Post by: JennyLeez on September 09, 2013, 12:00:49 AM
Discuss the current or recent weather in your region or elsewhere for this week 9th to the 15th of September.
The main feature to watch for this week will be gale northwesterly winds which could affect many regions on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Quite a strange or one off weather pattern at the moment with a large high initially of the Brisbane coast and stretching to north of NZ, is flat and wide and crushed by a stretched deep twin low, one centre just south of Tasmania and the other to the east of NZ, south of the Chathams. Between these two major weather structures is a flat broad westerly airflow - strong and gale force in many places from north of NZ to the Auckland Islands.
With advancing days, the High strengthens and reaches 1032hPa from 1024hPa. The very deep low reaches 940hpa when it concentrates.
By about Thursday, this weather condition has moved eastwards with maintained westerlies over the North Island but strong bitter sou-westerlies over the South Island.
Another Low is following behind at the same lattitude so will force the winds back to westerly again, and the North Island to Norwesters and finer weather, calmer winds. From then on it gets too changeable to forecast really.

A fine day with quite a bit of cloud about but also some nice warming sunny periods, warm but we did not reach our maximum Temperature until Mid Afternoon. Wind pattern today was almost a repeat of yesterday and is the 5th day in a row where the peak of both the maximum Wind Gust (Just 4 km/hr less than yesterdays 58 km/hr) and Wind Speed Mountains for the day has been at or close to Midday, Saturday was a bit of an exception in the repeating wind pattern in that we had another wind mountain that peaked around 18:00. Outdoor Relative Humidity almost got down to Summer levels again today after briefly touching 99% at Midnight and has made it down to around 50% for three days in a row now. Pressure today continued yesterdays late rally but flattened out for several hours either side of Midday but found some more puff around Mid Afternoon and has not looked back since, currently on 1019.5 hPa.
High Temperature 17.1 °C at 15:14 Low Temperature 10.0 °C at 21:47
High Humidity 99 % at 00:00 Low Humidity 53 % at 13:36

Mostly Cloudy today with just a few periods of Sun but they were nice when they came. Despite being mostly cloudy it was warm especially out of the predominantly West South Westerly Wind which was somewhat less gusty than yesterday. The Midday Wind Mountain pattern has been broken. A minor wind mountain up to 20 km/hr just before 6:00am and then another spike to todays Max Gust just after Midday with the main mountain also up to todays Max Gust across 15:00. Outdoor Relative Humidity touched 99% at just minutes before 7:00am and managed to make it down lower than it has for quite a few days, anyone would almost think it was Summer? Pressure continued its upward trend started the day before yesterday, but stalled at 8:46am and then dropped back levelling off at 13:30, flat lining for three hours before recommencing its upward trend but weaker than earlier.
High Temperature 18.0 °C at 14:28 Low Temperature 7.6 °C at 03:07
High Humidity 99 % at 06:56 Low Humidity 45 % at 15:07
Highest Gust 43 km/h at 12:39 Highest Speed (10 minute average) 33 km/h (F5) at 14:32 Wind Run 180.4 km Dominant Direction 249° WSW

There's been a couple of weird wind readings this afternoon from my station which don't add up (like 105.5km) wind gusts. I've been running on a standby generator for periods of the day, but turning it off at times to save fuel as we may be without power for a number of days and I don't have a lot in reserve. I'm wondering whether there might be spikes giving false readings. Any wind strength over 40kmh after 8am can be ignored. The 1.30am record gust was genuine.

Severe gales are tonight slamming parts of eastern and central New Zealand with power cuts, trees down as we head into Thursday the 12th. It will be a sleepless night for many as the gales work their way northward into the North Island.
Many of our Backyard stations are off line as I write this at 12.40am. These are mainly stations on the east coast of both Islands.
The New Zealand Police are warning the public to stay OFF the roads ......... further info from last night here:

Today started with a Light SW Breeze, high cloud cover that receded to the east by 12:30, the Sun came out, and it warmed up. The day also ended with a light SW Breeze, overcast but the Sun went to bed and it cooled off a bit. The Breeze has become much more erratic this evening varying mainly from North to the current 1 - 4 km/hr SSE bringing much heavier cloud formations and some rain for the last hour or so of the day. After a relatively flat wind Gust and speed day yesterday the Midday Wind Mountain is back today topping out at 32 km/hr at 11:40 and just fractionally below that twice more before 15:00 but then dropping back to the largely below 10 Km/hr each side of the Mountain. Outdoor relative Humidity stuck on 99% until around 3:00 but then got down under 50% only to back up to 96% by Midnight. Pressure has generally declined all day today at much the same rate as yesterday but the decline has been in a series of steps with longer static periods between the drops, tonight the decline has accelerated somewhat and is currently down to 1007.2 hPa.
