HEAVY RAIN AND DAMAGING NORTHWEST WINDS OVER THE SOUTH ISLAND AND LOWER NORTH ISLAND TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY.
A west to northwest flow covering the country on Monday is forecast to strengthen significantly on Tuesday ahead of an active front which should reach the lower South Island Tuesday night. This front is expected move slowly northwards to central New Zealand during Wednesday, then over the North Island on Thursday.
There is a high confidence that this event will bring significant heavy falls to the west of the South Island from Fiordland to Nelson, including all of the Southern Alps, with spillover into the headwaters of the Otago and Canterbury lakes and rivers during Tuesday and Wednesday. Over the North Island, there is a moderate confidence of heavy rain for Taranaki, Waitomo, the central plateau and the Tararua Range from Wednesday to Thursday.
In addition, severe northwest gales are likely ahead of the front for central and eastern parts of both islands. The strongest winds are likely to be about Wairarapa, Wellington, Marlborough and inland Canterbury during Tuesday and Wednesday, with a high risk of severe northwest gales. There is moderate confidence of severe northwest gales about Otago, Southland and the Canterbury Plains on Tuesday, and about the Hawkes Bay on Wednesday. There is a low confidence of severe northwest gales about Gisborne on Thursday.
Temperatures are likely to be fairly mild about eastern parts of the South Island at the beginning of the week, especially on Tuesday, however, cooler temperatures are expected about eastern and southern parts of the South Island on Thursday.
