morning. Rain is also expected to develop in Bay of Plenty this evening.
